  4. Ballot burning robs a student of her title but brings down a
  5. principal

  7.     Unmarried and five months pregnant, sporting a punk look of
  8. dyed red hair, metal bracelets and black fingernails, April
  9. Schuldt did not fit the conventional image of a high school
  10. homecoming queen. Nonetheless, she won the student election at
  11. Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and thus seemed
  12. to have every right to the title. But school officials didn't
  13. see it that way; they denied the 17-year-old her crown and named
  14. the runner-up, pert and clean-cut Elizabeth Weld, as winner. Last
  15. week Eau Claire District superintendent Lee Hansen exposed a
  16. plot by principal Charles Zielin and three assistant principals
  17. to burn the original ballots and cover up their scam. Hansen
  18. announced disciplinary actions against the four administrators
  19. and a teacher who came forward. "In trying to protect the
  20. traditional image of Memorial High School," said Hansen, "these
  21. individuals trampled over . . . the democratic process."

  23.      Schuldt approached school authorities after a student
  24. tipped her off that she had won. Hansen's subsequent
  25. investigation ultimately determined that she had received 100
  26. votes, against fewer than 70 cast for runner-up Weld. As a
  27. result, principal Zielin resigned. One assistant principal was
  28. placed on unpaid leave, and two others received letters of
  29. reprimand. A teacher who counted the ballots was suspended
  30. without pay for 10 days and removed as a department chair and
  31. adviser. With homecoming come and gone, Schuldt never got to
  32. wear her crown. But she has been invited to appear on eight
  33. television programs and is talking to the Donahue show.
