  2.           * * *   System requirements for AUTOSIG Version 6.8B  * * *

  4.         AUTOSIG (ATO) is the original PC program written for the PC and
  5.         Compuserve.  It not only automates forums functions, including
  6.         the automation of downloading files, it also has the ability to
  7.         run scripts.  Scripts make ATO useful in all CompuServe areas.
  8.  
  9.         ATO is free.  There are no charges or other restrictive
  10.         requirements (though we do ask that you enjoy it!).  All you
  11.         need to do is download the files, make several adjustments in
  12.         your forum options, and you're ready to enjoy the benefits of
  13.         CompuServe without the price of on-line interactive sessions.
  14.         Autosig makes the best of both worlds:  the benefits of
  15.         multiuser mainframes and the benefits of a personal computer.

  18.                      * * *   HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS   * * *

  20.         In general AUTOSIG (ATO) version 6.8B requires the following
  21.         equipment configuration:
  22.  
  23.          o  an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or close compatible.
  24.          o  at least 320K of available memory.
  25.          o  a hard disk is recommended, but not required.
  26.          o  a Hayes command set compatible modem
  27.          o  any display adapter and monitor
  28.  
  29.    -    ATO has been tested on the Compaq portable, Tandy machines,
  30.         Toshiba laptops, the Leading Edge, the Compaq high-end machines,
  31.         the AST Premium line, and a number of compatibles too numerous
  32.         to mention.  All close compatibles will probably work, but be
  33.         sure to check the user's manual for various "switches" that
  34.         might be necessary.

  36.         ATO is network, e.g. LANTASTIC, compatible, although it does not
  37.         allow the sharing of its files with the exception of Novell Netware.

  39.         ATO is NOT compatible with Novell Netware. You will need to run
  40.         ATO without Netware loaded.

  42.         About 320k of *free* memory is required.  More than 320k is
  43.         definitely better. The total amount of
  44.         memory is somewhat dependent upon how many forums you use, the
  45.         number of message headers you want to mark, and some other
  46.         factors.
  47.  
  48.    -    ATO requires at least 250K of disk space for its files. More
  49.         disk space is needed to hold message files and other files that
  50.         are to be downloaded.  A hard disk is not required, but it is
  51.         highly recommended.

  53.    -    A modem capable of autodialing is required.  If you're not
  54.         using a Hayes command set compatible modem, you'll need to be
  55.         familar with your modem's command codes in order to set it up.

  57.         There is built-in support for accessing CompuServe through a
  58.         direct node and through Telenet and Tymnet.  Using ATO's script
  59.         language, you will be able to log on through virtually any
  60.         network, but it may require work on your part in determining
  61.         the correct sequence of prompts and responses.

  63.    -    ATO supports MS and Logitech compatible mouse input devices.
  64.  
  65.    -    ATO supports MDA, Hercules, CGA, EGA, and VGA displays. 25, 43,
  66.         and 50-line displays are supported for those display adapters
  67.         that offer such modes. Graphics is not used or required.

  72.         In general, ATO requires the following software configuration:
  73.  
  74.          o  IBM PC DOS or MS DOS version 3.0 or later
  75.          o  no ill-behaved resident (TSR) programs
  76.          o  the AUTOSIG.EXE program
  77.  
  78.         DOS 3.0 or greater is recommended.  ATO will run fine on DOS 2.x
  79.         systems, but you may experience problems with the "Shell to DOS
  80.         feature" of ATO.  This is an incompatibility with the compiler
  81.         used to create the ATO executable program file and DOS 2.x.

  83.         ATO is DesqView and DoubleDOS aware.  It is also compatible with
  84.         many popular resident programs, but you may have certain memory
  85.         resident utilities installed that can cause problems.

  87.         ATO is compatible with RAM disks (like VDISK), disk caching
  88.         programs (like VCACHE), keyboard enhancers (like PCED), screen
  89.         enhancers (like Ultra Vision), print spoolers (like LTORQ and
  90.         PCACHE).

  92.         If you have a problem, PLEASE let us know in section 1 of
  93.         IBMCOM.  We can usually work it out but, if not, we need to know
  94.         of possible incompatibilities.  ATO is a group effort and we
  95.         appreciate and encourage hearing about your problems, solutions
  96.         and suggestions.

  101.         All AUTOSIG files are located in Library 1 (Autosig) of the IBM
  102.         Communications forum (GO IBMCOM).
  103.  
  104.         At minimum, you'll want to get ATO68B.EXE, which contains the
  105.         executable file and the help file, and ATODOC.EXE which contains
  106.         the documentation file.  These will get you going.  Both are
  107.         self-extracting archives.  When you run them, they tell you what
  108.         to do to install the files.
  109.  
  110.         Otherwise ATO is "modular" in design, so you don't have to
  111.         download what you don't want or need.  However, you may find
  112.         that other programs, such as ACLS, ATOBRO, ATOADV, and
  113.         DLSCAN, will greatly enhance your use of ATO.  Please note that
  114.         the latter files are entirely optional!
