- Running Boyan 5.0 under DESQview
-
-
- If you use DESQview (a trademarked product of Quarterdeck Office
- Systems) for multitasking, Boyan 5.0 is an excellent choice for
- communications:
-
- * Boyan will run in a window or invisibly in the background, even on
- an XT-compatible 8088- or 8086-based system.
-
- * Boyan is smart enough to release processor time to other
- applications whenever it has nothing to do, which can significantly
- improve overall system performance.
-
- * To make it easy to get started, Boyan comes with a DESQview Program
- Information File (B5-PIF.DVP).
-
-
- INSTALLING BOYAN IN DESQVIEW:
-
- 1. First install Boyan under DOS.
-
- 2. Start DESQview or, if DESQview is already running, invoke the
- DESQview menu (by default, pressing and releasing the <Alt> key).
-
- 3. Choose the DESQview "Open Window" command.
-
- 4. Choose the DESQview "Add a Program" command.
-
- 5. Choose "Other (Add Program Not in List)" from the Add a Program
- menu.
-
- 6. On the "Add OTHER Program" menu, type the Path (e.g. C:\BOYAN) in
- which you installed Boyan, and press <Enter>.
-
- 7. Back on the Add a Program menu, either move the highlight down to
- "Boyan Comm 5.0 DV" with the down arrow key and press + on the keypad
- to select it, or click on it with a mouse; then press <Enter> or click
- on DONE with a mouse.
-
- 8. Back again on the Add a Program menu, choose DONE. Boyan is now
- installed and will appear on DESQview's Open Window menu.
-
-
- RUNNING BOYAN UNDER DESQVIEW:
-
- By default, Boyan starts up in 25-line mode in a DESQview window, and
- the entire Boyan screen is not normally visible. To make the entire
- Boyan screen visible, invoke the DESQview menu and choose the "Zoom"
- command; use the DESQview Zoom again to return Boyan to a window.
-
- You can also use the DESQview "Rearrange" command and the "Hide"
- option to keep Boyan running but to make it invisible (possibly when
- it is idle or during a long file transfer); use the DESQview "Switch
- Windows" command to select Boyan and make it visible again.
-
- Note that you cannot use the DESQview "Close Window" command on Boyan,
- or exit DESQview while Boyan is running; you must first exit from
- Boyan.
-
-
- MAKING CHANGES:
-
- You can make a number of changes to tune Boyan under DESQview to suit
- your particular taste or configuration. To make such changes:
-
- 1. Invoke the DESQview menu (by default, pressing and releasing the
- <Alt> key) and choose "Change a Program".
-
- 2. Select Boyan by moving the highlight to it with the down arrow key
- followed by the <Enter> key, or by clicking on it with a mouse.
-
- You will now see the standard Change a Program options.
-
- * Press the <F1> key to switch between the standard and Advanced
- Change a Program screens.
-
- * Use the <Tab> and <Shift-Tab> keys or a mouse to move amoung the
- various fields.
-
- * You can use the <Esc> key to abort changes.
-
- * Use the <Enter> key to record your changes.
-
- If you accidentally screw things up badly, you can always use DESQview
- "Delete a Program" to delete the Boyan entry (the DOS installation of
- Boyan will not be affected), and then reinstall Boyan in DESQview in
- the original default configuration.
-
-
- ADVANCED OPTIONS:
-
- 1. By default, Boyan only supports 25 lines under DESQview. To be
- able to use Boyan's 43/50-line mode, you must use DESQview "Change a
- Program Advanced Options" to make the Maximum Height 43 or 50 lines as
- appropriate. (You can use the DESQview "Rearrange" command and the
- "Video" option to see whether a 43 or 50 line text mode is supported
- under DESQview.)
-
- 2. By default, Boyan starts in a DESQview window. To start Boyan
- full-screen, use DESQview "Change a Program Advanced Options" to make
- the Starting Height and Width the same as the Maximum Height and
- Width. The Starting Row and Column should normally both be set to 0
- unless you are running DESQview with more lines than the Starting
- Height. (If your video card supports more than 25 lines, you can use
- the DESQview "Rearrange" command and the "Video" option to change the
- number of lines on the screen. If you can tolerate the smaller text,
- more lines can make it easier to work with multiple windows.)
-
- 3. If you are using DESQview/386, you may want to use DESQview
- "Change a Program" standard options to set "Virtualize text/graphics"
- to T (for Text). Although this won't have any effect on Boyan itself,
- it will allow you to run an application (such as a text editor) that
- is not DESQview-aware from within the Boyan window.
