  1. Wave Rider 1.20 Release Notes
  2. =============================

  4. The differences between Wave Rider 1.20 and 1.10 are mainly in the look
  5. and feel arena.
  6.  
  7. The most obvious change is the Options tab, which looks like Microsoft
  8. Word's Tab. To get to this option, choose the Options menu, and then
  9. Setup.
  10.  
  11. In the setup area, we added one additional feature, the ability to have
  12. Wave Rider automatically open your pending replies, or automatically
  13. delete them, or ask you. (Reply Handling)
  14.  
  15. Printing
  16. --------
  17.  
  18. Wave Rider prints with the font you use to view messages with, unless you
  19. tell the program otherwise. To change the font you print with to something
  20. that is different, choose File, Printer Font.
  21.  
  22. WARNING - if you choose a font to print with that is a screen font, such
  23. as Terminal, you may not be satisfied with the result. Try choosing a
  24. TrueType font instead.
  25.  
  26. Large Messages
  27. --------------
  28.  
  29. Wave Rider only allows for roughly 30k per message. If you attempt to view
  30. a message that is larger, you will get an error message, and the program
  31. will truncate that message. In 1.10, Wave Rider would GPF. This is a
  32. limitation of the multiline edit box that we use for Wave Rider.
  33.  
  34. Rebuilding Indicies
  35. -------------------
  36.  
  37. Wave Rider now has the ability to rebuild indicies (.ndx) on the fly.
  38. This feature is normally NOT needed, we added it because there are several
  39. doors that allow you to download your mail without having those indicies.
  40. This is a QWK only feature. After you rebuild your indicies, Wave Rider
  41. needs to reconvert your packet information, so there will be a slight
  42. delay. WARNING! This doesn't work if you sysop uses a Qmail 3.0 door.

  44. RIME Routing
  45. ------------
  46.  
  47. RIME Routing is the automatic sending out of a message to the home bbs of
  48. the person you are responding to. This is a QWK only feature, and will not
  49. display unless the packet you are replying to is that sort of packet.

  51. Printing and Saving Replies While In Reply Mode
  52. -----------------------------------------------

  54. Wave Rider will not save or print any replies accurately while you are
  55. still in reply mode. This is because the print and reply code looks on the
  56. hard disk to find the reply before printing. Since you haven't saved the
  57. message yet, you'll not get the proper information.

  59. Taglines
  60. --------
  61.  
  62. The default size for taglines is 57 characters for QWK mode, and 70
  63. characters for Blue Wave mode. Wave Rider now gives you a visual cue in
  64. the taglines list box if your tagline is too long - it will show as a
  65. truncated tagline. You don't get a warning message, but you'll see it when
  66. you select it.

  68. Insert and Overstrike Modes
  69. ---------------------------

  71. When replying, Wave Rider will now allow you to switch between insert and
  72. overstrike mode. When you are in overstrike mode, the cursor will change,
  73. and you will see OVR in the status bar.

  75. BUGS SQUASHED

  78. 1. The Messages, List box now says Replies when you are listing out your
  79.    replies area.
  80.  
  81. 2. Both names in a reply are added to the message to list box when
  82.    replying.

  84. FILES NO LONGER NEEDED

  87. Wave Rider now no longer requires the following two files:

  89.    vlist.dll
  90.    cmdialog.vbx

  92. Wave Rider now needs ctl3d.dll, which should be placed in the
  93. Windows\System directory. You may already have this .dll.

  95. KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH 1.20

  98. There is one bug that we were unable to fix for fear of it breaking other
  99. things. THIS IS A DON'T DO THAT kind of bug.
  100.  
  101. When doing a File, New, and working without a mail packet, you have the
  102. ability to write messages. You also have the ability to go into your
  103. replies area and move back and forth between replies. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GO
  104. PAST THE LAST REPLY. Wave Rider will lock up. You can control-alt-delete
  105. out of it, and recover your replies.
  106.  
  107. If you have a QWK packet that doesn't have a personal.ndx file, you won't
  108. get a Personal Mail area in Wave Rider. You'll see that there are personal
  109. messages to you, but no area.
  110.  
  111. Plans
  112. =====

  114. This is the last of the Wave Rider 1.x series. Unless we find a major bug
  115. that requires immediate fixing, we will be starting on rewriting Wave
  116. Rider from scratch.
  117.  
  118. Why? As Doug added a number of features, and fixed bugs, the code has
  119. gotten unwieldy. Recoding will allow him to add new features still in the
  120. design stages, as well as allow native QWK, which is a common request.
  121.  
  122. This is a major undertaking, and we have no time line on the length of
  123. time it will take for Doug to get to an early beta of Wave Rider 2.0. A
  124. rough guestimate would be third quarter 1994. A lot depends on what
  125. happens during the spring and summer months. To get Wave Rider to the
  126. point it is now has taken roughly one year. Much of the code in 1.x will
  127. be transferable to 2.x.

