  3. This directory contains the list of largest known primes as several
  4. text files.   The primes are listed one prime per line, so the list
  5. starts (as of April 1994) as follows:

  17. So the largest known prime is two to the 859433rd power minus 
  18. one, it has 258,716 digits, was discovered by Slowinski and Gage
  19. in 1994 and is a Mersenne (but we do not know which because the
  20. whole region below it has not been checked yet).
  21.    The letters after the rank indicate the most recently added 
  22. primes.  See the last pages of the list for information about 
  23. these and other notations.
