PHREAKFQ.TXT The alt.phreaking FAQ 1.41 (1999) PHK: FAQ:
<br></b><font size=1>
Note: Whirlwind Software disagrees editorially with several points
in this FAQ. First, "Public CN/As" are NOT true CN/As, they are
just talking reverse directories. A true CN/A will deliver CN/A
data for any number in its purview, including unlisted, telco
internal, payphone and other listings. A real CN/A is also usually
manned by a real operator, not a machine. "Name that Number"
numbers are always automated voice response systems that only
give out names for listed numbers, and usually don't give the
address. Second, BOCOTs do not need to interface with the
ACTS system. Due to regulations that require ILECs to offer
the same services (including ACTS) to COCOT operators that they
have for their own payphones, ACTS (and therefore red boxing)
is being phased out very quickly. Many BOCOTs are actually old
"Centurion" style phones that have been retrofitted with a
board that gives the phone its own billing capability - such
retrofit kits are commercially available from COCOT manufacturers
such as Protel and Elcotel. Most BOCOTs are on POTS lines that
are restricted to incoming calls only but Millenniums can also
be connected to digital trunks (result: bank of 8 phones needs only
1 piece of copper). Third, we disagree with the whole idea of a
phreaking "kit". In phreaking or any other kind of suspicious
caper, one should never carry anything more than that which is
absolutely required to complete the task at hand. One should
instead focus on escape routes and the like. In most other
respects this FAQ has good information and should be the starting
point of anyone who is new to the art and science of phreaking.

ADAD.JPG Exchange Scanning is LEGAL as long as it's done during SDO: AUP:
business hours and is random, not sequential. BC Tel says
so on page 23 of its 1998 phone book! And other GTE-owned
telcos including GTE itself have the identical policy. This
scan has the proof! (1998)
ADAD2000.JPG SDO: AUP: As you can see from this scan, Telus (formerly BC Tel) has not
changed their policy on random dialing! (2000)
