  109.         applications, only to find that you get lost searching for that one
  110.         application you need?  Or have you ever found yourself wanting to
  111.         quickly start an application from within the application you are
  112.         using?  Well, New Generation Software Ltd. has the solution for you!
  113.         WinEZ provides one of the easiest ways to switch between and start
  114.         applications under Windows.
  115.  
  116.         Once WinEZ is installed and running, it places two new icons on the
  117.         title bar of the active application.  The left icon or "Fast Path
  118.         Icon" allows you to quickly start any application in the Windows'
  119.         Program Manager, or be configured to jump directly to the Program
  120.         Manager (or any add-in Windows' shell you define).  The right icon
  121.         or "Task Switch Icon" provides you with a list of all active
  122.         applications.  Similar to the Windows' Task List, WinEZ goes one
  123.         step better and provides task switching without having to use the
  124.         CTRL-ESC or click on the background.

  126.         WinEZ also provides an enhanced Run facility that offers you an
  127.         easy way to navigate through directories and start applications.
  128.         It remembers your last 5 programs executed and the last directory

  166.         meet the needs of our users.  Version 3 incorporates many of the

  171.         1. Norton Support!  The "Power Menu" will now support both Program
  172.            Manger groups (.GRP files) and Norton Desktop groups (.QAG
  173.            files).

  177.            (a) Display a pull down "Power Menu" consisting of your Program
  178.                Manager (or Norton Desktop) groups.  Each group then further
  179.                expands into the applications under it.

  220.         WinEZ attaches 2 icons to the title bar, a Task Switch icon and
  221.         Fast Path icon.  These icons provide a user with one of the fastest
  222.         ways to switch between and start applications under Windows.

  225.         The "Task Switch Icon" (right icon):
  226.  
  227.            - Quickly switch to ANY active application
  228.  
  229.              There is no need to hunt down that one particular window or
  230.              CTRL-ESC to the Task Manager.  From the current application,
  231.              WinEZ's provides a pull down menu of all active applications.
  232.  
  233.            - Start a new application from WinEZ's Run dialog.
  234.  
  235.              WinEZ's enhanced Run facility allows a user to start new
  236.              applications (DOS or Windows) without having to start the
  237.              Windows' File Manager.  This dialog allows a user to select a
  238.              file (program or batch file) to be executed in a manner
  239.              similar to an open file dialog.  Filters are available to
  240.              display only certain types of file extensions (EXE, COM, BAT,
  241.              PIF) for easy pickings.  You may even enter the name of the
  242.              program directly.

  244.              Best of all, WinEZ's Run facility remembers the last 5
  245.              programs executed.  Select the drop down the list box
  246.              (ComboBox) and choose a program from the list presented.

  248.         The "Fast Path Icon" (left icon):
  249.  
  250.         - Allows a user to start another application without ever leaving
  251.           the current application they are using.  It may be configured 2
  252.           ways:
  253.  
  254.           1. WinEZ's "Power Menu"
  255.  
  256.              With WinEZ's Power Menu, you can start any application that
  257.              you've defined in the groups of the Program Manager (or
  258.              Norton's Desktop for Windows).  The Power Menu is a drop down
  259.              menu which displays a list of all the group items of the
  260.              Program Manager.  Each group item has a submenu that contains
  261.              all of the applications in that group.  So instead of leaving
  262.              your current application to activate the Program Manager, just
  263.              bring up the Power Menu and "viola!", your group applications
  264.              are just a click away.

  276.              Windows shell.

  278.              WinEZ's Fast Path Icon may also be configured to allow a user
  279.              to jump directly to any active application.  By default, WinEZ
  280.              will jump directly to the Program Manager, however it may be
  281.              configured to activate any add-in Windows shell.  (See
  282.              "Setting WinEZ's Options").

