  6.     Andrei Chikatilo, the Russian serial sex killer, was
  7. sentenced to death by shooting in the city of Rostov-on-Don,
  8. convicted of the brutal murders of 52 women and children during a
  9. 12-year rampage through southern Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
  10. The prosecution presented chilling evidence of how the quiet,
  11. bespectacled former schoolteacher smashed his victims' eardrums,
  12. gouged out their eyes and then feasted on their sexual organs.
  13. As the sentence was read out, the courtroom erupted in turmoil,
  14. with one mother yelling, "Give him to us! Let us have him!"

  19.     Shin Kanemaru, 78, was the Mr. Big of Japanese politics, the
  20. man whose backstage maneuvering made several Prime Ministers,
  21. including the current one, Kiichi Miyazawa. Kanemaru thought he
  22. could slide through scandal with a public apology at a press
  23. conference and a small fine for accepting a $4 million illegal
  24. campaign contribution. But the Japanese public, stirred by the
  25. arrogance of the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party power
  26. brokers, was furious that Kanemaru got off so lightly. Protests
  27. within his party, in business circles and in the press finally
  28. forced Kanemaru to resign his seat in the Diet and as chief of
  29. his faction, throwing the ruling party into disarray. Said he:
  30. "It was Shin Kanemaru who was wrong. There are no other bad
  31. guys."
