Sports Illustrated For Kids The Everything You Want To Know About Sports
Encyclopedia
Windows Version
Creative Multimedia Corporation
============================================================================
Hi! Thanks for buying Sports Illustrated For Kids' "The Everything You
Want To Know About Sports Encyclopedia" on CD-ROM. We think this is the
best sports product on the market and we hope you have tons of fun with
it.
Here are a few hints to make it easier to use the program:
1. When you first reach the Professor's secret rooms, you'll meet his
trusty robot-helper. The robot will follow you wherever you go and can
help you do things like:
> Go straight to a sport you're interested in
> Search for a word or the name of your favorite player
> Go to the puzzles
> Turn the volume up or down (in the Preferences)
> Save your current location by adding a "Bookmark".
> Go "Home" (where you first see the robot)
> Quit the program
To use the robot, just click on his head anywhere in the program. A menu
will pop down. Click on whatever it is you need.
2. From the "Home" room, clicking on the right or left edges of the
screen will take you to the Professor's collection of sports memorabilia.
You can click on each sports item to learn more about that sport. There
are four different screens full of sports things, so keep clicking the
mouse on the right or left edges!
3. When you're looking at a sports encyclopedia page, "Go Back" (in the
lower left part of the screen) is the way to get rid of anything that is
"active," or in the middle of the screen. For example, if you've just
watched a video, and you want to put the TV away, just click on "Go Back,"
and the TV will go back! Behind each sport's table of contents is a page
from the professor's log book. In that book, he keeps track of which items
he already has in his collection and which ones he hopes to get.
4. The pieces of the puzzles are hard to find. It's supposed to take
you a while to find them all. But, the Jim Thorpe puzzle pieces are all
there, so you can have fun and practice up while you're looking for the
pieces to the other puzzles. After you get the puzzle pieces put
together, you can take them apart by clicking on the nameplate of the
finished puzzle.
By the way, the puzzles can be harder than they seem. You'll know if
you have finished a puzzle, because the lines between the pieces will
disappear. If you think you've got it right, but the lines are not
gone, look closer at all the pieces and make sure they match. It's easy
to make a mistake with these puzzles.
5. If you want to reset the trivia game and start over, you'll have to
sign in with a new name. We don't want any cheating!
Most of all, have fun! You should be able to spend hours and hours
learning about the sports you love, and about the sports you don't know
very well.

Troubleshooting and Performance Tips
Screen Savers
Disable any screen savers before using the SI For Kids Sports Encyclopedia.
Screen savers may interfere with the display of graphics and cursors.
Windows Drivers
Be sure you are using the latest Windows drivers for your graphics and
sound cards. Set your video driver to 640x480x256 colors for best
performance, especially if you encounter any graphcis problems.
Virtual Memory
Check that your Windows system includes a virtual memory swap file (a
permanent file provides the best performance) of the size recommended in
the Windows Setup procedure. Also check that 32-bit Disk Access is
turned on.
General Protection Faults
If you are receiving a general protection fault, or if the program
returns to Windows Program Manager for no reason, there is probably a
conflict between SI For Kids Sports Encyclopedia and some other program
loaded into memory. Try closing all other Windows programs. Disable
programs which are loaded into memory when you boot your computer
(TSRs). You might also try editing the SYSTEM.INI file in the Windows
directory, under the heading [386Enh], to include the line:
EMMExclude=A000-EFFF.
Performance
SI For Kids Sports Encyclopedia uses QuickTime for Windows. To improve
QuickTime performance you might try modifying the QTW.INI file in your
Windows directory. Make the modifications suggested in the QTW.INI
file. If SI For Kids Sports Encyclopedia locks up due to the changes,
you should switch to the original setting. Some video cards may not
work with the 'Optimize=hardware' setting.
If the program runs extremely slowly, check the EMM386 statement in your
Config.SYS file to see if your RAM is being allocated to expanded memory.
If so, try changing the line so that it reads: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
NOEMS'. Save your original file so that you can restore your system to
its original configuration if you need to.
Use the DOS 'mem' command to verify that you have at 500K of
conventional memory. If you do not, consult your DOS manual for ways to
increase conventional memory.
If you are using a video driver with large fonts the Encyclopedia text
may not display correctly. Try changing to a video driver which uses
small or medium fonts.