  285.              jump directly to the Program Manager (or any add-in shell

  332.         INSTALLING AND GETTING STARTED

  335.         WinEZ is easy to install.  First, you will need to unzip the
  336.         WINEZ.ZIP file into a subdirectory (i.e.  C:\WINDOWS).  You will
  337.         need an unzipping utility, like PKUNZIP, to do this.
  338.  
  339.         Once unzipped, you have two choices to get WinEZ up and running.
  340.  
  341.         1. To allow WinEZ to run automatically every time you start
  342.            Windows, you will need to modify the WIN.INI file found in the
  343.            Windows subdirectory.  By editing the line containing the LOAD
  344.            keyword, append the program name WINEZ.EXE.
  345.  
  346.            For example:  LOAD=C:\WINDOWS\WINEZ.EXE
  347.  
  348.            The next time you start Windows, WinEZ will be started for you
  349.            automatically.
  350.  
  351.         2. If you wish to start WinEZ manually, it would be best to install
  352.            WinEZ into a group menu of the Program Manager.  Choose 'New'
  353.            off the 'File' Menu of the Program Manager (Refer to the
  354.            Windows' documentation on how to install programs within a
  355.            Group of the Program Manager).

  393.         evaluation period of thirty days.  If you like what you see and
  394.         feel that it will be useful, you are encouraged to register with
  395.         us.  The base registration fee is $29.95.

  397.         NOTE:  It is a FREE upgrade for registered users of previous
  398.                versions.  You will not be required to re-register.  The
  399.                registration number from the previous versions will work with

  448.         USING WINEZ
  449.         -----------
  450.  
  451.         WHAT YOU SEE...
  452.  
  453.         Once WinEZ is up and running, you will notice two new icons that
  454.         have attached themselves next to the system menu icon on the title
  455.         bar of the active window.  With WinEZ running, most windows that
  456.         become the active application will contain these icons.
  457.  
  458.         The Fast Path Icon (left icon) may be configured to bring up the
  459.         Power Menu, or switch directly to the Program Manager (or any
  460.         add-in shell).  The Power Menu presents the user with a pull down
  461.         menu of all Program Manager groups.  Each group then further
  462.         expands into a submenu of the applications under it.  By default,
  463.         the Fast Path Icon displays the Power Menu.
  464.  
  465.         The right icon represents the Task Switch Icon which presents the
  466.         user with a menu of all the active applications currently running.
  467.         This provides a user with a quick and easy way to jump directly to
  468.         another active application without having to hunt for it.

  471.         USING THE FAST PATH ICON
  472.         ------------------------
  473.  
  474.         As mentioned earlier, the Fast Path Icon is configured for the
  475.         Power Menu by default.  This icon can be used to quickly start
  476.         applications since it provides a list of all Program Manager groups
  477.         and their applications.  To select an item, press and hold the
  478.         mouse button 1 over the icon until the menu appears.  Drag the
  479.         pointer over the group item in the menu, a submenu will appear,
  480.         displaying the applications within that group.  Drag the mouse
  481.         pointer over the application item then release it.  The application
  482.         will be executed.  If the Fast Path Icon is configured to jump to
  483.         an active application (i.e.  Program Manager), then just click on
  484.         it with the mouse and immediately the application defined will be
  485.         activated (i.e.  the Program Manager in this case).  To change the
  486.         Fast Path application, select the Options...  item from within the
  487.         Active Applications Icon.  Next, specify the name of any
  488.         application that is active.  This icon should be used only for
  489.         applications that are running.  If the application is not running,
  490.         clicking on this icon will sound a beep.  See "Setting WinEZ's
  491.         Options" for more details on configuring the Fast Path Icon.

  505.         USING THE TASK SWITCH ICON
  506.         --------------------------

  508.         As stated previously, the Task Switch icon allows a user to quickly
  509.         switch between applications.  To switch to another active
  510.         application, position the mouse pointer over the Task Switch Icon.
  511.         Click and hold mouse button 1. A pull down menu of the active
  512.         applications will be displayed.  Drag the mouse pointer over the
  513.         application that you would like to activate, and release the
  514.         button.  The application selected will now be active.
  515.  
  516.         The Task Switch Icon also presents the user with the other features
  517.         of WinEZ.  Along with the active applications, other items in the
  518.         menu are:
  519.  
  520.              End Task   This item further expands into a submenu of active
  521.                         tasks.  It provides the user with a fast and easy
  522.                         way to end other active applications.  Select an
  523.                         item from the list and WinEZ will end the program.
  524.  
  525.              Run...      This item is the enhanced Run facility that brings
  526.                          up a dialog box allowing you to enter an
  527.                          application to execute or select an application
  528.                          from a list box.
  529.  
  530.              Options...  This item displays a dialog box that allows you to
  531.                          configure WinEZ.  This includes the action
  532.                          performed by the Fast Path Icon and the behavior
  533.                          of the windows when switching between applications
  534.                          (See "Setting WinEZ's Options" section for more
  535.                          details).

  537.              About...    This item brings up WinEZ's About Box dialog.
  538.  
  539.              Exit        This item will end WinEZ and remove it from
  540.                          memory.
  541.  
  542.                          Note:  This Exit selection item will be
  543.                          unavailable (grayed out) on non standard windows
  544.                          (i.e.  dialog boxes).

  565.         When selected from the Task Switch Icon menu ("Run..."), a dialog
  566.         box will appear that will allow a user to start applications not
  567.         defined by a Program Manager Group.
  568.  
  569.         Included in this dialog is a listbox that contains files found in
  570.         the current directory.  This dialog is similar to an Open File
  571.         dialog found in many Windows applications.  A user may change
  572.         directories or drives by selecting the appropriate items in the
  573.         directories listbox.
  574.  
  575.         A filter is available to allow certain file types to be included in
  576.         the listbox.  Current filters include:  EXE, COM, PIF, BAT, and ALL
  577.         files.  These can be used to quickly locate the file that needs to
  578.         be executed.  An additional feature of the Run dialog is its
  579.         ability to keep the last 5 commands executed.

  619.         SETTING WINEZ'S OPTIONS

  622.         WinEZ may be configured by selecting the Options...  item from the
  623.         menu under the Task Switch Icon.  This is where the switching
  624.         behavior can be set and the Fast Path Icon actions can be
  625.         configured.

  627.         Switching Behavior:
  628.  
  629.              When using WinEZ to switch between applications, WinEZ will
  630.              attempt to return the application back to the state it was
  631.              found (if all switching was done via WinEZ).  WinEZ may also
  632.              be configured to always minimize applications when switching
  633.              to other applications.  Choose the switching behavior by
  634.              selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  635.              preferred option.

  639.                WinEZ will attempt to return the application back to the
  640.                state it was found (if all switching was done via WinEZ)
  641.  
  642.              - Always Minimize on Switch
  643.  
  644.                WinEZ will always minimize the application before switching
  645.                to another.

  647.                Note:  WinEZ will only minimize windows that support being
  648.                       minimized.

  676.         Fast Path Icon Action:
  677.  
  678.              The Fast Path Icon can be configured to perform one of two
  679.              functions.  The icon may be configured for WinEZ's Power Menu,
  680.              or to switch a user directly to the Program Manager (or any
  681.              specified active application).  These two options are
  682.              available for your selection.  Choose the Fast Path function
  683.              by selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  684.              preferred option.
  685.  
  686.              - Power Menu
  687.  
  688.                If this option is chosen, then the Power Menu will be
  689.                displayed when you click on the Fast Path Icon (See "Using
  690.                the Fast Path Icon" on how to use the Power Menu).
  691.  
  692.                Selecting "Always Rebuild on Startup" will cause WinEZ
  693.                to rebuild the Power Menu when it is inovke.  If this option
  694.                is not set, a user may have to select "Rebuild Power Menu"
  695.                to get the most current groups listed in the Power Menu
  696.                pull down.
  697.  
  698.              - Title of Window
  699.  
  700.                If this option is chosen, then the application specified in
  701.                the entry field will be activated when the Fast Path Icon is
  702.                pressed.  To specify the application you wish to switch to,
  703.                enter the text found in the title bar of that application.
  704.  
  705.                This is ALSO the name of the Window that the RIGHT mouse
  706.                button will invoke when in Power Menu mode.
  707.  
  708.         WinEZ Icon Position
  709.  
  710.              The WinEZ icons may be positioned anywhere on the title bar.
  711.  
  712.              o Left - will left justify the WinEZ icons.
  713.              o Right - will right justify the WinEZ icons.
  714.              o Number of pels from left - will place the WinEZ icons the
  715.                specified amount of pels from the left side of the title bar.
  716.                NOTE:  Use this option to adjust WinEZ's icons if there is
  717.                       an icon conflict, or if WinEZ looks out of place
  718.                       (i.e. sometimes in Super VGA mode, WinEZ is off by a
  719.                        pel).

