  58. Windows Driver Library (WDL)
  59. ----------------------------
  60. Windows 95 includes drivers for most display adapters. To obtain
  61. additional or updated drivers, carry out the following procedure.
  62.  
  63. 1. If do not have access to a modem, obtain a floppy disk that
  64.    contains the driver by calling Microsoft Product Support Services.
  65.    Then proceed to step 4.
  66.   
  67.    If you have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, some are available in the 
  68.    \Drivers\Display folder. If the driver you need is in that folder, 
  69.    proceed to step 4.
  70.  
  71. 2. If you have a modem, download the driver to a floppy disk from one
  72.    of the following online services.  
  73.

  86. 3. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, double-click the icon for
  87.    the floppy disk drive that contains the file you downloaded,
  88.    and then double-click the file itself. This extracts the driver.
  89.  
  90. 4. Using your right mouse button, click the Windows 95 desktop, and
  91.    then click Properties.
  92.  
  93. 5. Click the Settings tab, and then click Change Display Type.
  94.  
  95. 6. In the Adapter Type area, click Change, and then click Have Disk.
  96.  
  97. 7. Click Browse, and then locate the file you extracted in step 3. If you
  98.    have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, locate the driver on the CD-ROM.
  99.  
  100. 8. Click OK in the Open dialog box and in the Install From Disk dialog
  101.    box.
  102.  
  103. NOTE: The drivers are available at no charge; however, standard
  104. connect-time fees and long-distance telephone charges, if any, apply.
  105.  
  106. Adapter Type
  107. ------------
  108. Windows 95 Setup configures your adapter type based on the type of
  109. controller it uses; for example, S3, Cirrus Logic, or ATI. However,
  110. you may find a more exact match for your adapter make and model in
  111. Display properties. To change your adapter type, open Display
  112. properties, click the Settings tab, and then click Change Display
  113. Type. In the Adapter Type area, click Change. 
  114.  
  115. In most cases, selecting a more precise adapter type does not change
  116. the driver or its behavior in any way.
  117.  
  118. Monitor Type
  119. ------------
  120. If Windows 95 does not contain your exact monitor type, select one
  121. of the standard display types instead. This will not adversely affect
  122. the performance or quality of Windows 95 display output.
  123.  
  124. Refresh Rates
  125. -------------
  126. Selecting your monitor type in Windows 95 Display properties does not
  127. affect the refresh rate used by your display adapter. To adjust the
  128. refresh rate, you must specify your monitor type in the adapter setup
  129. program supplied by your display adapter or PC manufacturer. Some
  130. utilities must be included in your Autoexec.bat file. On some PCs,
  131. monitor type is set in BIOS configuration programs. Examples of
  132. utilities from adapter manufacturers include:
  133.  
  134.   ATI                   Install.exe
  135.   Cirrus Logic          Montype.exe, Clmode.exe
  136.   Diamond Stealth       Stlmode.exe
  137.   Diamond Stealth 64    S64mode.exe, go95.exe
  138.   Matrox                \Mga\Setup\Setup.exe
  139.   Tseng Labs            Vmode.exe
  140.   Western Digital       Vgamode.exe
  141.  
  142. You may be able to obtain updated drivers that set the refresh rate
  143. based on the selected monitor type from adapter vendors or from the
  144. Windows Driver Library. 
  145.  
  146. Correcting Display Problems
  147. ---------------------------
  148. In general, you can correct many display-related problems by clicking
  149. the Graphics button on the Performance tab in System properties. Drag 
  150. the slider in this dialog box and experiment with different settings 
  151. before you revert to 640x480 16-color mode to work around a problem.  
  152.  
  153. In particular, if you have problems with "see through" dialogs, or
  154. if graphic elements remain on your screen after you close a menu or 
  155. dialog box, move the slider down one notch to "Most accelerator 
  156. functions". This symptom can occur even on non-accelerated adapters.
  157.  
  158. NOTE: Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is not compatible with the "None"
  159. setting in this dialog box. If Windows does not start due to this
  160. problem, restart Windows, and then press F8 when "Starting Windows 95"
  161. appears on your screen. Press 3 to start Windows in Safe Mode. Then
  162. change graphics acceleration to a different setting.
  163.  
  164. Dynamic Color Change
  165. --------------------
  166. Most programs have no problem when you dynamically change color depth; 
  167. however, some programs may not display colors or other elements 
  168. correctly after a color change. To avoid this problem, change color 
  169. depth before starting the program. If you change color depth while a 
  170. program is running, you may need to restart the program to make sure 
  171. the changed setting works properly.
  172.  
  173. Color Cursors
  174. -------------
  175. Color cursors require a Windows 95 display driver running at 256 or
  176. more colors. They are not supported for ATI mach8 display adapters. 
  177.  
  178. If Windows 95 is not using 32-bit disk access, cursors will not
  179. animate. You can check this setting in System properties on the
  180. Performance tab.
  181.  
