  2. Welcome to DaVinci eMAIL
  3.  
  4.  This  booklet  will explain how to use the most  basic  and
  5.  essential features of DaVinci eMAIL.  To learn how  to  use
  6.  some  of  the  more  powerful features, try  using  DaVinci
  7.  eMAILÆs  on-line help, or just experiment.  Thank  you  for
  8.  Test Driving eMAIL.

  14. Before You Begin
  15. FOR NON-NOVELL USERS
  16.  Please  call  DaVinci Technical Support for  step  by  step
  17.  installation instructions.
  18. FOR NOVELL NETWARE USERS ONLY
  19.  Before  you begin installing eMAIL, you will need to decide
  20.  which users will be running eMAIL.  You have two options:
  21.   1)   If you only want a subset of your users to run eMAIL,
  22.    create  a  new  group in SYSCON which contains  only  the
  23.    eMAIL  users.  When installing, eMAIL will prompt  for  a
  24.    group  from  which to set up users.  Specify  your  newly
  25.    created  eMAIL group, and those users will be set  up  to
  26.    run eMAIL.
  27.   2)   If  you  want all your users to run eMAIL, you  donÆt
  28.    have  to  do  anything.  When eMAIL  prompts  you  for  a
  29.    group,  use  the  default group EVERYONE,  and  all  your
  30.    users will be set up to run to run eMAIL.
  31.  After  you  have installed, you can easily  add  or  remove
  32.  eMAIL  users  by running SYSCON, adding the users  to  your
  33.  eMAIL  group,  exiting SYSCON and running ADMIN,  which  is
  34.  located   in   the  ADMIN  subdirectory   of   your   eMAIL
  35.  installation.
  36. Installing eMAIL
  37.  To  install eMAIL, place the eMAIL INSTALL disk into  drive
  38.  A:,   and  type  A:INSTALL.   This  will  start  the  eMAIL
  39.  installation  program.   You will  be  asked  a  number  of
  40.  questions.   This section will give a brief description  of
  41.  the  question, and a recommended response.   Feel  free  to
  42.  ignore the recommended response for your individual setup.
  43. Are you upgrading from a previous version of DaVinci eMAIL?
  44.  If  you have an older version of DaVinci, this option would
  45.  allow  you  to upgrade it to the most recent version.  This
  46.  kit  is specifically designed for new users, so this option
  47.  should not be used.  Recommended: No.
  48. Do You Wish to Install eMAIL using the Advanced
  49. Installation?
  50.  You  would  use the Advanced Installation if you wanted  to
  51.  change the default for one of the following things:
  52.   1)   Specify  the  locations  of each  eMAIL  subdirectory
  53.    separately.     In    the   basic    installation,    all
  54.    subdirectories   are  placed  beneath  the   main   eMAIL
  55.    directory.  Recommended: No.è  2)   Choose  between a shared mailbox system or individual
  56.    mailboxes.  Shared mailboxes reduce the amount  of  space
  57.    required   for  multiple  copies  of  the  same  message.
  58.    Recommended: No.
  59.   3)    For   installations  using  MHS,  specify   an   MHS
  60.    application  name other than DVSEMAIL.  This  would  only
  61.    be  done  if  you  had  other MHS applications  installed
  62.    which  required  a different preferred application  name.
  63.    Recommended: No.
  64.   4)   If  installing on Novell NetWare, take  advantage  of
  65.    NetWare  specific  enhancements. These enhancements  will
  66.    allow  you to administrate your eMAIL installation simply
  67.    by  modifying  the  eMAIL  group  in  SYSCON.  Otherwise,
  68.    administration will be based upon your MHS  installation.
  69.    Recommended: Yes.
  70.  If  you  decide  not to use the Advanced Installation,  the
  71.  recommended defaults will be applied to the options  listed
  72.  above.
  73. Install will ask for the eMAIL directory
  74.  Enter  the drive letter, including a path, where  eMAIL  is
  75.  to  be  installed.   The INSTALL program  will  create  the
  76.  directory  if you have not already created it, as  well  as
  77.  several  subdirectories.  Your answer should end  with  the
  78.  name of the eMAIL directory and is limited to a maximum  of
  79.  eighteen  (18) characters including backslashes.   Example:
  80.  ôP:\APPS\EMAILö.   Do NOT type ô\eMAILö,  ôm:..\EMAILö,  or
  81.  ôSERVER/VOL:EMAILö.  You must have at  least  11  megabytes
  82.  of  available  disk space for the eMAIL directory  and  10K
  83.  per user.
  84. Install will ask if you wish to use MHS or MHS Local
  85.  MHSLocal  does  not  require that  MHS  be  installed,  but
  86.  limits  your mail system to one server.  It can be upgraded
  87.  to  a  full MHS installation later.  If you choose  to  use
  88.  real  MHS, INSTALL will then ask you where MHS is  located.
  89.  Note:   You  must have successfully installed MHS  on  your
  90.  file  server  and  run it at least once  before  installing
  91.  eMAIL.
  92. Install will ask if you want your names displayed ôFirst
  93. Lastö or ôLast, Firstö
  94.  eMAIL can display names in its address book as either  ôAbe
  95.  Lincolnö or ôLincoln, Abeö.
  96.  Recommended: First Last.
  97. Install will ask you to enter the name of your host and
  98. workgroup
  99.  The  host  and  workgroup name are used  to  identify  your
  100.  company  to  the  MHS system when you connect  to  external
  101.  hosts.   If you choose only to use MHSLocal, the  host  and
  102.  workgroup  name will only affect your address books.   Note
  103.  that the name is limited to 8 characters.
  104.  Recommended: Your Company name or an abbreviation of it.
  105. If on NetWare, INSTALL will ask you for the Novell group
  106. name
  107.  Please see the ôBefore You Beginö at the beginning of  this
  108.  section.
  109.  Recommended: The group you set up for eMAIL.
  110. Install will ask you to specify a Domain name for your eMAIL
  111. installation
  112.  ôDomainsö are the units that eMAIL uses to organize names.
  113.  Recommended:  Company Name.
  114. Install will ask for your serial number
  115.  This  number  is  printed on the label of the  Installation
  116.  diskette.
  117. Completing the installation
  118.  Follow  the prompts to complete installation.  If you  have
  119.  any  questions or problems with this procedure, please call
  120.  DaVinci  Technical Support.  The number is  in  the  inside
  121.  cover of your package.
  122.  If  you  wish  to expand the number of users  who  can  use
  123.  eMAIL,  contact  DaVinci  Systems  or  your  local  DaVinci
  124.  Reseller  to  obtain  User  increase  disks.   Because   of
  125.  eMAILÆs scalable architecture, you can increase your  eMAIL
  126.  installation from 5 users to 5,000.
  127.  DaVinci   eMAIL  is  a  product  designed   to   meet   the
  128.  connectivity  needs  of  your organization,  whether  those
  129.  needs  are  confined to a single local area  network  or  a
  130.  widely  diversified multi-platform network that  spans  the
  131.  globe.   The use of the MHS standard ensures a wide variety
  132.  of  options.  For example, FAX gateways are available  that
  133.  allow  your  users  to  both send and  receive  faxes  from
  134.  within  eMAIL.   Or, if you need X.400 connectivity,  there
  135.  are  a number of gateways on the market that can meet  your
  136.  demands.
  137.  These  solutions, along with many others, are discussed  in
  138.  documents  available  from DaVinci  Resellers  or  directly
  139.  from  DaVinci  Systems.  If you have a  need,  chances  are
  140.  youÆll find a solution in one of these documents.