  144. The differences between Wave Rider 1.10 and 1.01 are numerous.
  145.  
  146. The most obvious change is the ability of the user to change the look
  147. and feel of the program dramatically.
  148.  
  149. Wave Rider 1.10 now allows three different sizes of tools, and added a
  150. Toolbox.
  151.  
  152. Definition: Toolbox - floating Toolbar, resizable. NOTE: the Toolbox
  153. does not "dock", it is free floating.
  154.  
  155. Both the Toolbar and Toolbox can be configured to display any menu
  156. item. Most (99.9%) of the menu items have equivalent icons. If you end
  157. up with a blank grey icon in your Toolbar or Toolbox, it is because
  158. the icon for it does not exist. View Status Bar is one of these.
  159.  
  160. Changes to the Toolbar and Toolbox are immediate.
  161.  
  162. Caution: If you "lose" your floating Toolbar, it may be because it is
  163. physically located off your screen. This may happen occasionally. To
  164. fix this, edit your WaveRdr.ini file, and remove the section titled
  165. [Toolbox].

  167. Hard Coded Settings
  168. ===================

  170. Wave Rider 1.10 now hard codes the number of characters you view on
  171. the screen to 79 characters in View mode, and 75 characters in Reply
  172. mode. This way, there won't be funny wrapping that can characterize
  173. earlier versions of Wave Rider.

  175. Accelerator Keys
  176. ================

  178. You can now redefine your accelerator keys. The menu choice is Options,
  179. Accelerators. NOTE: You must choose Assign to get the changes to
  180. "stick".

  182. Single character key remapping only works in READ mode, not reply
  183. mode.

  185. If you redefine the SPACE bar, it will only do ONE THING! <g> You can
  186. have it replace the page down key, but it WON'T go to the next
  187. message.

  217. to import it as a truncated file.

  219. Fixed problem in Printer Setup when you changed printers, Wave Rider
  220. didn't remember that you had changed it. When printing, you now print
  221. with the font you are reading with.

  223. Speeded up opening of large messages quite a bit, from 1.2 minutes to
  224. about 45 seconds. (1,000 line message) Not that big of a difference,
  225. but we be tryin'!

  304. Q:  How do I delete a reply?

  306. A:  Replies are stored in a virtual area called "Replies."

  308.     1. Choose Replies from the Areas menu. This makes Replies your active
  309.        window.

  311.     2. Choose List from the Messages menu.

  313.     3. Highlight the message you want to delete in that list box.

  315.     4. Choose Delete.

  317. Q:  How do I move from the top of the reply window to the bottom
  318.     without using my mouse?

  320. A:  The bottom window of the reply is a pane, to change panes, use the
  321.     F6 function key.

  323. Q:  Why does WaveRdr convert messages packets to BlueWave format
  324.     before opening?

  326. A:  It was easier to code that way. If we had included both native
  327.     file formats, the resulting executible would have been much
  328.     larger.

  330. Q:  Why do QWK taglines only allow 57 characters, and BlueWave
  331.     taglines allow 70 characters?

  333. A:  During early beta testing, every packet format could use 70
  334.     characters. However, the ... sequence BlueWave taglines use at
  335.     the beginning of each line caused some mail tossers to puke, so we
  336.     hard coded 57 characters in QWK mode.

  338. Q:  Why do replies take forever to come up?
  339.  
  340. A:  Wave Rider loads the tagline file in each time you reply to a
  341.     message. If you have a large number of taglines, it will take
  342.     longer for Wave Rider to display the Reply window.

  344. Q:  Can I register via credit card?
  345.  
  346. A:  You sure can. Crystal Cavern has a credit card door on line to take
  347.     your order. Choose W from the main menu. Or, you can send your
  348.     credit card information via mail.

  350. Q:  What language is Wave Rider written in?  Why is the unzipper a
  351.     Visual Basic application?
  352.  
  353. A:  WaveRdr is written 100% in Visual C++ version 1.5. WRUZ.exe, the
  354.     zipper/unzipper was written with code we purchased from EllTech.
  355.     Their C routines are not available yet. Once they become
  356.     available, WRUZ's functionality will be added to WaveRdr.

  358. Q:  How do I get my Ansi bulletins?
  359.  
  360. A:  AnsiView is the ansi viewer spawned by WaveRdr. Choose View, Ansi
  361.     Message. You will then be given a menu of the most common files.

  363. Q:  Why can't I see all of my messages when using standard VGA?
  364.  
  365. A:  Wave Rider is hard coded to display 79 characters per line when
  366.     viewing messages. On some video displays, VGA, you won't be able
  367.     to see all of the line using a terminal font. There are several
  368.     other font choices that will work well. If you are a registered
  369.     user of Procomm Plus for Windows, it comes with additional TT
  370.     fonts that you can install into your global font lists via the
  371.     Control Panel.

  374. NOTE: This archive now contains an updated version of AnsiView. Fixes
  375. problems with mail packets that have over 25 bulletins in QWK mode.
