  58. OVERVIEW
  59. ========
  60.  
  61. Microsoft NetMeeting is a set of program and network components 
  62. that enable real-time audio and data communication over the 
  63. Internet. Our vision is of a device that combines the capabilities 
  64. of a telephone with a rich set of data features, such as program 
  65. sharing, file transfer, conference Whiteboard, and conference Chat.    
  66.  
  67. In order to use Microsoft NetMeeting, you must have the following 
  68. configuration:
  69.  
  70. - 486/66 with 8MB of RAM (Pentium with 16MB of RAM recommended)
  71.  
  72. - Microsoft Windows 95
  73.  
  74.   NetMeeting does not run on Windows NT(R) or Windows 3.1(R). 
  75.   This version of NetMeeting runs only on English (United States) 
  76.   versions of Microsoft Windows 95.
  77.  
  78. - Microsoft NetMeeting works best with a fast Internet connection 
  79.   (28.8-baud modem or local area network)
  80.  
  81. - Sound card, speakers, and microphone are required for use of Audio
  82.  
  83. For this beta release, do not run NetMeeting on a computer 
  84. running PictureTel Live50, Live100, Live200, LiveLAN, or LiveShare 
  85. Plus. The final version of NetMeeting will work with these products.
  86.  
  87. This product replaces the PDC alpha release of Microsoft Conferencing
  88. and the Beta 1 release of Microsoft NetMeeting.
  89.  
  90. To Run Microsoft NetMeeting
  91. ---------------------------
  92. 1. After the installation is finished, if a dialog box appears 
  93.    asking if you want to restart your computer, click Yes.
  94.  
  95. 2. Start Microsoft NetMeeting as follows:
  96.  
  97.    - Click the Start button, and then point to Programs.
  98.    - Click Microsoft NetMeeting.
  99.  
  100. 3. When you open Microsoft NetMeeting for the first time, a wizard 
  101.    appears that helps you get ready to use NetMeeting. If you cancel 
  102.    this wizard, NetMeeting will work, but you might get poor audio 
  103.    quality.
  104.  
  105. To Uninstall Microsoft NetMeeting
  106. ---------------------------------
  107. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  108.  
  109. 2. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  110.  
  111. 3. Click Microsoft NetMeeting, and then click Add/Remove.
  112.  
  113. 4. If a  dialog box appears asking if you want to restart 
  114.   your computer, click Yes.
  115.  
  116.  
  117. USING MICROSOFT NETMEETING
  118. ==========================
  119.  
  120. - When you first run Microsoft NetMeeting, a setup wizard prompts 
  121.   you for the name of the User Location Server (ULS) you want to 
  122.   use.  Microsoft maintains a User Location Server on the Internet 
  123.   at uls.microsoft.com.  
  124.  
  125. - Whenever you run Microsoft NetMeeting after you have completed 
  126.   the setup wizard, you are automatically logged on to the ULS you 
  127.   specified. This server maintains a list of the people currently 
  128.   running Microsoft NetMeeting and their IP addresses. You can use 
  129.   this service to locate people to conference with by clicking the 
  130.   directory button, or you can type the person's computer name, 
  131.   IP address, e-mail address, or modem phone number in the Place
  132.   A Call field. 
  133.  
  134. - To use the User Location Server to find people running Microsoft 
  135.   NetMeeting on the Internet:
  136.  
  137.   1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  138.  
  139.   2. Click the Calling tab.
  140.  
  141.   3. Select the User Location Service Name check box, and then 
  142.      type uls.microsoft.com.
  143.  
  144.   NOTE: You will not be able to use uls.microsoft.com to locate 
  145.         people on the Internet if you connect to the Internet 
  146.         through a proxy server. For information about setting up 
  147.         your own User Location Server, see the Microsoft NetMeeting 
  148.         SDK.
  149.  
  150. - Audio works only over TCP/IP between two people. Data conferences 
  151.   can include multiple people and work over TCP/IP, modems, and IPX.
  152.  
  153. - For this release, the maximum recommended conference size is six 
  154.   people.
  155.  
  156. - If you try to make a TCP/IP call and MSN displays a connection 
  157.   dialog box, double-click the Internet icon in Control Panel and 
  158.   make sure that AutoDial is not selected.
  159.  
  160. - Sharing of DirectX, MS-DOS, and graphic-intensive games and AVIs 
  161.   does not work well and is not supported.
  162.  
