Installing DaVinci eMAIL
Before You Begin
FOR NON-NOVELL USERS
Please call DaVinci Technical Support for step by step
installation instructions.
FOR NOVELL NETWARE USERS ONLY
Before you begin installing eMAIL, you will need to decide
which users will be running eMAIL. You have two options:
1) If you only want a subset of your users to run eMAIL,
create a new group in SYSCON which contains only the
eMAIL users. When installing, eMAIL will prompt for a
group from which to set up users. Specify your newly
created eMAIL group, and those users will be set up to
run eMAIL.
2) If you want all your users to run eMAIL, you donÆt
have to do anything. When eMAIL prompts you for a
group, use the default group EVERYONE, and all your
users will be set up to run to run eMAIL.
After you have installed, you can easily add or remove
eMAIL users by running SYSCON, adding the users to your
eMAIL group, exiting SYSCON and running ADMIN, which is
located in the ADMIN subdirectory of your eMAIL
installation.
Installing eMAIL
To install eMAIL, place the eMAIL INSTALL disk into drive
A:, and type A:INSTALL. This will start the eMAIL
installation program. You will be asked a number of
questions. This section will give a brief description of
the question, and a recommended response. Feel free to
ignore the recommended response for your individual setup.
Are you upgrading from a previous version of DaVinci eMAIL?
If you have an older version of DaVinci, this option would
allow you to upgrade it to the most recent version. This
kit is specifically designed for new users, so this option
should not be used. Recommended: No.
Do You Wish to Install eMAIL using the Advanced
Installation?
You would use the Advanced Installation if you wanted to
change the default for one of the following things:
1) Specify the locations of each eMAIL subdirectory
separately. In the basic installation, all
subdirectories are placed beneath the main eMAIL
directory. Recommended: No.è 2) Choose between a shared mailbox system or individual
mailboxes. Shared mailboxes reduce the amount of space
required for multiple copies of the same message.
Recommended: No.
3) For installations using MHS, specify an MHS
application name other than DVSEMAIL. This would only
be done if you had other MHS applications installed
which required a different preferred application name.
Recommended: No.
4) If installing on Novell NetWare, take advantage of
NetWare specific enhancements. These enhancements will
allow you to administrate your eMAIL installation simply
by modifying the eMAIL group in SYSCON. Otherwise,
administration will be based upon your MHS installation.
Recommended: Yes.
If you decide not to use the Advanced Installation, the
recommended defaults will be applied to the options listed
above.
Install will ask for the eMAIL directory
Enter the drive letter, including a path, where eMAIL is
to be installed. The INSTALL program will create the
directory if you have not already created it, as well as
several subdirectories. Your answer should end with the
name of the eMAIL directory and is limited to a maximum of
eighteen (18) characters including backslashes. Example:
ôP:\APPS\EMAILö. Do NOT type ô\eMAILö, ôm:..\EMAILö, or
ôSERVER/VOL:EMAILö. You must have at least 11 megabytes
of available disk space for the eMAIL directory and 10K
per user.
Install will ask if you wish to use MHS or MHS Local
MHSLocal does not require that MHS be installed, but
limits your mail system to one server. It can be upgraded
to a full MHS installation later. If you choose to use
real MHS, INSTALL will then ask you where MHS is located.
Note: You must have successfully installed MHS on your
file server and run it at least once before installing
eMAIL.
Install will ask if you want your names displayed ôFirst
Lastö or ôLast, Firstö
eMAIL can display names in its address book as either ôAbe
Lincolnö or ôLincoln, Abeö.
Recommended: First Last.
Install will ask you to enter the name of your host and
workgroup
The host and workgroup name are used to identify your
company to the MHS system when you connect to external
hosts. If you choose only to use MHSLocal, the host and
workgroup name will only affect your address books. Note
that the name is limited to 8 characters.
Recommended: Your Company name or an abbreviation of it.
If on NetWare, INSTALL will ask you for the Novell group
name
Please see the ôBefore You Beginö at the beginning of this
section.
Recommended: The group you set up for eMAIL.
Install will ask you to specify a Domain name for your eMAIL
installation
ôDomainsö are the units that eMAIL uses to organize names.
Recommended: Company Name.
Install will ask for your serial number
This number is printed on the label of the Installation
diskette.
Completing the installation
Follow the prompts to complete installation. If you have
any questions or problems with this procedure, please call
DaVinci Technical Support. The number is in the inside
cover of your package.
If you wish to expand the number of users who can use
eMAIL, contact DaVinci Systems or your local DaVinci
Reseller to obtain User increase disks. Because of
eMAILÆs scalable architecture, you can increase your eMAIL
installation from 5 users to 5,000.
DaVinci eMAIL is a product designed to meet the
connectivity needs of your organization, whether those
needs are confined to a single local area network or a
widely diversified multi-platform network that spans the
globe. The use of the MHS standard ensures a wide variety
of options. For example, FAX gateways are available that
allow your users to both send and receive faxes from
within eMAIL. Or, if you need X.400 connectivity, there
are a number of gateways on the market that can meet your
demands.
These solutions, along with many others, are discussed in
documents available from DaVinci Resellers or directly
from DaVinci Systems. If you have a need, chances are
youÆll find a solution in one of these documents.
Installation for Test Drive Copy
Installing eMAIL
Place the eMAIL Installation disk into drive A: and type
INSTALL <enter>. This will start the eMAIL installation
program. You will be asked a number of questions, most of
which are self-explanatory. This section covers the
questions in more detail. Be sure to answer all the
questions.
INSTALL will ask for the eMAIL directory
Enter the drive letter, including a path, where eMAIL is
to be installed. The INSTALL program will create the
directory if you have not already created it, as well as
several subdirectories. Your answer should end with the
name of the eMAIL directory and is limited to a maximum of
eighteen (18) characters including backslashes. Example:
ôP:\APPS\EMAILö. Do NOT type ô\EMAILö, ôM:..\EMAILö, or
ôSERVER/VOL:EMAILö. You must have at least 11 megabytes
of available disk space for the eMAIL directory and 10K
per user.
INSTALL will ask you to enter the name of your host and
workgroup
The host and workgroup name are used to identify your
company to the MHS system when you connect to external
hosts. Since your test drive installation uses an
abbreviated version of MHS, you will not be able to
connect to other hosts; therefore, the host and workgroup
name you enter will only affect your address books.
INSTALL will ask you for the Novell group name, with the
default EVERYONE
Instead of the default EVERYONE, you should enter the name
of the group you created in SYSCON.
INSTALL will ask you to specify a domain name for this eMAIL
installation
ôDomainsö are the units that eMAIL uses to organize names.
Type a name that describes the users on this file server.
Run ADMIN to complete the installation process
After the installation process is complete, eMAIL will
pause for confirmation before running the ADMIN.EXE
process. The ADMIN process adds users. Later, when you
want to add additional users, run SYSCON, add the users to
your eMAIL group, exit SYSCON and run ADMIN located in the
ADMIN subdirectory for your eMAIL installation.
Yes, IÆve discovered the power of DaVinci eMAIL!
To upgrade your Test Drive kit to the full product, simply
contact your DaVinci Reseller to get your license of
DaVinci eMAIL and install it right over your test drive
installation. The time lock will be removed and your
mailboxes preserved. Buy before your 30 days is up and
you wonÆt have a single day of downtime. (If your time
does expire, donÆt worry. All of your mail will be
preserved until you can upgrade.)