  182. PCI Display Adapters
  183. --------------------
  184. Your screen resolution may revert to 640x480 when Setup starts
  185. Windows 95 for the first time. Resolution should return to your usual
  186. settings in subsequent sessions.
  187.  
  188. IRQ Conflicts with PCI Display Adapters
  189. ---------------------------------------
  190. If your PCI display adapter is configured by your BIOS to use IRQ 15 
  191. and a functioning secondary PCI IDE disk controller is also configured 
  192. to use IRQ 15 (by default), Windows 95 assigns IRQ 15 to the IDE disk 
  193. controller. This forces your display adapter to use VGA mode. 
  194.  
  195. To load the accelerated Windows 95 driver for your display adapter, 
  196. you must eliminate the resource conflict. One of the following methods
  197. should work for you:
  198.  
  199. - Obtain a BIOS upgrade from your hardware vendor. 
  200. - If your BIOS supports it, disable the secondary PCI IDE controller 
  201.   in the BIOS and on the Device Manager tab in System properties.
  202. - If your BIOS supports it, disable the IRQ of the display adapter.
  203. - If your BIOS supports it, manually reconfigure the display adapter 
  204.   to use a different IRQ setting.
  205.  
  206. Avance Logic Display Adapters
  207. -----------------------------
  208. A Windows 95 driver for Avance Logic 2301 adapters (for example, the
  209. Hercules Stingray adapter) is available on the Windows 95 CD-ROM in 
  210. the \Drivers\Display\Advance folder. 
  211.  
  212. The driver is also available in the Windows Driver Library. For more 
  213. information, see the Windows Driver Library section earlier in this 
  214. file. 
  215.  
  216. Diamond Stealth and SpeedStar 64/Pro
  217. ------------------------------------
  218. If you have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, enhanced drivers for these adapters 
  219. are available in the \Drivers\Display\Diamond folder. These enhanced 
  220. drivers enable you to set refresh rate based on the monitor type selected 
  221. in Display properties. For more information about how to install these 
  222. drivers, see the Readme.txt file. 
  223.  
  224. These drivers are also available in the Windows Driver Library. For more 
  225. information, see the Windows Driver Library section earlier in this file.
  226.  
  227. Diamond Viper
  228. -------------
  229. Windows 95 does not have a built-in driver for Diamond Viper adapters.
  230. However, if you install Windows 95 in the directory that contains your 
  231. Windows 3.x files, Setup will preserve and use the drivers that are
  232. already there. If you install Windows 95 in a different directory,
  233. Setup will install the VGA driver.
  234.  
  235. If you have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, a Windows 95 driver for Diamond 
  236. Viper VLB and PCI adapters (Weitek P9000 based) is available in the 
  237. \Drivers\Display\Diamond folder. For more information about how to 
  238. install these drivers, see the Readme.txt file. 
  239.  
  240. These drivers are also available in the Windows Driver Library. For more 
  241. information, see the Windows Driver Library section earlier in this file.
  242.  
  243. S3 Display Adapters
  244. -------------------
  245. S3 adapters conflict with COM4 ports and modems. If you have modem
  246. problems using this configuration, change your modem to a different
  247. COM port. Or open System properties in Control Panel, click the Performance 
  248. tab, click Graphics, and then drag the slider to None.
  249.  
  250. You can correct certain S3 display problems by adding one of the
  251. following lines to the [Display] section of your System.ini file,
  252. which is located in the folder that contains your Windows 95 files.
  253.   
  254. For problems with line and shape outline appearance, add:  
  255.   Polygon=0       
  256.  
  257. For color problems with "High Color (16 bit)," add:                  
  258.   HighColor=15
  259.  
  260. For color problems with "True Color (24 bit)," add:                  
  261.   TrueColor=24
  262.  
  263. NOTE: The Windows 95 S3 driver supports 24-bit mode only at a resolution
  264. of 640 x 480.
  265.  
  266. ATI Mach8/32/64
  267. ---------------
  268. Windows 95 cannot use high-resolution modes properly unless your
  269. adapter is configured correctly using the ATI Install.exe program.  
  270.  
  271. Choosing the correct setting for your monitor type is especially
  272. important. Otherwise, high-resolution modes may not be available,
  273. or your computer may stop responding when it attempts to switch to 
  274. them.
  275.  
  276. If your computer occasionally stops responding on PCI mach32 or mach64 
  277. adapters, try adding the line "outengine=0" to the [display] section
  278. of your System.ini file. The file is located in the folder that contains
  279. your Windows 95 files. If this does not work, try adding "VAD=1" in the
  280. same location.  This switch disables linear framebuffer mode, which
  281. can cause problems on some computers.
  282.  
  283. Number Nine Imagine 128
  284. -----------------------
  285. A driver for this adapter is available from the Windows Driver Library. 
  286. Windows 95 will install and use the Cirrus Logic driver for these
  287. adapters by default--limiting the maximum display settings to 800x600,
  288. 256 colors. For more information, see the Windows Driver Library section 
  289. earlier in this file.
  290.  
  291. Hercules Graphite, Boca Vortek, Orchid Celsius (IIT AGX)
  292. --------------------------------------------------------
  293. The Windows 95 Setup program does not automatically install the driver
  294. for these adapters and other adapters that use the IIT AGX controller.
  295. To manually change to the correct display type, open Display properties
  296. in Control Panel, click the Settings tab, and then click Change Display Type.
  297.  
  298. This will install the correct driver files, and enable you to select 
  299. 256-color, 16-bit color, and high-resolution modes.
  300.  
  301. Chips and Technologies
  302. --------------------
  303. This driver is not installed by default on some laptop computers,
  304. including the Zenith 433. To manually install the correct driver, open
  305. Display properties in Control Panel, click the Settings tab, and then 
  306. click Change Display Type.
  307.  
  308. IBM ThinkPad
  309. ------------
  310. To run resolutions above 640x480, you must configure your ThinkPad
  311. correctly. Check the ThinkPad utilities supplied by IBM; these are
  312. usually located on the Start menu. 
  313.  
  314. Some older ThinkPad models require that the Ibmvesa.com driver be
  315. loaded by your Autoexec.bat file during startup for 256-color modes
  316. to work.
  317.  
  318. If you have a ThinkPad 755cx, open Display properties, click the
  319. Settings tab, and then click Change Display Type. Change your display
  320. type from "Western Digital" to "IBM ThinkPad 755cx." This will allow
  321. the built-in panel to display 800x600 modes and may correct some
  322. cursor-related problems.
  323.  
  324. Matrox MGA
  325. ----------
  326. For proper operation, your adapter and monitor settings must be
  327. correct in the Matrox setup utility, which is usually located on
  328. your hard disk in the \Mga\Setup folder. If your computer stops
  329. responding during startup, it may be caused by a conflict with a
  330. network adapter.
  331.  
  332. If you encounter text problems--for example, incorrect or "garbage" 
  333. characters--try adding "FontCache=OFF" to the [mga.drv] section of 
  334. your System.ini file, which is located in the folder that contains 
  335. your Windows 95 files. 
  336.  
  337. Trident Display Adapters
  338. ------------------------
  339. If you have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, an enhanced driver for Trident Super 
  340. VGA and accelerator adapters is available in the \Drivers\Display\Trident 
  341. folder.
  342.  
  343. This driver is also available in the Windows Driver Library. For more 
  344. information, see the Windows Driver Library section earlier in this file.
  345.  
  346. Video Logic 928Movie
  347. --------------------
  348. For 16-bit color modes to work correctly, make sure your display
  349. adapter type is set to "Video Logic 928Movie" in Display properties.
  350.  
  351. Western Digital
  352. ---------------
  353. On some laptop computers, the mouse pointer may change to a wide band
  354. of colored dots when you switch from a command prompt or MS-DOS-based
  355. program. To correct this problem, carry out the following procedure.
  356.  
  357. 1. Click the Start button, and then point to Settings.
  358. 2. Click Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon.
  359. 3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
  360. 4. Drag the slider to the left one notch.
  361.  
  362. SPEA Adapters
  363. -------------
  364. On some SPEA adapters that use an S3 controller, your Autoexec.bat
  365. file must load a VESA TSR (for example, V7mepvbe.exe) for the
  366. Windows 95 S3 driver to work.
  367.  
  368. Appian Renegade
  369. ---------------
  370. Windows 95 Setup installs the VGA driver for this adapter. You can
  371. use Windows 3.1 Renegade drivers with Windows 95, but you must turn
  372. off the Device Bitmaps option so the drivers will operate properly.
  373.  
  374. Compaq Presario with Cirrus Logic
  375. ---------------------------------
  376. If your Compaq Presario uses the Windows 95 Cirrus Logic driver and 
  377. is unable to use screen resolutions higher than 640x480, check your 
  378. Autoexec.bat file for a line similar to the following:
  379.  
  380. c:\windows\vgautil\clmode.exe t640=60 t800=0 t1024=0 t1280=0
  381.  
  382. This line indicates that 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024 resolutions 
  383. are disabled because their refresh rates are set to 0. Only 640x480, 
  384. 60 Hz is enabled. If your monitor supports higher resolutions, carry 
  385. out the following procedure (do not modify your Autoexec.bat file 
  386. directly).
  387.  
  388. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Shut Down.
  389. 2. Click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes.
  390. 3. When the text "Starting Windows 95" appears, press and release 
  391.    the F8 key.
  392. 4. Select Command Prompt Only, and then press ENTER.
  393. 5. At the command prompt, type the following:
  394.  
  395.     c:\windows\vgautil\clmode
  396.  
  397. 6. Use the Clmode program to configure your monitor type appropriately.
  398. 7. Quit the Clmode program, and then restart your computer.
