  9. This document provides information you may find useful in running
  10. Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.
  11.  
  12. Additional information about installing and using the Internet 
  13. Explorer is added to the World Wide Web as it becomes available.

  42. INSTALLING PC CARD (PCMCIA) MODEMS

  45. If you are using a PC card (PCMCIA) modem for your Dial-up Networking
  46. connection to the Internet and have not yet installed the modem,
  47. you may have to enable Windows 95 PC card socket support before 
  48. running the Internet Setup wizard.  
  49.  
  50. To enable PCMCIA socket support:
  51.  
  52. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  53.    Control Panel.
  54.  
  55. 2. Double-click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon to start the PC Card 
  56.    Wizard, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  57.  
  58.    NOTE: If you can't find the PC Card icon, you may need to install 
  59.          the PC card (PCMCIA) drivers. To do this, double-click the 
  60.          Add New Hardware icon, click No, click PCMCIA Support from 
  61.          the list of hardware items, and then follow the instructions 
  62.          on your screen.

  65. USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
  66. ============================================
  67.  
  68. If you want to use a proxy or firewall to protect your Local Area 
  69. Network from being accessed by other on the Internet, follow these 
  70. steps:
  71.  
  72. 1. Run the Internet Setup Wizard.
  73.  
  74.    You can run the wizard after by clicking the Start button,
  75.    pointing to Programs, then pointing to Accessories, then
  76.    pointing to Internet Tools, and then double-clicking
  77.    Internet Setup Wizard.
  78.  
  79. 2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using TCP/IP 
  80.    on on your local area network. 
  81.  
  82. 3. When asked for the gateway address, type the address supplied by 
  83.    your network administrator only if your organization uses gateways 
  84.    for routing information over the network.
  85.  
  86.    NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or firewall 
  87.    computer which protects your local area network from the Internet,
  88.    so do not type your proxy or firewall address here.
  89.  
  90. 4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control 
  91.    Panel.
  92.  
  93. 5. Click the Internet icon, and then click the Connection tab.
  94.  
  95. 6. In the "Proxy" portion of the tab, make sure the "Connect to the Internet
  96.    through a proxy server" box is checked.
  97.  
  98. 7. Click the Change Proxy Settings button.
  99.  
  100. 8. In the first textbox, type the HTTP server address for the computer
  101.    you want to use as the proxy server. In the second textbox, type the
  102.    port number. The following is an example of a proxy server and
  103.    port number:
  104.  
  105.    http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
  106.  
  107.    In this example, you would type "http://myproxy.mycompany.com" in
  108.    the first textbox, and "80" in the second textbox.
  109.  
  110.    You can use a different proxy for different types of addresses.
  111.    However, if you wish to use the same proxy for all types of addresses,
  112.    make sure the "Use same proxy server for all addresses" box is checked.
  113.  
  114. 9. In the "Exceptions" portion of the dialog, click in the textbox and type
  115.    the names of the computers, domains, and ports on the Internet that,
  116.    when accessed, will not go through the proxy server. Separate each item
  117.    you type with a semicolon. (If you do not know what to type here,
  118.    see your network administrator.)
  119.  
  120.    To not use the proxy for local addresses, make sure the "Do not use
  121.    proxy for local (intranet) addresses" box is checked. Local addresses
  122.    are defined as those where the server name does not have a period (".")
  123.    in it. For example, "http://internalweb/" is a local address;
  124.    "http://www.microsoft.com/" is not.
  125.  
  126.    For Help on these items, click the ? in the title bar, and then click
  127.    the item. 
  128.  
  129. 10. When done, click OK to close the Proxy Settings dialog.
  130.  
  131. 11. Click OK to close the Internet Control Panel. If you are running
  132.     Internet Explorer, you will need to restart before the new proxy settings
  133.     take effect.

  136. USING PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS' REALAUDIO SUPPORT
  137. =============================================
  138.  
  139. The Microsoft Internet Explorer includes support for Progressive Networks' 
  140. RealAudio. This enables you to listen to audio files in real time over 
  141. a dial-up modem or direct-network Internet connection. To use 
  142. RealAudio, you must have a Windows 95-supported sound card installed 
  143. in your computer. RealAudio works best on 486/33 or faster processors.
  144.  
  145. To try RealAudio, connect to http://www.realaudio.com.
  146.  
  147. NOTE: RealAudio will not work if your connection is routed through 
  148.       a local area network proxy or firewall. 
  149.

  151. USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY
  152. ===========================================
  153.  
  154. Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory. Otherwise, 
  155. Internet Explorer will not run properly. To make sure you are using 
  156. virtual memory:
  157.  
  158. 1. Click the Start button, then point to Settings, and then click 
  159.    Control Panel.
  160.  
  161. 2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
  162.  
  163. 3. Click the Virtual Memory button.
  164.  
  165. 4. If you are specifying your own virtual memory settings, make 
  166.    sure the Disable Virtual Memory box is unchecked. If this box 
  167.    is checked, then you are not using virtual memory and Internet 
  168.    Explorer won't run.
  169.  
  170.    TIP: You can let Windows manage virtual memory for you by 
  171.         selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory 
  172.         Settings option.

  175. USING INTERNET EXPLORER 2.0 ALONG WITH 3.0
  176. ==========================================
  177.  
  178. When you install Internet Explorer 3.0, Internet Explorer 2.0 is
  179. automatically renamed and left in place. Therefore, you can continue
  180. to use Internet Explorer 2.0 alongside 3.0.
  181.  
  182. To use Internet Explorer 2.0, open the folder where you have installed
  183. Internet Explorer 3.0 (usually in C:\Program Files) and double-click the
  184. "Ie20" or "Ie20.EXE" icon. For quicker access to Internet Explorer 2.0,
  185. you may want to drag this icon to your desktop or Start Menu button.

  187. NOTE FOR PROXY USERS: At this time, Internet Explorer 2.0 and 3.0 use the
  188. same proxy settings in the registry. This can cause problems if you are
  189. using separate proxies for different protocols. To change your registry
  190. settings so that IE 2.0 can use the proxy, do the following:
  191.  
  192. 1. Open the Internet Control Panel by opening the Start Menu, pointing at
  193. Settings, clicking Control Panels, and double-clicking the Internet icon.
  194.  
  195. 2. Select "Connection" from the rows of tabs at the top.
  196.  
  197. 3. Click the "Change Proxy Settings" button.
  198.  
  199. 4. Make sure the "Use same proxy server for all types of addresses"
  200. checkbox is checked.
  201.  
  202. 5. Press OK to close the Proxy Settings dialog.
  203.  
  204. 6. Press OK to close the Options dialog.

  207. REVERTING TO INTERNET EXPLORER 2.0
  208. ==================================
  209.  
  210. If you wish to remove Internet Explorer 3.0 and return to using Internet
  211. Explorer 2.0, you currently need to uninstall IE 3.0 and then reinstall IE 2.0.
  212. Instructions:
  213.  
  214. 1. Go to the Internet Explorer home page by opening http://www.microsoft.com
  215. in your browser, clicking the "Microsoft Internet Explorer Free Download"
  216. graphic on the left side of the page.
  217.  
  218. 2. Locate the correct link for downloading IE 2.0. Right-click it and
  219. choose Save Target As.
  220.  
  221. 3. Choose a filename. NOTE: If you are using IE 3.0, you will need to include
  222. the .EXE extension, e.g.: "msie20.exe".
  223.  
  224. 4. Click Save to save the file.
  225.  
  226. 5. Open the Start Menu, point at Settings, click Control Panel, and
  227. double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Uninstall Internet Explorer 3.0
  228. by choosing it from the list and clicking Add/Remove.
  229.  
  230. 6. Close the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
  231.  
  232. 7. Locate where you saved Internet Explorer 2.0 in steps 3-4, and double-click
  233. on the icon to reinstall Internet Explorer 2.0.
