- +------------------------------------------------------+
- | Welcome to "User Supported Software". |
- | This remarkable revolution in software distribution |
- | was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim Button and Andrew |
- | Fluegelman. It has become a major force in the |
- | software industry, helping to drive software prices |
- | down and to eliminate copy protection schemes. |
- +------------------------------------------------------+
-
-
- HERE'S HOW USER SUPPORTED SOFTWARE WORKS:
-
- You are encouraged to copy the program diskettes and share them freely
- with others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs,
- at your own pace and in the luxury of your own home or workplace.
- This is not a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working
- version of the program.
-
- If, after trying out the programs, you decide to continue to use them,
- you are trusted to purchase the programs from the program's author, or
- from an authorized dealer.
-
-
- Why pay at all? We're glad you asked!
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- * You receive a CURRENT copy of the program with a printed
- manual (where applicable)
- * One year of technical support - by phone or written
- * Notification of updates (and fixes, if required)
- * Inexpensive upgrade offers
- * Notification of new products
- * Your input and ideas help shape future products
- * Periodic offers and "deals" (for our customers only)
- * Access to the online ButtonWare Bulletin Board, which
- means:
- - Information and announcements (on line)
- - Communication with other ButtonWare users
- - More technical support, and helpful tips/pointers
- * A sense of pride and ownership, in having honestly
- participated in the User Supported Software revolution
- * You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
- distribution method which doesn't rely on expensive
- advertising campaigns.
-
-
- So please, dive in and enjoy the fun of sharing good software legally
- with your friends and associates. But please be aware of the
- following restrictions, designed to protect the community of User
- Supported Software users and authors, and to prevent certain greedy
- people from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good
- will of User Supported Software authors:
-
- 1. No price or consideration may be charged. However, a distribution
- cost may be charged for the cost of the diskette, shipping, and
- handling, so long as it's not more than $9 total.
-
- 2. The files and programs on the disks can not be modified in any
- way, and must always be distributed together.
-
- 3. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive
- package.
-
- 4. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
-
- 5. The printed manuals cannot be copied or reproduced in any way.
-
- 6. In the case of distribution via computerized "bulletin boards" or
- through any other telecommunications link the following must be
- done:
- * X-Modem or some other error checking protocol must be used
- * All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be
- transferred in library format. That means the files have
- all been combined into one file. You can get assistance with
- this procedure from the Technical Support Department at
- ButtonWare
-
- 7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a
- classroom, you must provide them with the following written notice:
-
- +-----------------------------------------------------+
- | These diskettes are distributed to you through the |
- | courtesy of your school and instructor, and |
- | Jim Button. No royalty or registration fee has |
- | been paid for the programs, which are for your use |
- | and evaluation as a student. |
- | |
- | If you wish to receive technical support from |
- | ButtonWare, as well as announcements of updates and |
- | improvements to the programs, you must first become |
- | a "registered user." You do that by purchasing |
- | each program you plan to use - from an authorized |
- | dealer or directly from ButtonWare: |
- | |
- | Jim Button |
- | P.O. Box 5786 |
- | Bellevue, WA 98006 |
- | |
- | You may also register by calling our toll-free |
- | order line, 1-800-JBUTTON. |
- +-----------------------------------------------------+
-
- 8. PC-Type+ may not be copied or shared outside of the United States,
- Canada and England. We believe that most foreign users are best
- served by their own publishers who sell licensed versions of
- PC-Type+.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- PC-TYPE+ READ.ME
-
- Before you do anything else, make backup copies of all three diskettes
- provided. It is best to make these backups with the DISKCOPY.COM
- program provided with your DOS diskette. Since there are
- subdirectories on the disks, it is easier and less error prone than
- using the COPY command.
-
- If you want to install PC-TYPE+ on your fixed disk, then insert the
- diskette with this READ.ME file in drive A and enter the commands:
-
- A:
- FINSTALL
-
- Then just answer the questions and follow the directions.
-
- GETTING ACQUAINTED
- ------------------
- The easiest way to get acquainted with PC-TYPE+ is:
- (1) Place the HELP diskette in drive A.
- (2) Place the PC-TYPE program diskette in drive B: and enter the
- command B: (or move to the directory containing PC-TYPE+ if you
- have a fixed disk).
- (3) Enter the command: PCTYPE /HELP
- (4) You will then be presented with a list of files. The file INFO
- should be highlighted. Press F10 to select that file. It will
- inform you where to look first.
-
-

-
-
-
- FIXED DISKS
- -----------
-
- If you have a fixed disk and FINSTALL does not work properly,
- first try to eliminate any path statement with the command:
-
- PATH=
-
- after the DOS prompt (and press the enter key) and try it again. If
- it still does not work, then make the following two subdirectories on
- your fixed disk:
-
- \pct_help and \pct_dic
-
- Copy the files on the disk labelled HELP with the command:
-
- copy a:\pct_help\*.* X:\pct_help
-
- and copy the files on the disk labelled DICT with the command:
-
- copy a:\pct_dic\*.* X:\pct_dic
-
- where "X" is the drive letter for your fixed disk.
