  8.         Have you ever wanted a lineman's handset?  Surely every phreak
  9. has at least once considered the phun that he could have with one.
  10. After searching unlocked phone company trucks for one for months, we
  11. had an idea.  We could build one.  We did, and named it the "Beige Box,"
  12. simply because that is the color of ours.  In the following file we
  13. will give complete instructions for the construction and use of a
  14. Beige Box.

  16. (>Construction
  17.  
  18.         The construction is very simple.  First, you must understand
  19. the concept of the device.  In a modular jack, there are four wires.
  20. These are red, green, yellow, and black.  For a single line telephone,
  21. however, only two matter: the red (ring) and green (tip).  The yellow
  22. and black are not necessary for this project.  A lineman's handset
  23. only has two clips on it: the ring and the tip.  
  24.  
  25.         You will need a phone (we reccommend a touch-tone) with a 
  26. modular plug, a modular jack, and two large alligator clips 
  27. (preferably red and green, respectively).  Take the modular jack and
  28. look at the bottom of its casing.  There should be a grey jack with
  29. four wires (red, green, yellow, and black) leading out of it.  To the
  30. end of the red wire attach a red alligator clip.  To the end of the  
  31. green wire attach a green alligator clip.  The yellow and black wires
  32. can be removed, although I would only set them aside so that you can 
  33. use the modular jack in future projects.  Now insert your telephone's
  34. modular plug into the modular jack.  That's it.

  36.         This particular model is nice because it can be easily made,
  37. is inexpensive, uses common parts that are readily available, is 
  38. small, is lightweight, and does not require the destruction of a 
  39. phone.

  41. (>Uses
  42.  
  43.         There are many uses for the Beige Box.  However, before you
  44. can use it, you must know how to attach it to its output device.  This
  45. device can be any of several Bell switching apparatus that include 
  46. terminal sets (i.e., remote switching centers, bridging heads, cans,
  47. etc.).  To open most Bell Telephone switching apparatus, you must
  48. have a 7/16 inch hex driver.  This piece of equipment can be picked 
  49. up at your local hardware store.  With your 7/16 hex driver, turn the
  50. security bolt(s) approximately 1/8 of an inch counter-clockwise and
  51. open.  If your output device is locked, then you must have some 
  52. knowledge of destroying and/or picking locks.  However, we have never
  53. encountered a locked output device.  Once you have opened your output 
  54. device, you should see a mass of wires connected to terminals.  On 
  55. most of your output devices, the terminals should be labeled "T" (Tip 
  56. -- if not labeled, it is usually on the left) and "R" (Ring -- if not 
  57. labeled, it is usually on the right).  Remember: Ring - red -  right.  
  58. The "Three R's" -- a simple way to remember which is which.  
  59.  
  60.         Now you must attach the red alligator clip (ring) to the 
  61. "R" (ring) terminal.  Attach the green alliagtor clip (tip) to the 
  62. "T" (tip) terminal.  NOTE: If instead of a dial tone you hear nothing,
  63. re-adjust the alligator clips so that they are not touching each other
  64. or other terminals.  Also make sure that they are firmly attached.  
  65. By this time you should hear a dial tone.  Dial ANI and find out the 
  66. number that you are using (you wouldn't want to use your own).

  68.         Here are some practical applications:
  69.                 o  Eavesdropping
  70.                 o  Long distance, static-free phone calls to phriends
  71.                 o  Dialing direct to Alliance Conferencing (also static-
  72.                    free) 
  73.                 o  Phucking people over 
  74.                 o  Bothering the operator at little risk to yourself
  75.                 o  Blue Boxing with a greatly reduced chance of getting 
  76.                    caught     
  77.                 o  Anything at all that you want, since you are an 
  78.                    extension on that line

  81.    <>Eavesdropping:
  82.  
  83.         To be most effective, first attach the Beige Box and then your 
  84. phone.  This eliminates static caused by connecting the box, therefore
  85. reducing the potential suspicion of your victim.  When eavesdropping,
  86. it is always best to be neither seen nor heard.  If you hear someone
  87. dialing out, do not panic; but rather hang up, wait, and pick up the
  88. receiver again.  The person will either have hung up or tried to 
  89. complete their call again.  If the latter is true, then listen in, and 
  90. perhaps you will find information worthy of blackmail!  If you would 
  91. like to know who you are listening to, after dialing ANI, pull a CN/A 
  92. on the number.

  95.      <>Dialing Long Distance:

  97.         This section is self-explanatory, but don't forget to dial a 
  98. "1" before the NPA.

  101.       <>Dialing Direct to Alliance Conferencing:
  102.  
  103.         Simply dial 0-700-456-1000 and you will get instructions from
  104. there.  I prefer this method over PBXs, since PBXs often have poor
  105. reception and are more difficult to come by.

  108.        <>Phucking People Over:
  109.  
  110.         This is a very large topic for discussion.  Just by using the
  111. other functions described, you can create a large phone bill for the
  112. person (they will not have to pay it, but it is a hassle for them).
  113. In addition, since you are an extension of the person's line, leave
  114. your phone off hook, and they will not be able to make or recieve 
  115. calls.  This can be extremely nasty because no one would suspect the 
  116. cause of the problem.

  119.          <>Bothering the Operator:

  121.         This is also self-explanatory and can provide hours of
  122. entertainment.  Simply ask or say things to her that are offensive and 
  123. you would not like traced to your line.  This also corresponds with the 
  124. previous described section, Phucking People Over.  After all, guess 
  125. who's line it gets traced to? He he he...

  128.            <>Blue Boxing:

  131. especially nice feature if you live in an ESS-equipped prefix, since
  132. the calls are, once again, not traced to your line.

  134. (>Potential Risks 
  135.  
  136.         Overuse of the Beige Box may cause suspicions within the Gestapo, 
  137. and result in legal problems.  Therefore, I would recommend that you:
  138.  
  139.         o  Use more than one output device
  140.         o  Choose a secluded spot to do your Beige Boxing
  141.         o  Keep a low profile (i.e., do not post under your real name
  142.            on a public BBS concerning your accomplishments)
  143.         o  In order to make sure that the enemy has not been inside your
  144.            ouput device, I reccomend that you place a piece of 
  145.            transparent tape over the opening of your output device. 
  146.            Therefore, if it is opened in your absence, the tape will be
  147.            displaced and you will be aware of the fact that someone has
  148.            been intruding upon your territory.