  163. - If different computers have different screen resolutions during 
  164.   a conference, the shared windows can be as large as the highest 
  165.   resolution desktop allows. Users with lower resolution desktops 
  166.   will have to scroll to view windows that don't fit their screens.
  167.  
  168. - When you share a program, remote users can use the File Open and 
  169.   File Save dialog boxes in your program to access files on your 
  170.   computer or network.
  171.  
  172. - Some software installation programs will not function properly 
  173.   while Microsoft NetMeeting is running.
  174.  
  175. - You must have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack and Windows Sockets interface 
  176.   to run Microsoft NetMeeting. Microsoft NetMeeting has been tested 
  177.   with the 32-bit TCP/IP and Windows sockets built into Windows 95.
  178.  
  179. - If you want to use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to place 
  180.   NetMeeting calls, you must be connected to the ISP before starting
  181.   Microsoft NetMeeting.
  182.  
  183. - Both Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft NetMeeting currently use 
  184.   the same file type (.cnf).
  185.  
  186. - If you want to call someone by using a modem, and you must dial a 9 
  187.   to get an outside line, make sure you type a "-" in front of the 9 at 
  188.   the beginning of the phone number. If you do not, NetMeeting assumes 
  189.   the phone number is the IP address for the remote computer, and tries 
  190.   to connect over the local area network by using the TCP/IP protocol. 
  191.   For example, you might specify the following number:

  193.     -9,7034501
  194.  
  195. - Application sharing, Whiteboard, and Chat may not work properly 
  196.   between computers with different language settings and keyboard 
  197.   layouts.
  198.  
  199.  
  200. PLACING A CALL
  201. ==============
  202.  
  203. You can place Microsoft NetMeeting call to multiple users. Any 
  204. person in a conference can place Microsoft NetMeeting calls to 
  205. other people. In addition, other people can join a Microsoft 
  206. NetMeeting call in progress by calling one of the participants.
  207.  
  208. When you run Microsoft NetMeeting, you are automatically logged 
  209. on to a User Location Server. This server maintains a list of the 
  210. people currently running Microsoft NetMeeting and their IP addresses. 
  211. You can use this service to locate people to conference with by 
  212. choosing Call, then Directory; or you can use the main NetMeeting 
  213. window to type either their computer name or modem phone number.
  214.  
  215. Using Advanced Calling
  216. ----------------------
  217. If Microsoft NetMeeting cannot determine what type of address you 
  218. entered, the Advanced Calling dialog box is displayed. You can then 
  219. specify additional information to help NetMeeting place the call.
  220.  
  221. You can open the Advanced Calling dialog box by clicking the Call 
  222. menu, and then clicking Place Advanced Call.
  223.  
  224. Calling a Conferencing Service Provider
  225. ---------------------------------------
  226. A conferencing service provider supplies a conferencing bridge that 
  227. everyone in a conference can connect to for a data-only conference. 
  228. To use a conferencing service provider, carry out the following 
  229. steps:
  230.  
  231. 1. On the Call menu, click Place Advanced Call.
  232.  
  233. 2. In the Call Using box, click Modem.
  234.  
  235. 3. Type the phone number of the Conferencing Service Provider.
  236.  
  237. 4. Select the Call A Conferencing Service check box.
  238.  
  239. 5. Type the name of the conference you want to join. If you leave 
  240.    this field blank, Microsoft NetMeeting will display a list of 
  241.    public conferences on the conferencing service provider.
  242.  
  243. Warnings and Known Bugs
  244. -----------------------
  245. - Audio calls can be made only over TCP/IP and can include only 
  246.   two people.
  247.  
  248. - If you cannot connect to someone by using their computer name, 
  249.   try using their IP address.
  250.  
  251. - IPX conferences can be run if both nodes in the conference do 
  252.   the following:
  253.  
  254.   - Have Microsoft IPX/SPX-Compatible Protocol installed.
  255.  
  256.   - Call using the Advanced Calling dialog box, choosing the IPX 
  257.     transport and entering into the Address field the full 8:12 
  258.     net number and Ethernet address of the intended recipient of 
  259.     the call--for example, 00002702:112233445566.
  260.  
  261. - NetMeeting does not work over a direct cable connection between 
  262.   computers.
  263.  
  264. - NetMeeting Dialing Shortcuts record only the name and address of 
  265.   the person to call.
  266.  
  267. - Microsoft NetMeeting currently does not work with the Motorola 
  268.   Bitsurfer Pro ISDN modem.
  269.  
  270. - It is not possible to join an audio-only call in progress.