  734.         USING WINEZ WITH NORTON DESKTOP
  735.         -------------------------------
  736.  
  737.         WinEZ will automatically detect if you have the Norton Desktop
  738.         loaded as your shell when using Windows.  WinEZ will search the
  739.         "Shell=" line in the SYSTEM.INI file for the character string
  740.         "NDW.EXE"
  741.  
  742.              Shell=C:\NORTON\NDW.EXE
  743.  
  744.         All Norton Groups and Sub-groups will be listed on the WinEZ Power
  745.         Menu.  Sub-groups are not nested.
  746.  
  747.         NOTE:  All group and subgroup file names MUST end in the .QAG
  748.                extension.  This is done automatically by Norton if
  749.                when creating a group no extension (.XXX) is specified.
  750.  
  751.         If you have a Group named "Norton Desktop" (which Norton will
  752.         create on installation) we recommend you rename it to something
  753.         else (i.e.  "Norton Utilities").  This will prevent WinEZ from
  754.         getting confused with the application "Norton Desktop" and the
  755.         group file "Norton Desktop".
  756.  
  757.         Since Passwords are not part of the DOS operating system, WinEZ
  758.         will by-pass all Norton Desktop passwords set when excuting
  759.         an application.  Also, Norton groups (just groups, not
  760.         applications) created with a password will not be part of the
  761.         WinEZ Power Menu.
  762.         Note:  Norton also by-passes his own passwords if you execute a
  763.         program from the file manager utility.  True security really has
  764.         to be done at an operating system level.
  765.  
  766.         When selecting "Rebuild Power Menu," WinEZ will automatically
  767.         save your Norton configuration.  This is necessary in order
  768.         to perform the rebuild of the menus.

  792.         * If you are having trouble entering the registeration information,
  793.           make sure BOTH the registration NAME and NUMBER are being
  794.           type in EXACTLY as specified on the mailed invoice thank you
  795.           letter (this is the name and number we processed your order by).

  797.         * To get the WinEZ "Power Menu" to stay up without having to hold
  798.           the left mouse button down, drag the cursor to the 1st
  799.           application group on the list.  The Power Menu will stay up and
  800.           you may then pick and chose application groups.

  802.         * WinEZ supports up to 25 application groups and 40 applications
  803.           per group.  If you have more groups or applications per group
  804.           (which is hard to imagine), WinEZ will truncate.

  806.         * Menus may not be created under low memory conditions.

  808.         * To make the dragging of the mouse more responsive when using the
  809.           Power Menu, add the following lines to the WIN.INI file (under
  810.           the [Windows] heading) found in your Windows subdirectory:

  815.         * Sometimes in Super VGA mode, WinEZ's icon placement is off by a pel.

  850.         LICENSING AND DISTRIBUTION

  852.         WinEZ is copyrighted and has been released for distribution as
  853.         SHAREWARE.  Please note that a great deal of effort and time has
  854.         been invested in the development of this program.  You are granted
  855.         a license to try WinEZ for a reasonable trial period without risk.
  856.         If, after this time, you find this program useful and intend to use
  857.         it, you are expected to register.  The base registration fee is
  858.         $29.95.

  860.         You will find a registration form at the end of this user's manual
  861.         that outlines the procedures for registering your copy of the
  862.         program.  Please keep in mind that NGS must have a registration
  863.         form on file for you before any product support can be offered.

  865.         Operators of electronic bulletin boards (Sysops) are encouraged to
  866.         post WinEZ for downloading by their users.

  868.         WinEZ may be uploaded to and downloaded from commercial systems

  870.         the subscriber is for on-line time and there is no charge for the
  871.         program.  Those copying, sharing, or electronically transmitting
  872.         the program are required not to delete or modify the copyright
  873.         notice and restrictive notices from the program or documentation;
  874.         anyone doing so will be treated as a contributory copyright

  925.            version of WinEZ, but must write New Generation Software within

  929.            be exceeded.  WinEZ may not be included on any disk sold for
  930.            more than this maximum.  Major CD-ROM or optical disk libraries

  932.            permission to distribute WinEZ.

  934.         4. Vendors may not modify or delete ANY files on the disk.  Again,
  935.            only the shareware version of WinEZ may be distributed.  Vendors
  936.            may add a "GO" program, or a reasonable number of small text

  939.            be allowed to delete the added files.
