  42. Internet Mail is a new e-mail program designed specifically for 
  43. the Internet. At this time, you cannot use Microsoft Internet Mail 
  44. to access your e-mail account with any of the following services: 
  45. MS Mail, cc:Mail, The Microsoft Network (MSN), CompuServe, America 
  46. OnLine (AOL), and Microsoft Exchange Server. If you don't know 
  47. whether your system uses these services, contact your administrator 
  48. or your Internet service provider and ask if they support SMTP/POP3
  49. mail clients.

  52. MICROSOFT INTERNET NEWS
  53. =======================
  54.  
  55. Microsoft Internet News enables you to read bulletin-board discussion 
  56. groups, such as the Usenet, using NNTP-based news servers.
  57.  
  58. Contact your Internet service provider for the name of the news server 
  59. that you should use.
  60.  
  61. This product can also be used for support on a variety of Microsoft 
  62. products on the news server msnews.microsoft.com.
  63.  
  64.  
  65. KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
  66. ============================
  67.  
  68. For the latest information about known issues, see our Web page

  71. - In order to send e-mail to someone who is not in your Address 
  72.   Book, you must enter a recognizable Internet e-mail address (that 
  73.   is, user@server).
  74.  
  75. - The Address Book recognizes a name only if the full name matches. 
  76.   If you type only the first name, Address Book displays a dialog box 
  77.   with a best guess.
  78.  
  79. - If you select a thread and then choose Expand from the View menu, 
  80.   only the first level of the thread is expanded. To expand the 
  81.   whole thread, click the News menu, and then click Options. 
  82.   Click the Read tab, and then select the Auto Expand Conversation 
  83.   Threads check box.
  84.  
  85. - Some mail programs incorrectly send messages with tags indicating
  86.   that they use Western European languages when the messages actually 
  87.   use non-Western European characters. As a result, these messages 
  88.   might appear garbled in Internet Mail and News. To work around this 
  89.   problem, click the View menu, point to Language, and then choose the 
  90.   appropriate language. If you want to reply to or forward such a 
  91.   message, first open the message by clicking File and then clicking 
  92.   Open. Change the language of the message by clicking the View menu, 
  93.   pointing to Language, and then selecting the correct language. Then 
  94.   reply to or forward the message.
  95.  
  96. - Internet News requires that your news server support the XOVER 
  97.   command. If your news server does not support the XOVER command, 
  98.   you will get an error message indicating that XOVER is required in 
  99.   order to retrieve messages in a newsgroup. Support for news servers 
  100.   that don't use the XOVER command will be added in a future release 
  101.   of Internet News.
  102.  
  103. - If you have multiple contacts with identical names (such as "Joe 
  104.   User") in your Address Book, you might have a problem sending 
  105.   a message to the correct recipient. If you type the entire name 
  106.   "Joe User" in the TO: or CC: line, the program searches for and 
  107.   sends the message to the first matching contact. To work around 
  108.   this problem, you can type in a partial name, such as "Joe," and 
  109.   the program will display a list of all matching contacts. Or you 
  110.   can assign each contact a unique name, such as "Joe B. User" or 
  111.   "Joe User (Acme Tools)."
  112.  
  113. - If a group contains the same contact multiple times, sending mail 
  114.   to the group will fail.
  115.  
  116.  
  117. TROUBLESHOOTING
  118. ===============
  119.  
  120. - If you run into a problem, try the troubleshooters in online Help. 
  121.   To start the troubleshooters, carry out the following steps:
  122.  
  123.   1. In Internet Mail or News, click the Help menu.
  124.   2. Look up "Troubleshooting" in the Help Index.
  125.  
  126. - Check your connection to your Internet service provider.
  127.  
  128. - If you are unable to send or receive mail, check the following:
  129.  
  130.   - The TCP/IP protocol is installed on your computer.
  131.   - All cables are properly connected to your computer, modem, 
  132.     or LAN.
  133.   - You have a PPP or SLIP account with your Internet Provider.
  134.   - Your Internet Provider or LAN server supports POP3 and SMTP.
  135.   - Your modem communication parameters (baud rate and type of 
  136.     protocol) are set correctly.
  137.  
  138. - Make sure that you use an account name and password for a news 
  139.   server only if it requires them. If you use an account name and 
  140.   password and they are not required, you will not be able to connect 
  141.   to the news server.
  142.  
  143. - To access the Microsoft peer product support newsgroups, carry 
  144.   out the following steps:
  145.  
  146.   1. Click the News menu, and then click Options.
  147.   2. Click the Server tab, and then click Add.
  148.   3. Type msnews.microsoft.com as the name of the server. 
  149.  
  150.      If that name isn't found by your Internet Service Provider, you 
  151.      can enter 131.107.3.27 instead.
  152.  
  153.   You do not need to enter an account name or password.
  154.  
  155. - If your mail server times out while you are sending mail, you might 
  156.   get an error message indicating that a recipient is unknown. If this 
  157.   happens, you should increase the timeout for your server. To do this, 
  158.   carry out the following steps:
  159.  
  160.   1. Click the Mail menu, and then click Options.
  161.   2. Click the Server tab, and then click Advanced Settings.
  162.   3. Drag the slider to increase the timeout for your server.
  163.  
  164.  
  165. TIPS AND TRICKS
  166. ===============
  167.  
  168. - To rename a folder, create a new folder with the name you want, 
  169.   move the messages you want into the new folder, and then delete 
  170.   the old folder.
  171.  
  172. - You can change the sound that notifies you that you have received 
  173.   new mail. To do this, open Control Panel, and then double-click 
  174.   the Sounds icon.
  175.  
  176. - You can move the toolbar by right-clicking on it and then choosing
  177.   Align/Left or Align/Top. To customize the toolbar, right-click on
  178.   it, and then click Customize Toolbar.
  179.  
  180. - You can resize the preview pane or the message list by dragging the 
  181.   divider between the preview pane and the message list.
  182.  
  183. - You can change how the preview pane splits, or turn it off entirely 
  184.   by changing the options under Preview Pane on the View menu.
  185.  
  186. - You can specify that you want to see only unread News messages. To 
  187.   do this, click the View menu, and then click Unread Messages Only.
  188.  
  189. - You can set messages to automatically download to the preview pane 
  190.   by clicking the News menu, clicking options, clicking the Read tab,
  191.   then selecting the Automatically Show Messages in the Preview Pane
  192.   check box.
  193.  
  194. - To view the e-mail address of someone who has sent you a message, 
  195.   double-click the message to open it, then double-click the author's 
  196.   name in the From field. You can also add this person to your 
  197.   Address Book by right-clicking the name, and then clicking Add To 
  198.   Address Book.
  199.  
  200. - To view responses to a particular message in a newsgroup, click the 
  201.   plus sign (+) next to the message. The responses appear indented 
  202.   below it. 
  203.   
  204. - You should use HTML formatting to send messages only to recipients 
  205.   who have e-mail software that can display HTML. Otherwise, send 
  206.   messages as plain text, which is the default.
  207.  
  208. - In Internet Mail, you can leave a copy of your messages on the 
  209.   server. To set this option, click the Mail menu, and then click 
  210.   Options. Click the Server tab, click Advanced Settings and select
  211.   the Leave a copy of messages on server check box.
  212.  
  213. - In Internet News, you can search for newsgroups that contain 
  214.   several keywords. To do this, click the News menu, and then click 
  215.   Newgroups. In the Search box, enter the keywords separated by a 
  216.   space. You can also search newsgroup descriptions. If you cannot 
  217.   see the descriptions, click the News menu, click Options, and then 
  218.   click the Server tab. Click a news server, click Properties, click 
  219.   the Advanced tab, and then select the Use Newsgroup Descriptions 
  220.   check box.
  221.  
  222. - You can have your signature added to all messages, including those
  223.   that you reply to or forward. To do this, click the Mail menu, and 
  224.   then click Options. On the Signature tab, select the following check 
  225.   box: Add Signature To The End Of All Outgoing Messages.
  226.  
  227. - To switch to your Inbox, you can press CTRL+I.
  228.  
  229. - To reorder columns, you can drag and drop column headings.
  230.  
  231. - To save an attachment with a message from the preview pane, click 
  232.   the paper clip icon, and then hold down the CTRL key while you 
  233.   click the file you want to save. The Save As dialog box appears.
  234.  
  235. - You can view all the headers for a news message. To do this, 
  236.   double-click the message to open it in a separate window, click 
  237.   the View menu, and then click Full Headers.
  238.  
  239. - If you are running Internet Mail and News on Windows NT and you 
  240.   need to add support for a different language, double-click the 
  241.   Keyboard icon in Control Panel, and then click Add. Follow the 
  242.   instructions on your screen. This installs the appropriate NLS 
  243.   (National Language Support) files. You do not have to use the 
  244.   associated keyboard layout.
  245.  
  246. - To send or receive messages in PanEuropean languages, choose 
  247.   between one of these character sets: CE/Baltic/Greek/Turkish (ISO) 
  248.   or CE/Baltic/Greek/Turkish (Windows).
  249.  
  250. - To send or receive messages in Russian, use Cyrillic (Windows). 
  251.   To send messages in other Cyrillic languages (Ukrainian, 
  252.   Belorussian, Bulgarian), you can use either Cyrillic (KOI8-R) 
  253.   or Cyrillic (Windows; however, to reply, you should use the 
  254.   character set that was used in the original message.
  255.  
  256. - If Internet Mail and News is unable to determine the language 
  257.   of an incoming message, the language defaults to the one 
  258.   selected in the Language list. To open the Language list, 
  259.   click the View menu, and then point to Language.

