- Space, the first (of the author's knowledge) multiplayer, 3 dimensional,
- real time space warfare game (with an X11 interface) on which individual
- players can be located on different machines across the network, is now ready
- for initial release! The game can be played on any terminal (via the curses
- library) , however it's best played on an X Window system.
-
- The game consists of a galaxy of 30 sectors cubed, each sector of which is
- 100,000 units across. Top speed for ships is about 20,000 units/second so
- that means the galaxy is quite large! There are 10,000 stars and 100 planets.
- Players can "own" planets, dock to them, allow other players to dock to their
- planets in order to transfer power and for safety from others. Ships can fire
- torpedos, phasers, and lay mines.
-
- Since all players are in the same game no matter where on the Internet they
- play, each player must be able to communicate to the central server (the
- "Galactic Coordinator"). This being the case, in order to play the game you
- must have Internet access to "ncgia.ucsb.edu". Thus, there is little
- motivation to post the sources since if you can play the game, you can FTP
- them yourself! Just FTP to "ncgia.ucsb.edu" (128.111.254.105 or
- 128.111.105.65) as user "anonymous" and login with any password. Grab a copy
- of either "space.tar" or "space.tar.Z" (uncompressed and compressed versions
- respectively), untar it into a new subdirectory, and follow the instructions
- in the README file.
