  38. MICROSOFT PERSONAL WEB SERVER OVERVIEW

  41. Welcome to the Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS) Beta 1.
  42.  
  43. Microsoft Personal Web Server is a network file and application server 
  44. that transmits information in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) pages 
  45. using the HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP). It provides most of 
  46. the functionality of Microsoft Internet Information Server, including 
  47. the ability to do the following: 
  48.  
  49. - Publish Web pages on the Internet or over a LAN on an intranet.
  50. - Transmit or receive files using the FTP service.
  51.  
  52. Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 is an easy-to-use and 
  53. easy-to-manage Web server that supports the following features:

  55. - HTTP service
  56. - FTP service
  57. - ISAPI and CGI scripts 
  58. - ODBC32 data source and HTTP links to ODBC (HTTPODBC) 
  59. - Pass-through security to NT and Novell NetWare
  60. - Local-user security if Microsoft File and Print Sharing is not 
  61.   installed
  62. - Security Socket Layer (not supported in this beta release)
  63. - Remote administration (Web-based application)

  68. PWS ADMINISTRATION
  69. ==================

  71. PWS can be administered remotely by any client running an Internet 
  72. browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. 
  73. To access the Web-based application, you can:
  74.  
  75. - Open Control Panel, double-click the PWS icon, click the 
  76.   Administration tab, and then click the Web Admin button.
  77.

  80. - Right-click the PWS icon on the taskbar, and then click Administer.

  83. PWS SECURITY SYSTEM
  84. ===================

  86. Access controls are set to directories only, such as Windows 95 
  87. File and Print Sharing for Microsoft network or NetWare network 
  88. using user-level security.

  90. Pass-Through Security
  91. ---------------------
  92. - If your computer is set up for user-level access control over a 
  93.   network, then the names you add to the user list for Personal Web 
  94.   Server on your computer must also be in the user list for the NT 
  95.   domain, NetWare server 3.x, and NetWare 4.x using Bindery emulation.

  98. - Like Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), PWS uses a secured 
  99.   client authentication based on Windows NT security protocol. In order 
  100.   to support this protocol, clients will have to use Microsoft Internet 
  101.   Explorer 2.0 and Ientlm.exe (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/).

  103. Share-Level Security
  104. --------------------
  105. - If your computer is set up to use share-level security, you cannot 
  106.   use a user list to restrict access to your Web page. 
  107.  
  108. - Password protection for share-level security is not supported in 
  109.   Microsoft Personal Web Server Beta 1.
  110.  
  111. Local-User Security
  112. ------------------- 
  113. - If Windows 95 is not configured to support File and Print Sharing 
  114.   for Microsoft network or NetWare network, PWS will use a local user 
  115.   database to manage user-level security for your Web server virtual 
  116.   roots and their subdirectories.

  118. - Managing users is possible through the Web-based application.

  121. KNOWN ISSUE
  122. ===========

  124. - If you are using PWS with local-user security, the Windows 95 
  125.   Dial-Up Networking server does not work.
