  13. What is a fuchsia box?

  16.      Do you own two lines? Do you feel like spending $30+ for a two line phone
  17.  when you know the only difference between a two and a one line phone is a few
  18.  wires? If you answered yes to the former and no to the latter, the fuchsia
  19.  box is for YOU. If you have two separate phone lines (not home "wats" lines),
  20.  you can now have the power to decide which line to use, put a caller on
  21.  either line on hold, and connect two callers together (3-way).

  23. What do I need to build a fuchsia box?
  24. --------------------------------------

  26.      You can build the fuchsia box for about $2.98 assuming you have a few
  27.  odds and ends lying around the house.

  29. Materials:
  30.  
  31. 4 DPDT Switches
  32. 4 Alligator clips (or 2 'male' and 2 'female' modular adaptors )-(2 conductor)
  33. 2 470 Ohm resistors
  34. 1 Spliced modular plug (2 conductor)
  35. 1 Empty butter dish with lid (or other suitable container)
  36. Soldering gun, solder, and electric tape

  39. Prepping the phone lines
  40. ------------------------

  42.      Open up the wall jack on each line. You will notice four (4) wires in
  43.  each, the traditional defaults are red, green, black, and yellow. Despite
  44.  what anyone may have told you, you will NOT need to use the black or yellow
  45.  wires from the wall to build your switch (unless you decide to have
  46.  illuminated switches on you fuchsia box, i.e unless you're a pompous, trendy
  47.  ass). As neatly as you see fit, hook up the two-conductor-cable to the red
  48.  and green wires, and run the cable out of the jack, and replace the jack. Do
  49.  this for both phone lines. Now permanently fasten a red aligator clip to the
  50.  red wire, and any other color clip to the green wire. You might want to tape
  51.  the alligator clips to the cable in such a fashion so that they will not
  52.  come in contact with each other. Should they come in contact with each other,
  53.  you will have static out the ass, which you do not need. If you really want
  54.  your wall connections to look nice, you can rig up a 'female modular in'
  55.  jack instead of the exposed alligator clips. I use the alligator clips
  56.  myself. If you really don't want to open up your wall jack, use a spliced two
  57.  conductor modular plug running into the jack (NOTE: these are second/third
  58.  spliced modular plugs in ADDITION to the one listed in the materials list),
  59.  but make sure you know which wire is red and which is green. Now that you
  60.  have prepped both lines, you're ready to build the box itself.

  62. Constructing the actual box
  63. ---------------------------

  65.      I've always found text-schematics confusing as hell so I will do this in
  66.  a slightly different style. Each number represents a terminal on one of the
  67.  DPDT switches.

  83.      Things indicated in *'s are the resistors, and anything with a -- is an
  84.  cable in/output. The "ph" in/output is to the spliced piece of modular cord
  85.  (which plugs directly into your phone itself. The "1G" "1R" and "2G" "2R" go
  86.  to separate cables and stand for line 1 green, line 2 red, etc.

  88.      Now you are ready to make all the connections. First solder the resistors
  89.  in place, then the in/output cables, then all of the necessary wiring.

  106. Making it look nice
  107. -------------------

  109.      Take a butter dish and poke 3 holes in it with a pencil. Run the phone
  110.  wire, and the each of the 2-conductor cables through a hole. With a knife,
  111.  cut a rectangular window in the lid of the dish to mount the switches on.
  112.  Stuff all the wires in the container part of butter dish and fasten the
  113.  switches on with screws. I suggest you label each of the switches so you
  114.  don't forget which one is which. Close the lid and you are done with the
  115.  construction.

  117. Setting the fuchsia box up for use
  118. ----------------------------------

  120.      This part is EASY. Simply take the each of the conductor cables in hand
  121.  (each one should have a spliced red and green wire). Clip the two red
  122.  alligator clips to the two red wires (one per line). Same applies with the
  123.  green wires. (Or if you're Joe Phone Stud, just plug in your modular plugs).

  126. How to operate the fuchsia box
  127. ------------------------------

  129.      The LINE switch is for selecting which line you want to talk on. If you
  130.  want to talk on both lines, turn the CONFERENCE on. If you want to put line
  131.  A on hold, turn the LINE A HOLD switch to ON. The same applies to line B. To
  132.  hang up one line, turn its hold switch to OFF, then select the LINE switch
  133.  to the line you do NOT want to hang up on i.e., the line you want to TALK
  134.  on. To hang up both lines, turn both HOLD switches to OFF and hang up the
  135.  phone. Unless you have another phone hooked up to either of the lines, your
  136.  phone will not ring unless the LINE switch is selected to the line that is
  137.  ringing.
