ABOUT THE GAME
This game is similar in concept to the game Rodent's Revenge (RR). However,
this game is written for DOS (not Windows) and uses no code or routines
taken from RR. It also contains many features not available in RR.
IF YOU EVER GET STUCK and don't know how to get out of the game, press
<Ctrl> and <Break> at the same time.
REQUIREMENTS
This game requires a VGA (or higher) monitor and card, a 286 or higher
machine, and DOS 3.1 or higher.
HOW TO PLAY
The object of the game is to push the mouse against blocks on the screen,
moving the blocks into position to block in a cat, which will turn into
cheese when completely blocked in. You get points for blocking in a cat
and for eating cheese. The number of points increases as levels go higher,
and as the speed of the game increases. Moving a block on top of a cheese
spot removes the cheese, but doesn't count as eating it.
Be careful! Since you can get a cat, it's only fair that a cat can get
you in return! Whenever a cat gets in a square immediately adjacent to
the mouse, the mouse gets killed! This includes diagonally adjacent
squares.
Oh, by the way....
the cats can move diagonally, but the mouse can only move horizontally and
vertically. Use the arrow keys ON THE NUMERIC KEYBOARD to make the mouse
move.
There are ten levels to the game, with ten cats per level. The mouse has
five lives per game.
TO BEGIN THE GAME
Make sure you are in DOS (not Windows), and make sure you are in the
directory which contains these files. (See the DOS 'cd' command if
you don't know how to do this.) Then type the following line (without
the quotes):
"CAT&MSE"
and press ENTER. The game will begin. Press 5 to begin playing
immediately. You shouldn't have to read all of this document before
you begin playing, so if you're itching to play, go ahead!
OPTIONS
The start-up menu has the following options, which are discussed below:
1. view rules
2. change speed
3. change default graphics (colors and shapes)
4. sound on
5. Play!
In general, to choose an option you should press the number (or letter)
associated with that option. In general, just pressing the appropriate
key will execute that option. However, when an option has a choice which
could require your response to be more than one keypress, you must press
ENTER after typing your choice. When in doubt, type your answer, and if
nothing happens, then press ENTER.
VIEW RULES
Choose this option to see a short summary of the game rules. You can
print these rules to a printer connected to LPT1 (only) by pressing 'P'
while viewing the rules. You will be prompted to turn on your printer
if it is not in a ready-to-print state.
Press any other key to return to the game.
CHANGE SPEED
By default, this game starts at speed 10, which is the slowest available.
The speed controls how fast the cats move, but not how fast the mouse can
move. You get more points for blocking in cats and eating cheese as the
speed gets faster.
To make the cats move faster, enter a number between 1 and 9, inclusive,
then press ENTER. To keep the default speed, enter 10.
CHANGE DEFAULT GRAPHICS (COLORS AND SHAPES)
Pick this option to change the appearance of the colors and the graphics
shapes used during the game. You can be the artist! You cannot change
the basic layout of the game, but you still have considerable ways to
customize the game to your own liking.
After making changes, you have the option to save your changes to disk.
If you do not save to disk, your changes will only apply to the current
session.
If you do choose to save the changes to disk, please note the following:
Changes will be made to the file C&MSETUP.DAT which overwrite the default
values in that file. You may wish to save the default values in case you
decide you don't like your changes. To do that, pick another name for
your backup file, and make a copy of C&MSETUP.DAT to that new filename.
You can then restore it at a later time.
Example:
You choose the name "C&MSETUP.BAK" as your backup data
file name.
From DOS (before you start the game) type:
COPY C&MSETUP.DAT C&MSETUP.BAK
Then run the game as usual and make your desired changes
to colors and/or graphics.
If you later decide that you want to restore the default
colors/graphics, quit the game and then type both of these
lines, again from DOS:
DEL C&MSETUP.DAT
RENAME C&MSETUP.BAK C&MSETUP.DAT
Choosing option 3. from the main menu will give you a new menu:
1. change colors
2. change graphics drawings
3. return to play game
These options are discussed below:
CHANGE COLORS
Only sixteen different colors may be used at any one time, but those 16
colors can cover a very wide range of the spectrum. Before you change
what a color looks like, you should be aware that that color will be altered
EVERYWHERE it is used in the game. As an example, color 7 is the color
that all text is displayed in, so you should not change it to, say, black.
Color 0 (default black) is the background used behind the game, and color
6 (default red) is the background on which the blocks are pushed.
You will be shown colors 0 through 15 and told to pick the number of the
color you want to alter. Enter 16 if you don't want to change any colors,
and you will be returned to the main menu.
If you pick a color to change, a large block will be shown in that color,
along with the present red, green and blue values of that color. Use the
up and down arrow keys on the numeric keyboard to pick which value of the
color you want to change: red, green, or blue. Then use the left and
right arrow keys on the numeric keyboard to adjust the amount of hue to
come from that color (0-63). The color will change to reflect your settings
as you change them. You may continue adjusting any of the component colors
until you are satisfied with your new color.
When you are ready to accept the new color you have developed, press ENTER.
You will then be asked if you want to save this color to disk. Press "y"
to save, "n" not to save.
(You may want to not save the colors until you are sure you like the new
color in the game. In that case, don't save to disk, but instead make
a note of the new values, and save them to disk LATER if you do indeed
like them.)
If you've picked a color to change, but then decide not to change it,
press ENTER twice before you have altered any of the red/green/blue values.
CHANGE GRAPHICS DRAWINGS
This option allows you to change the appearance of the cat, mouse, block,
cheese, and RIP sign. You can make them look like anything you want!
Make a cat chase a bird, or make a person chase a mouse, or just plain
improve on this non-artist's drawings.
Pick the drawing number (1-5) that you want to alter, or pick 6 to return
to the main menu.
Your drawing to change will now be shown in two versions: actual size, and
a blown-up version. You make your changes on the blown-up version, but
can also see them on the small version to see what they will really look
like.
You now have two options on how you'd like to edit the drawing: by using
arrow keys, or by using numbers. Press "a" to use arrow keys (easiest
method) or press "n" to use numbers.
If you've chosen to use the arrow keys, then use them to move the blinking
block until it is on top of a spot you want to change. Then press ENTER.
You will be prompted to enter the new color for this spot. Press ENTER
again once you have typed the new color number.
If you are changing many spots to the same color, you can just press ENTER
twice, and the last color you used will be used again.
Repeat moving the block, pressing ENTER, and entering a new color number,
until you are satisfied with your new drawing. Make sure that the
miniature drawing looks the way you want it to.
Now that you are done editing the drawing, press ENTER while you are on
any spot of the drawing, but this time type 17 as the new color for that
spot. Since color 17 does not exist, this notifies the program that you
are finished. You now have the option to save your new drawing to
disk ('y') or to use it for that session only ('n'), then will be returned
to the main menu.
If you've chosen to enter numbers instead of using the arrow keys, the
process is very similar to that above, but instead of using the arrow
keys you must manually enter the row number and column number of the spot
you wish to change. Use the row and column numbers to the left and top
of the big drawing. The rest of the process is the same as that for arrows.
RETURN TO PLAY GAME
Takes you back to the main menu.
SOUND ON
This is a toggle switch that will turn various sound effects during the
game either on or off. If the menu says "sound on", then the sound is
OFF right now, and choosing this option will turn it ON. If the menu
says "sound off", then the sound is ON right now, and choosing this
option will turn the sound OFF.
PLAY GAME!
This is the whole reason you started! Get out there and play, and
good luck!
PROGRAMMING INFO
(for programmers only)
This program was written entirely in Basic PDS 7.1, mainly because I am
familiar with Basic's graphics capabilities. I also took advantage of
several DOS interrupts for some features; namely detecting a VGA monitor
was present, determining that the printer at LPT1 was online and ready,
and clock ticks to keep the game speed constant no matter how many cats
were on the screen at a time (and make up for differences in machine
speeds).
I used 'ON KEY' statements for mouse movements, but had infrequent but
damaging results when program control sometimes jumped to mouse movement
routines at just the wrong time. To solve that error, I put all mouse
movements into a circular array queue, and only de-queued at certain
allowable times.
