Pallanda is distributed as shareware on an "I trust you" basis and is not in
any form to be considered public domain or free. Considerable effort went
into creating the program and I am retaining full protection under the
copyright laws. However, I also want you to be able to share my games with
your friends. So, please feel free to hand on as many copies as you would
like, as long as you include all of the original files.
If you are going to use Pallanda for your personal enjoyment, whether you got
it from a distributor or a friend, please mail a check or money order to me at
the above address. The registration fee for Pallanda is $15. I depend on
your registering to continue devoting full time to making fun to use programs
that don't require you to adapt to the program. I'd also like your comments
and suggestions. In exchange, I'll add your name to the list of those eligible
for updates, contests, and 24-hour technical support. If you wish, you may
use the registration form by typing PRINT PALLANDA.REG at the DOS prompt.
NOTE: The shareware version comes with five surprise drawings. Attractive
color panels, with the same proportional fonts, replace the other surprises
while you are evaluating the program. The latest version, with eight more
surprise drawings, will be forwarded promptly when you register Pallanda.
Pallanda is designed for full color with high resolution EGA or VGA graphics
and will run on most PC's and work alikes. There is a provision for disabling
the game sounds if you prefer the game to play quietly. The built in mouse
support will work automatically with almost any mouse. If you have any
problems, please let me know.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is a fun game for the "little people", with enough strategy to make it
challenging for Dad and Mom. Prince Pallanda can be included as one of the
four players. The name, Pallanda, comes from 'Pal Land' where everyone plays
happily together and King Pallanda makes sure everyone plays fair. Pallanda
is designed so even youngsters that aren't reading yet can learn to play well.
The object is to land in the winner's circle by moving to the closest color
shown on the spinner. It sounds simple. However, the nearest matching color
is often in the wrong direction and sometimes you must choose between squares
that are the same distance away. There are hidden surprises along the way
with pictures you can watch being drawn. A red wagon with a broken wheel,
that makes you spin for a red square, is one you'll see. Some will give you
an extra turn and others make you skip a turn. Finding King Pallanda's castle
yields an extra bonus. The surprises are hidden in new locations at the start
of each game.
Pallanda maintains a score file with the ten highest games. You can delete or
rename PALLANDA.TOP to start an empty file. The file included has some of the
scores made during the games evaluation. The top ten score window is shown
automatically at the end of each game. If a player qualifies, their name,
score, and date are added to the file.
BASIC RULES:
1. The Escape <Esc> key may be used at most prompts to exit the game.
2. When Pallanda starts, it will ask if you want the sound on. Then it
will ask if you want to play "<S>ingle, <D>ouble, or <T>riple spin".
These options also control the length of the games. If <D>ouble is
selected by pressing the <D> key, you have two chances to spin the color
you want before you must move your marker. The <T>riple spin option
allows three chances and creates a faster game than the <S>ingle or
<D>ouble options.
3. The amount of strategy involved in winning increases with the number of
spins available for each turn. The <S>ingle spin option depends mostly
on luck. The <T>riple spin allows getting the most out of each turn.
4. The next option asks if you want to know where the surprises have been
placed on the game board at the beginning of each game. If you answer
<Y>es, each surprise will be marked with a small circle. After a marker
has been moved to the square, the circle disappears. The game score is
ten points higher if the surprises are left hidden.
Note: The left mouse button is always <Y>es or <Enter> the
right button is <N>o or <Space>.
5. After setting the options, King Pallanda will ask for the names of the
players. If there are less than four players, it will ask if Prince
Pallanda can play too. Prince Pallanda plays a pretty good game and it
takes some strategy to consistently beat him.
6. While getting the names of the players, King Pallanda will also find out
which available color the player wants for their marker and which of the
four corners to use as their starting position. The program will choose
the first player at random with some advantage given to the player with
the lowest score.
7. Each player, in turn, will be asked by name, color, and sound to press
the <Enter> key or the left mouse button to spin.
8. Depending on the spin option, when the spinner stops, the player MUST
move their marker to the closest square with a matching color. If the
prompt indicates another spin is available, you may press <Enter> to
spin again. If you start moving your marker you must complete the move.
Note: Pallanda will chirp and tell you if a move is not fair. Often
two squares are the same distance away and you may choose which gives
the best advantage.
9. The markers may be moved around the board with the cursor keys or a
mouse. To use the mouse, point to the square where you want to move and
press the right button. When using the cursor keys, press the <Space>
bar when your marker is where you want it. If you lose track of where
you started, the <Home> key returns the marker to its starting position.
10. If you move to a colored square with a hidden or marked surprise, you'll
hear a short melody while the program draws a picture or colored panel.
Some are hazards and some are helpers. The surprise description will
always tell you what was found and the bonus or penalty.
11. To win, you must move your marker so the winner's circle, in the middle,
is the closest orange square and have the spinner stop on orange. The
spinner colors can make you move away from the center several times
before you can move towards the middle again.
12. The score is based on how many moves were required and the surprises
encountered along the way. Each player starts with a score of 100 (or
90 if the surprises are marked) from which each spin and squares moved
is subtracted. Surprises are added or subtracted from the total. The
scores are never allowed to go below 20.
INSTALLATION:
You may copy the Pallanda files into any directory on hard disk or floppy.
The only requirement is that all of the files associated with the program,
except for the batch file, must be in the same directory.

PLAYING QUIET:
If you wish to disable the music at the beginning of the game, add the word

sound back on during the game.
