NOTE: Virtual Trainer will run with 640x480 screen resolution, though some important features will not fit into the program window. We recommend that you change your computer screen resolution to 800x600.
1. Insert the Virtual Trainer CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the Auto Run menu appears, click Install and follow the on screen instructions. If Auto Run is disabled or the menu does not appear, select Run... from the Windows Start menu (usually in the lower left corner of the screen) and type D:\Go in the Open box (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK to run the install program.
2. The program will scan your hard disk to see which components you need to install and will ask you if you want to install them if they are not already installed. Therefore it may not be necessary for you to install all of the components.
3. If you do not already have an appropriate browser installed to view the Virtual Trainer, you will be given the option to install Internet Explorer v5.0. Click Yes to install IE5 and follow the on screen instructions; otherwise, click No to bypass this part of the install.
4. If you needed to install IE5, your PC will need to be restarted. Once it has restarted, you can eject and then reinsert the CD. At that time, the Auto Run menu will appear again. Click Install to continue installation. If the menu does not appear, follow previous instructions as detailed in step 1 above.
5. If necessary you will be asked to install Microsoft Java Virtual Machine if it has not already been installed. Click Yes to install and follow the on screen instructions; clicking No will bypass this component. After this installs, you will be asked if you want to restart your computer. This is not necessary at this stage, so click No. If you select No, please remember to restart your computer before running the Virtual Trainer program. You will again need to eject and then reinsert the CD, and the Auto Run menu will again appear. Click Install to continue installation and follow the on screen instructions. If the menu does not appear, follow previous instructions as detailed in step 1 above.
6. If necessary you will be asked to install Real Player 7 if it has not already been installed. Click Yes to install and follow the on screen instructions; clicking No will bypass this component. Real Player 7 requires an e-mail address to be entered. If you do not have one, a dummy address (such as a@a.a) can be entered.
7. You will be asked, if required, to install Macromedia Shockwave Player. Click Yes to install and follow the on screen instructions; clicking No will bypass this component. Note: This request may appear during the Real Player install. Please complete that before continuing with the Virtual Trainer install.
8. The remaining components of the Virtual Trainer will then be installed. Please follow the on screen instructions.
9. Before running the program, please restart your computer.
To run the program after installation:
Select the Windows Start menu (usually in the lower left corner of the screen) and then select Programs > Sybex > Sybex e-trainer, and then click the Sybex e-trainer icon to launch the program.

To install the program on Linux/Solaris (for Java 2 Certification Virtual Trainer only):
1. Insert the Virtual Trainer CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD mounts automatically and the autorun feature is working properly then an Xterm window will open and the installer script will launch. If the CD doesn't mount, you must right-click the CD icon on the desktop and select 'Mount' or execute the 'mount' command from terminal. If the XTerm window doesn't appear, you can launch installation by running 'install' file from the CD. You can also run any terminal emulation program, and change your current directory to where your CD is mounted (for example: 'cd /mnt/cdrom' and then launch the installation script: './install.sh')
2. The License Agreement text will be displayed on the screen. Read agreement carefully, press Enter to list it down. To proceed with installation you must agree with it by typing 'y' or 'yes' and Enter when asked to. Answering 'n' or 'no' will terminate the installation.
3. You will be asked whether you want to search for Java Runtime Environment on your machine. If you know the location of the Java Runtime Environment program, you can answer 'no' and then enter the program name including the full path. Otherwise, answer 'yes'. The Install script will search for Java Runtime Environment. If Java Runtime Environment is not found the installation will terminate. You must install Java Runtime Environment and re-run the installation script.
4. You will be asked whether you want to search for Netscape Communicator on your machine. If you know the location of your Netscape Communicator program, you can answer 'no' and then enter the program name including full path. Otherwise, answer 'yes'. The install script will search for Netscape Communicator. If Netscape Communicator is not found the installation will terminate. You must install Netscape Communicator and re-run the installation script.
5. Installation will create the directory 'Sybex' in your home directory and copy the Sybex files to it. During this process you will see several messages reporting successful copying of files and course info. If the copy fails see Troubleshooting to solve the problem.
To run the program after installation:
In console mode type:
cd
cd Sybex
./runsybex.sh
X-Windows graphical file manager:
Open 'Sybex' folder in your home directory and run 'runsybex' file.

Flash 5.0 Troubleshooting
If the Java Trainer does not play the Flash animations, please do the following:
1. Copy these 2 files from the Flash5 install directory to the Netscape Plugin directory (libflashplayer.so & shockwaveflash.class) These files can be found in the directory that the Flash program was extracted to.
2. Re-Start Netscape and verify that the Flash plugin is installed by typing "About:Plugins" in the location bar.
RealPlayer Troubleshooting
If the Audio does not work, please do the following:
1. After installing Realplayer manually, copy the "RPNP.SO" file located in the RealPlayer directory file to the Netscape Plugin Directory.
2. Adding MIME type:
From Netscape select Preferences > Applications > New,
browse to the RealPlayer Directory, and then select the Realplayer executable.
Add the RM Extension in the Extensions box.
3. Re-Start Netscape and verify that the Realplayer plugin is installed by typing "About:Plugins" in the location bar.
Other Unix Troubleshooting
Check your home directory permissions and disk space before creating new files. Sybex requires approximately 7 Mb of free space to install and run correctly.
If the launch script doesn't run, check the files 'jrepath' and 'netslnch' and modify them so that the first string contains proper Java Runtime Environment and Netscape program names.