  262. SUPPORT FOR MICROSOFT INTERNET MAIL AND NEWS
  263. ============================================

  265. Support for both the Windows NT and Windows 95 versions of 
  266. Microsoft Internet Mail and News is provided directly by 
  267. Microsoft support engineers through standard phone lines.
  268.  
  269. Phone support from within the United States is available via 
  270. a toll call by dialing the following number between 6:00 A.M. 
  271. and 6:00 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Friday, 
  272. excluding holidays.
  273.  
  274. - In the U.S., call (206) 635-7123 for Internet Mail and News 
  275.   support
  276.  
  277. Phone support is also available for Canadian residents via a 
  278. toll call by dialing the following number between 8:00 A.M. 
  279. and 8:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday, 
  280. excluding holidays.

  282. - In Canada, call (905) 568-4494 for Internet Mail and News 
  283.   support.

  285. For additional information about Microsoft support options,

  288. Internet newsgroup support is also provided indirectly through 
  289. the Microsoft News server. The following two newsgroups are 
  290. dedicated to the discussion of Microsoft Internet Mail and 
  291. News and provide a great deal of support:

  293. - news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internet.mail
  294. - news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internet.news
  295.  
  296. These newsgroups are some of the best places to go if you 
  297. are experiencing a problem with Internet Mail and News, as 
  298. the solution might already be posted by someone else who 
  299. encountered a similar issue.
  300.  
  301. In addition to the news groups mentioned above, there are 
  302. other useful newsgroups that deal with Microsoft products. 
  303. These groups can be found on the following Microsoft News 
  304. server:
