To all you hip and hard-rockin', head-bangin',
hair-danglin', high-tootin', hog-howlin', hyper-active
bedroom-musicians out there!
Here's a CDROM with nearly all the music from the 1998
music competition in Tekno Magazine!
I say "nearly" because I couldn't fit all the music on the
CD - so I had to do some "ecomomizing" with the disk-space.
If you'd sent in modules (XM, S3M, IT, MOD, etc.), you are
pretty safe to have got both your modules included, because
modules don't take that much space. So in most cases, we
included both modules, even if we didn't like them very
much. There were some exceptions, where people had sent in
*very big* modules - we only included these
disk-space-eaters if we really liked them a lot.
If you sent in CD, MP3 or tape, then we have coded your
music to MP3 and put it on this CD. For those who sent in
two songs on CD, tape or MP3, we have in most cases only
included the one that we liked best. Except, if we
liked both songs very much, then we included both of them.
Sometimes we also shortened the songs before we coded them
to MP3. We hope you won't be too upset by this - remember,
we did it because we needed the disk-space so that
*everybody* could get some of their music on this CD.
Then again, some entries were simply **SO INCREDIBLY BAD**
that we chose to include them just for fun. :-)
All in all, this CD contains music from *all* 220
participants!
Note that the number in front of each directory name
("001backs" and so on) is *not* a score; this is simply the
order in which the entries were listened to by the jury,
i.e. a totally random order in which they came out of the
box when we went through them.
For the best scores etc., look in the Tekno magazine. The
entries were judged by me, Bj°rn Lynne, together with other
people from Tekno and Roland.
The songs that were sent in as modules (MOD, OctaMED, XM,
IT, etc.) are simply stored in the directories as modules.
For MOD and XM, play with FastTracker 2.08. For IT, use
MikIT or ImpulseTracker. If the song needs to be played
with a special player like ModPlug or OctaMEDPlayer or
whatever, look for it in the "Players" directory. Note
that the WinAmp MP3 player can play modules, but it doesn't
support all the effects and stuff, so modules most likely
will *not* sound correct when played with WinAmp. You
should
always play modules with the real program that the module
was made with.
All the entries that were sent on normal cassettes were
sampled through a Korg 168RC SoundLink digital mixer with
an optical digital link to a Frontier Design Wavecenter
card in my PC. I then used SoundForge 4.0 for noise/hiss
reduction, volume normalizing and some light
level-compression, and then I coded them to MP3 (128
kbit/s).
The entries that were sent on CD were read digitally from
the CD and just coded to MP3 (128 kbit/s).
The entries that were sent on DAT tapes were digitally
sampled through an optical link from a Fostex D5 DAT deck
to the Frontier Design Wavecenter card; and then it was
coded to MP3 (128 kbit/s).
The songs that were sent in as General MIDI files or MIDI
files with custom-made SoundFonts, we have quite simply
just put all the files in the directory. Note that to play
the songs that have SoundFonts (*.sf2), you *must* have an
SB Live, AWE32 or AWE64 with sufficient onboard RAM in
order
to play these songs - and you *must* install the correct
SoundFont before you play them. If you don't know what a
SoundFont is, don't even try to play these songs, it will
just be a mess.
If I have made some mistakes, like placed the wrong song in
the wrong directory or something like that, I'm very sorry.
There was a *LOT* of songs to go through, and disks, tapes,
cassettes and CDs were literally scattered around
wall-to-wall in my room. I tried my best to keep it tidy
and get everything correct.
Sound quality: I tried to make the songs sound as good as
possible, using some of the best digital sound processing
tools available to balance levels, clean up hiss and noise,
etc. But on some occasions, the recording was just too poor
to get a good result. So if you hear a lot of hiss and
generally poor sound quality, you can rest assured that
what you are hearing sounds a lot better than the source
that we got. Some people also didn't seem to read, or care
about, the contest rules. We said "only chrome or metal
tapes" in the rules, but still some people sent in *really
crap* old re-used and re-re-re-used normal-position tapes.
Their recordings sounded *terrible*, and even if the song
had been very very good, you wouldn't have had a chance of
winning, simply because of the sound quality. I mean, come
on - some guy sent in his songs on an old tape, and I could
hear the old recording of Simply Red coming through
underneath! Surely he wasn't expecting any prize for that
kind of delivery.
Anyway...
Some people also sent in floppy-disks (again, re-used and
re-re-re-used ones), and some of them had read-errors. When
that happened, I didn't just throw them away without trying
to salvage them. I know that people put a lot of time and
effort into creating this music, and I thought I owed it to
them at least to try and salvage whatever I could, with
"disk-scan" and things like that. Sometimes this was partly
successful, i.e. I was able to salvage most of it - so you
might hear, for example, an MP3 song with some "drop-outs"
or an XM module in which a few instruments are missing.
This probably means that the disk had read-errors, but I
was able to salvage enough of it to make the song playable.
And sometimes I couldn't salvage it at all, after about
half-an-hour of trying to get the disk to work (using 3
different PC's), I gave up.
Finally... a special mention must go to the idiot who had
ripped sections from my own old song "12th Warrior", which
I personally composed back in 1991 or 1992 or whatever. I
mean, what is the matter with people? The competition-rules
clearly said that the song had to be your own original
composition. So this guy takes a song that someone else has
composed, copies the whole middle-section and all the
instruments, changes the drums, signs a paper saying "I
promise that this is my own composition" - and then he
sends the song in for a competition... where the main judge
is the guy who wrote the original song!!!!!! What!! Anyway,
I won't mention his name, although I really wanted to tell
everybody who he is, I'll be nice to him and not put his
name here.
Okay, I guess that's it from me. I hope you'll enjoy this
CD, because I put a lot of hard work into putting it all
together. Now start listening, and have a good time!
- Bj°rn Lynne, main-judge and CD-arranger - Tekno