-
- Finally copy the file PCTYPE.EXE from this diskette (labelled PGM) to
- the subdirectory of your choice (or the root directory if you prefer).
-
- Additional setup information is contained in the file PATHS.LOC.
-
-
-
-
- GREEN-SCREENS
- -------------
-
- If you use a non-color graphics monitor, you should use the parameter
- /GREEN when you first call PC-TYPE+, e.g.,
-
- PC-TYPE /GREEN
-
- and then set the attributes to black and white as follows:
-
- (1) Press F8
- (2) Press F2
- (3) Tab to the field labelled "Screen Attributes (Colors)" and
- press F10.
- (4) Set the Screen and Menu Attributes to "07" and the Field
- attribute to "70".
- (5) Press F10.
- (6) Press Esc and answer the question "Save Modifications?" by
- pressing the "Y" key.
- (7) Answer the question "Save Printer defaults or All defaults?"
- by pressing the "A" key.
- (8) Answer the question "Save to File or to PC-TYPE?" by pressing
- the "P" key.
- (9) Enter the PATHname of the directory containing the PCTYPE.EXE
- file and press F10.
- (10) Select the appropriate .EXE file by tabbing to the file PCTYPE
- and press the F10 key.
- (11) Press any key.
- (12) Press F4 to exit.
-
-
-
-
- SCREEN MEMORY for NON-COMPATIBLE PCs
- ------------------------------------
-
- If your PC is not truly IBM compatible, then you MUST use a special
- parameter when you first call PC-TYPE+.
-
- If you are nearly compatible, use the parameter /BIOS.
- If you are not very compatible at all, use the parameter /ANSI.
-
- e.g.,
- PCTYPE /ANSI
-
-
- (NOTE: for the /ANSI mode to work, you must have the line
-
- DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
-
- in your CONFIG.SYS file.)
-
- Then:
-
- (1) Press F8
- (2) Press F2
- (3) Tab to the field labelled "Screen Mode" and press F10.
- (4) Select the appropriate mode with the Tab key and press F10.
- (5) Follow steps (6) through (12) under the heading "GREEN" above.
-
-
-
-
-
- NON-COMPATIBLE and GREEN
- ------------------------
-
-
- If both of the above two conditions are true for you, then call
- PC-TYPE+ with the command:
-
- PCTYPE /GREEN /BIOS
- or
- PCTYPE /GREEN /ANSI
-
-
- Then follow steps (1)-(4) above, and steps (3)-(12) under GREEN.
-
-
-
- PRINTERS
- --------
-
- The list of printer files below has been provided on your help disk.
- Before you are totally finished, you will want to pull the appropriate
- printer file into PC-TYPE+ and make its data permanent. Instructions
- on how to do this are provided in your PC-TYPE+ manual and in the HELP
- file DFLTS_RD. PC-TYPE+ is distributed with the EPSON printer codes
- in place.
-
- If your printer is not supplied in the list below, you will have to
- enter your printer codes for BOLD, UNDERLINE, etc. in the PRINTER
- ESCAPE CODES subscreen of the MODIFY DEFAULTS screen. Detailed
- information on how to do this is provided in your PC-TYPE+ manual and
- in the HELP file ESC_CODE.

- PCjr AND KEY TRONICS KEYBOARD USERS
- -----------------------------------
-
- PC-TYPE+ is delivered with an option set to disable the NumLock key
- when inside the program to prevent you from getting numbers in your
- text should you accidentally press the NumLock key.
-
- If you use a PCjr or a Key Tronics keyboard, you will want to turn
- this feature off so that your keyboard will function as expected.
- Your PC-TYPE+ manual describes how to do this. The information is
- also available in the HELP file NMBR_PAD.
-
-
-
-
-
- DOCUMENTATION OVERSIGHTS
- ------------------------
-
- A PC-TYPE+ feature was not included in the PC-TYPE+ manual. This
- feature allows you to change the name of the file you are editing
- before saving the file to disk. No changes are made to the disk
- however, until the file is saved.
-
- To implement this feature, move the cursor to the Command Line and
- type the command:
-
- NAME filespec
-
- and then press the enter key. The reference name of the file at the
- top of your PC-TYPE+ screen will be changed to reflect the new name.
- You may enter a full file specification including drive and path.
-
- Example:
-
- NAME b:\subd1\newname.doc
-
- If the file you were editing had been "ABC.DOC", when you execute the
- above command, the current file will now be referenced as
- "B:\SUBD1\NEWNAME.DOC". When you save the file, it will be saved as
- "NEWNAME.DOC" in subdirectory "SUBD1" on your B drive.
-
- NOTE: The validity of the file specification you provide will not be
- checked until you actually try to save the file.
-
- ---------------------------
-
- There is a limit of 40 characters to the special .FORCE field in
- Mail Merge.
-
- ---------------------------
-
- If you want a New Header Definition to begin at the beginning of your
- file, place it at the very top of the file. Do not place any "No
- Print Defn." comments before it, or the Header will not be recognized
- for the first page and the default Header will be used.
-
