  34. II. USING THE COMPANION WITH THE STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA
  35.      ------------------------------
  36.  
  37.       All of the video clips in the Companion can be
  38.       accessed while you are using the 1999 version of the 
  39.       Star Trek Encyclopedia CD-ROM. 
  40.       When you are browsing in the Episodes index
  41.       portion of the Encyclopedia, a VIDEO button will appear,
  42.       inviting you to swap CDs to view the clip for that Episode.
  43.  
  44.       NOTE: It is not necessary to "install" the Episode
  45.       Guide if you only want to see the episode video clips 
  46.       in the Encyclopedia. However, the episode synopses in
  47.       the Companion are more detailed than the episode
  48.       entries in the Encyclopedia; and the video clips
  49.       in the Companion may be enlarged, while only one
  50.       video size is available in the Encyclopedia.
  51.       Scripts are only available here in the Companion.

  53. III. INSTALLING THE DEEP SPACE NINE(TM) COMPANION
  54.      ------------------------------

  56.      Installation for Macintosh(TM) Users:
  57.  
  58.    1. Insert the CDROM into your Mac.
  59.  
  60.    2. Double-click on the disk icon, "DS9 Companion" which 
  61.        appears on your desktop to open the CD's window.
  62.  
  63.    3. Double-click the "DS9 Companion Installer" icon
  64.        and follow the instructions which appear.
  65.  
  66.    4. If you do not already have Quicktime 3, proceed with the
  67.        Quicktime installation which follows.
  68.  
  69.  
  70.   Macintosh - Starting the Program______________
  71.     Double-click the "DS9 Companion" icon in the "DS9 Companion 
  72. Folder" folder.
  73.  
  74.    
  75.         (If you would like to locate the Player in a 
  76.         more convenient location, you can make an Alias for it.
  77.         How to Make an Alias:  Select the Player icon by
  78.         clicking on it only once. Type command-M. 
  79.         That creates a new icon you can drag anywhere.)

  83.      Installation for Windows(TM) Users:
  84.  
  85.      1. Insert the "DS9 Companion" CD into your CDROM drive.
  86.   
  87.      2. From the START menu, select "Run..." 
  88.      If your CD-ROM drive is letter D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and 
  89.      click "OK". This will begin the installation routine. 
  90.      Follow the onscreen instructions. 
  91.  
  92.      You only need to install QuickTime once, so you may skip  
  93.      this option when you are installing the DS9 Companion as  
  94.      well. The version of QuickTime for Windows on the 
  95.      CD is 4.0. If you have an even later version, then
  96.      you may skip the Quicktime option entirely.

  99. IV. ADJUSTING YOUR SYSTEM (Mac and Windows)
  100.      ------------------------------
  101.      You may pre-set your monitor to 
  102.      thousands of colors (16-bit) or millions of colors (24-bit), but
  103.      the program is optimized for16-bit (thousands). 
  104.  
  105.      The fixed image size of Companion is 640x480, 
  106.      although the photo windows can be 
  107.      dragged anywhere.
  108.  
  109.  
  110. V. TROUBLESHOOTING
  111.      ------------------------------
  112.      Having other applications open while the Companion 
  113.      is running can cause poor performance. We highly recommend
  114.      quitting any other program, turning off networking, and
  115.      disabling any unnecessary system extensions.
  116.  
  117.  
  118.      WINDOWS USERS: VIDEO DRIVER SETTINGS
  119.      Some problems, such as your computer locking-up upon 
  120.      startup of the Companion, can be traced to the 
  121.      settings of your display driver. In some cases changing 
  122.      the video resolution may help. Consult your hardware 
  123.      supplier's documentation for details if you need 
  124.      assistance with these settings.
  125.  
  126.      Also for Windows users: Please turn off wallpaper and
  127.      disable any kind of custom shell program before running 
  128.      the Companion. Be advised that inadequate DOS memory 
  129.      is frequently the cause of poor performance or missing 
  130.      graphics or sound.

  146. Video drivers and system settings(Win95/98)_________

  148. Information about your system's video drivers can often assist 
  149. our Technical Support staff in diagnosing problems that are 
  150. encountered when running the program.

  152. To get information about your system's video drivers:
  153. 1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  154. 2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  155. 3. Double-click on Display adapters.
  156.  
  157. Device Manager also displays settings for hardware devices that 
  158. are not fully supported by Windows or are using device drivers 
  159. that need to be updated. 
  160.  
  161. Contact the system vendor or manufacturer if any subkeys, such 
  162. as those under 'Display adapters' or 'Sound, video and game 
  163. controllers' are displayed with a red X or yellow exclamation 
  164. mark.(Click the plus [+] sign to see the subkey.)