  145. Installing eMAIL
  146.  Place  the eMAIL Installation disk into drive A:  and  type
  147.  INSTALL  <enter>.   This will start the eMAIL  installation
  148.  program.  You will be asked a number of questions, most  of
  149.  which  are  self-explanatory.   This  section  covers   the
  150.  questions  in  more  detail.  Be sure  to  answer  all  the
  151.  questions.
  152. INSTALL will ask for the eMAIL directory
  153.  Enter  the drive letter, including a path, where  eMAIL  is
  154.  to  be  installed.   The INSTALL program  will  create  the
  155.  directory  if you have not already created it, as  well  as

  179. Run ADMIN to complete the installation process
  180.  After  the  installation process is  complete,  eMAIL  will
  181.  pause   for   confirmation  before  running  the  ADMIN.EXE
  182.  process.   The ADMIN process adds users.  Later,  when  you
  183.  want to add additional users, run SYSCON, add the users  to
  184.  your eMAIL group, exit SYSCON and run ADMIN located in  the
  185.  ADMIN subdirectory for your eMAIL installation.

  190.  To  upgrade your Test Drive kit to the full product, simply
  191.  contact  your  DaVinci  Reseller to  get  your  license  of
  192.  DaVinci  eMAIL  and install it right over your  test  drive
  193.  installation.   The  time lock will  be  removed  and  your
  194.  mailboxes  preserved.  Buy before your 30 days  is  up  and
  195.  you  wonÆt  have a single day of downtime.  (If  your  time
  196.  does  expire,  donÆt  worry.  All  of  your  mail  will  be
  197.  preserved until you can upgrade.)

  200. Running DaVinci eMAIL

  202. Running eMAIL for DOS
  203.  Go  to  the  directory where eMAIL is  installed  and  type
  204.  EMAIL <User Name>.
  205.   í  If  you  are using Novell NetWare, you do not  need  to
  206.    supply the User Name.
  207.   í  To  run eMAIL as a TSR, use the parameter -t before the
  208.    User Name.

  210. Running eMAIL for Windows
  211.  Start  Microsoft Windows (version 3.0 or greater).   Choose
  212.  Run  from  the  File menu in Program Manager.   Go  to  the
  213.  directory   where  eMAIL  was  installed   and   click   on
  214.  EMAILWIN.EXE.   Move the insertion point to  the  box  with
  215.  EMAILWIN.EXE  in it, click after the word,  and  type  your
  216.  User Name.  Click on OK to start eMAIL.
  217.   í  If you are using Novell NetWare, you do not need to add
  218.    your User Name.

  220.    instructions  on  how to add the eMAIL application  to  a
  221.    Program Manager group of your choosing.
