Introduction
------------
HTML Imager produces web pages showing all GIF and/or
JPG pictures from the directory you select. Each
picture is shown together with its file name
(alphabetical order) and size. You can also select
different background colors or patterns to test the
appearance of each image under the chosen conditions.
HTML Imager makes it easy to catalogue large
collections of web design pictures or to produce on-
line photo albums. It can also be used to view
pictures stored in the cache produced by browsers such
as Netscape or MS Internet Explorer.
Key Features
------------
* No need to understand HTML to use this program.
* Creates HTML document based on images (GIF and/or
JPG) in selected directory.
* Options let you define a background color or pattern
to use in the HTML document.
* Click the View button, and you will see the HTML
document in your web browser.
* Option to change the base URL (local by default) to
that of your web server. This makes it easy to
publish the resulting document on the web.
Installation
------------
There is no special procedure to follow. Just place
the program and its associated files in the Windows
directory or in a dedicated directory of your choice.
- Windows 3.1 / NT 3.5 users:
If you want to add HTML Imager to one of your Program
Manager groups, the easiest way to do it is with File
Manager. Just select the file HTML-IMG.EXE and drag it
from File Manager to the group where you would like
its icon to appear. You can also run the program by
double-clicking on it from File Manager.
- Windows 95 / NT 4 users:
The easiest way to set the HTML Imager icon on your
desktop is to use Explorer. Just select the file HTML-
IMG.EXE and drag it from Explorer to an unoccupied
space on your desktop. You can also add a shortcut to
it in your Start menu by choosing Settings / Taskbar.
Uninstalling
------------
If you have dedicated a folder for the program, just
delete that folder and all its files (except files you
may have saved there and want to keep!).
Otherwise, just delete HTML-IMG.EXE, HTML-IMG.INI,
BKCOLORS.TXT, and this README.TXT file. All these
files are located in the same directory as HTML
Imager.
If you have executed HTML Imager from a CD-Rom and
saved option settings, you will find the HTML-IMG.INI
file in the Windows directory.
There is no need to delete items from Windows' system
registry or INI files as the program does not store
any information in them.
How to Use HTML Imager
----------------------
Almost every button and input field in the program
offers hint information. Whenever you place the mouse
cursor over a dialog box element, its hint text is
displayed in the programs status bar (at the bottom of
the main program window).
The first field in the program window lets you specify
which type of files you would like to include in the
web page. When you run HTML Imager for the first time,
the default choice is GIF and JPG files. Of course,
you can also specify any other graphic file type that
is compatible with your browser or refine the
selection of files with other wildcard criteria.
In the next step, you must select the directory that
contains the files you want to view. The list box is
just below the first field. You can change drive by
selecting it from the drive combo box.
Use the field called "HTML Output Name" to specify the
name to use for the resulting HTML file. If you leave
this field blank, HTML Imager will create a temporary
file that will be automatically deleted once you exit
the program. If you don't specify a path name, the
file will be created in the chosen directory
containing the images.
If you want to use a background pattern for your web
page, just enter the name in the "Background Pattern"
field. Use the button on the right side of the field
to browse your disk for the appropriate file. Use the
next field if your prefer to have a background color
rather than a pattern. Please note that you cannot
have both a background pattern and a color.
Then, once you are satisfied with your settings, click
on the "Filter" button. The web page will be created
if the program finds files that match your search
criteria (the count is displayed in the grey "Found"
field). BTW, this step usually takes just a fraction
of a second.
Finally, click on the "View" button to display your
web page in your default browser. If nothing happens,
your browser is probably not Netscape or MS Internet
Explorer, or it is an old version, or it has not been
installed correctly. In this case, you will have to
click on the "Options" button and specify the path and
file name of your browser in the "Web Browser Name"
field. Note, however, that you should leave this field
blank if the feature works correctly.
Viewing Pictures Contained In The Cache
---------------------------------------
Follow the procedure described above and select your
browser's cache directory as the location to search
for the images.
The following indicates the default directory used by
some of the browsers...
Netscape Communicator:
.....................
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\???\Cache
(NB: replace "???" with the appropriate name)
Netscape Navigator:
..................
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Cache
MS Internet Explorer:
....................
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Cache1
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Cache2
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Cache3
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Cache4
The Next Major Version
----------------------
Great features are planned for the next version which
will hopefully be released before the end of 1997. The
HTML pages produced will be fully customizable and
several ready-made output formats will be included in
the package. Because of the work this will involve and
to support my family, I plan to make the upcoming
version available as Shareware for a modest $5 USD. It
will probably be sold through ideaMarket at...

Updates and Other Programs
--------------------------
You can find updates of HTML Imager and other great
Freeware/Shareware programs by visiting the
following web site...
http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/geologie/fookes/
This site is also the home of Super NoteTab, an award-
winning Freeware text editor. It includes the popular
"Editor Clipbook" tool which makes inserting HTML tags
and other text items a breeze. Super NoteTab is a
PC Magazine Shareware Awards 1997 finalist and is much
appreciated by webmasters around the World. Try it
out!

I encourage you to freely copy and distribute this

package is subject to the following restrictions:
HTML Imager must be distributed as a complete package
including the following 4 files:
1. README.TXT - this file
2. FILE_ID.DIZ - standard ID file
3. HTML-IMG.EXE - the program
4. BKCOLORS.TXT - text file with color names and
codes
If any of these files are missing, then the package is not complete and distribution is forbidden.
+ The package - including all related program files

way and must be distributed as a complete package,
without exception.

but you must not represent in any way that you are

result in immediate and automatic termination of
this distribution license.

If you really like this program, why not contact the
editors of your favorite computer magazine or
newspaper, or web sites that review software, and tell
them about it! That's a great way to make this
software better known.
Note: this program was written with Delphi and uses
components from a Shareware VCL package called the
"Super Labeled Input Controls". The package, which I
developed, is available for downloading from my web
site at the following URL:

Version History
===============
New in Version 1.2a
-------------------
* HTML files produced by the program are no longer
deleted on closing.
* Hidden directories are now also displayed in the
list. This makes it easier to look into the cache
produced by MS Internet Explorer.
* Items added to the combo boxes and the last used
directory are now remembered between sessions.
* Instructions added to this Readme file.
New in Version 1.2
------------------
* Can be executed from a CD-Rom or a write-protected
disk.
New in Version 1.1
------------------
* Can use registry information to communicate with
your browser (through DDE). The advantage of this
method is that HTML Imager can detect if the browser
is already open. This avoids the problem of opening
multiple instances each time you press the View
button. To enable the registry feature, you must
leave the "Web Browser Name" field empty (in the
Options dialog box). If your browser is not
compatible with this method, you will have to fill
in the "Web Browser Name" field with a fully
qualified browser name (path and program file name).
* If you leave the "HTML Output Name" field blank, the
program will create a temporary file.