  271.  
  272. - Microsoft NetMeeting cannot place calls using a modem on a computer 
  273.   that has two modems installed.
  274.  
  275.  
  276. RECEIVING A CALL
  277. ================
  278.  
  279. You are ready to receive an incoming call if you are currently
  280. running Microsoft NetMeeting.
  281.  
  282.  
  283. SHARING A PROGRAM
  284. =================
  285.  
  286. Any person in a conference can share a program with the other 
  287. conference participants. When you share a program, other people
  288. can see and use the program.
  289.  
  290. Warnings and Known Bugs
  291. -----------------------
  292. - You cannot share the entire desktop.
  293.  
  294. - Sharing one Windows Explorer window shares all of them. If you 
  295.   run a program while the Windows Explorer is shared, it will also 
  296.   be shared. 
  297.  
  298. - When you share a program and collaborate, remote users can use the 
  299.   File Open and File Save dialog boxes in your program to access or 
  300.   delete files on your computer or network. To stop someone from using
  301.   your shared program while you do not have control of the cursor, 
  302.   press ESC. To stop someone from using your shared program while you 
  303.   do have control of the cursor, click the Work Alone button.

  305.  
  306. WHITEBOARD
  307. ==========
  308.  
  309. The Whiteboard enables you to draw simultaneously with other users. 
  310. Everyone in the conference can see what is drawn on the Whiteboard. 
  311. When one person in a conference runs Whiteboard, it appears on 
  312. everyone's screen.
  313.  
  314.  
  315. CHAT
  316. ====
  317.  
  318. Chat enables you to type messages for other users to see. When one 
  319. person in a conference runs Chat, it appears on everyone's screen.
  320.  
  321.  
  322. FILE TRANSFER
  323. =============
  324.  
  325. Files dragged onto the listing of people in the conference will be 
  326. sent to all the people in the conference. To send a file to a 
  327. particular user, drag the file onto their icon in the list of people
  328. in the conference. To send a file to everyone in the conference, 
  329. click the Tools menu, and then click Send File.
  330.  
  331. Warnings and Known Bugs
  332. -----------------------
  333. - Received files show up in the Windows Explorer before they are 
  334.   successfully received.
  335.  
  336. - If you try to send a shortcut to a file, the shortcut will be 
  337.   resolved and the file will be sent instead.
  338.  
  339. - If you hang up while file transfer is in progress, file transfer 
  340.   will not complete successfully.
  341.  
  342.  
  343. AUDIO COMMUNICATION
  344. ===================
  345.  
  346. By default, audio communication is enabled for TCP/IP calls. To 
  347. place an audio-only or data-only call, you must open the Advanced 
  348. Calling dialog box, select TCP/IP as your transport, and choose the 
  349. appropriate option.  
  350.  
  351. Audio is supported only over TCP/IP and between no more than two 
  352. people.
  353.  
  354. Sound quality can vary significantly depending on your sound card 
  355. and microphone. Use the Audio Tuning Wizard to automatically adjust 
  356. your settings.
  357.  
  358.  
  359. Warnings and Known Bugs
  360. -----------------------
  361. - Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE might disconnect the audio connection.
  362.  
  363. - If you join a conference, or call a person who has selected 
  364.   Conference Host in the Call menu, you will not be able to use
  365.   the audio features in your conference.
  366.  
  367. - The Audio Tuning Wizard works only when you are not on a call.
  368.  
  369. - If you are experiencing choppy full-duplex sound quality, try 
  370.   switching Microsoft NetMeeting to half-duplex sound quality. 
  371.   To do this, carry out the following steps:
  372.  
  373.   1. Make sure that you are not on a NetMeeting call.
  374.  
  375.   2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Options.
  376.  
  377.   3. Click the Audio tab.
  378.  
  379.   4. Clear the Enable Full Duplex Audio check box.

  381.  
  382. HANGING UP
  383. ==========
  384.  
  385. When you hang up, you will disconnect anyone you have called or 
  386. anyone who called you. If the disconnected users have invited or 
  387. accepted other users into the conference, they will also be 
  388. disconnected.

  390.  
  391. KNOWN ISSUES
  392. ============
  393.  
  394. - You cannot run ReachOut 5.0 on computers where Microsoft NetMeeting 
  395.   is installed.
  396.  
  397. - To find the name of your NetBIOS, carry out the following steps:
  398.  
  399.   1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.
  400.   2. Click the Identification tab. The Computer Name is displayed.