Brief instructions on using your Virtual Trainer CD:
Note: All of the screens have instructions at the top to tell you what you can do at all times.
1. Click inside the Splash screen to go to the Home screen of the title.
2. If this is the first course you have installed, your course will be visible and you can select Go to begin studying.
3. If this is not the first Virtual Trainer course you have installed, you must add this course to your Home Page list. Select the Add/Remove Courses button at the bottom of the screen.
4. On the Course Selection screen, the list on the right shows courses you have installed and are available for use. To add your new course, highlight it in the Courses Installed list on the left and select the Add button. The course will be added to the list on the right.
5. If you want to remove any courses from your Home Page list, highlight it in the Courses to Study list and select the Remove button. If all courses you require are correct, click OK.
6. The Virtual Trainer Home Page will appear. Click Go beside the course you wish to start.
7. On the first use of each course, you will be taken through a short narrated introduction and the Study Plan Wizard will set up your personal study plan. It is advisable to follow this sequence.
8. Once your study has begun, use the Contents list at the left to navigate to all parts of the course.

Troubleshooting and Other Recommendations
TCP/IP protocol:
TCP/IP is the underlying communication protocol for the Internet. Your Virtual Trainer CD uses this protocol and cannot function properly on a system without TCP/IP support. Virtual Trainer Setup checks for the presence of TCP/IP and displays a warning message if it is not present.
If you have an Internet Service Provider to allow you to send e-mail and browse the Internet, then TCP/IP should be set up already.
The installation requires Windows' set-up CD-ROM.
a) TCP/IP set-up in Windows 95/98
1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and choose Network.
2. Click the Add button. This will bring up the Select Network Component Type dialog box. Choose Protocol from the list and click Add...
3. In the new dialog box, select Network Protocol. Choose Microsoft and TCP/IP. Click OK.
4. An updated Network dialog box will appear. From the Primary Network Logon drop-down menu, choose Windows Logon and click OK.
5. Restart your computer, if required.
b) TCP/IP set-up in Windows NT 4.0 (in case network is not installed).
1. Start the Network applet from Control Panel.
2. If the question "Windows Networking is not installed. Do you want to install now? "appears, click No.
3. Choose the Protocols bookmark; click the Add... button.
4. Choose TCP/IP Protocol and click Ok.
5. Choose No for the question "Do you wish to use DHCP? "
6. Indicate the path to files with Windows NT distribution; click the Continue button.
7. When all the files have been copied, click Close.
8. When the "Noncritical Error" appears, click Ignore.
9. When the Restart Computer suggestion appears, click No.
10. Start the Services applet from Control Panel.
11. Choose TCP/IP Netbios Helper service from the list.
12. Click the Startup... button.
13. Choose Manual Startup Type.
14. Click OK.
15. Click Close.
16. Start the Devices applet from Control Panel.
17. Choose WINS Client (TCP/IP) service from the list.
18. Click the Startup... button.
19. Choose Manual Startup type.
20. Click OK.
21. Click Close.
22. Restart your computer.
c) TCP/IP set-up in Windows NT 4.0 when network is available.
1. Start the Network applet from Control Panel.
2. Choose Protocols bookmark; click the Add....
3. Choose TCP/IP Protocol and click OK.
4. When the question "Do you wish to use DHCP?" appears, click Yes.
5. Indicate the path to files with Windows NT distribution, click Continue.
6. Choose the Bindings bookmark. In the combo box, choose All Protocols.
7. Open the TCP/IP Protocol item.
8. One by one, select all the adapters in the list below TCP/IP Protocol and click the Disable button for each.
9. Click Close.
10. When the Restart Computer suggestion appears, click Yes.
If you use a proxy server for Internet connections, some proxy settings for your browser must be changed. If you use Internet Explorer, the proxy settings will be changed automatically after the program is started.
If you use Netscape Navigator, you need to adjust settings manually:
1. Select Edit > Preferences...
2. Expand Advanced > Proxy from the Category list, and then click the View button to see the manual proxy configuration;
3. Type "localhost" into the Exceptions field of the Manual Proxy Configuration dialog box.
Some pages may cause an error message if the security settings of Internet browser are set to HIGH. It is recommended to set the security level to MEDIUM while running the program. In Internet Explorer 5:
1. Choose the Security tab in Tools/Internet Options.
2. Select Trusted sites as a Web content zone.
3. Click Sites...
4. Uncheck "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone."
5. Type "localhost" into the 'Add this Web site to the zone' field and click the Add button.
6. Click OK.
7. Set Security level for this Zone slider to Low.
If both Internet Explore v5.0 and Netscape Navigator v4.7 or higher versions are installed on your system, it is possible to switch the program to use the browser of your choice. Follow these instructions to choose your preferred browser:
1. The Virtual Trainer program will need to be running. Edugen server will be minimized on your task bar (usually at the bottom of the screen). Click the Sybex e-trainer icon and choose Select.
2. Choose your preferred browser and click OK.
3. Close out of the Virtual Trainer and re-enter the program to select the new browser.
4. In order for your new browser to display the program correctly, it may be necessary to install the following components again: MS Java machine, Shockwave Player. These programs can be found on the root of your CD.
Important: Please read this license agreement carefully. This agreement between you, the end user and Sybex Inc. is a legal document. If you do not agree to the terms of this license agreement, return the package, accompanying materials and the CD-ROM disk(s) with proof of payment, to the authorized dealer from whom you obtained it, for a full refund of the price you paid. Using the CD-ROM constitutes your acceptance of this license agreement.
1. GRANT OF LICENSE. In consideration of the purchase price paid by you, Sybex, Inc. (''SYBEX'') grants to you, as Licensee (''Licensee''), a single-user, non-exclusive, nontransferable, perpetual license to use this copy of its Software Program and related documentation (together the ''Software'') subject to the provisions of this agreement. 8. MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS. This agreement will be governed by and constructed in accordance with the substantive laws of California, and not by the 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, as amended. This is the entire agreement between us relating to the
