  16. SETUP
  17. =====
  18.  - MAKE A NEW STARTUP DISK!  Because of changes in the real-mode
  19.    and protect mode kernels to support FAT32, Windows 95 build
  20.    950 startup disks are not compatible with OSR2 startup disks
  21.    and vice-versa. Therefore, when setting up OSR2 for the first
  22.    time, be sure to make a new startup disk - PLEASE DO THIS
  23.    EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT PLANNING TO USE FAT32.
  24.  
  25.  - You should back up your core configuration files and registry 
  26.    using the ERU and CFGBACK utilities on the CD ROM before installing.  
  27.    These can be found in the \other\misc\eru and \other\misc\cfgback 
  28.    directory.  Just run eru.exe and cfgback.exe and follow the instructions.
  29.  
  30.  - If you receive any version conflict dialogs during Setup, you
  31.    should answer "No to All" to ensure that the OSR2 
  32.    version of all files is installed.
  33.     
  34.  - If you have Diamond Video "In Control" utility in your startup group,
  35.    you will get a message:
  36.        "Some Control Panel or device settings have changed since you 
  37.         last started Windows.  Close all of your programs, restart Windows, 
  38.         and then run Setup again."  
  39.    These utilities are installed by some Diamond Stealth display 
  40.    adapter drivers.  Remove them from the startup group before running
  41.    setup.
  42.  
  43.  - If you have the Number Nine Imagine 128 Display Adapter, you will
  44.    probably have to either setup from MS-DOS or change your display
  45.    driver to VGA to prevent setup from hanging.  There is a new I128
  46.    driver in OSR-2.  You should only use that driver with OSR-2 for now.
  47.  
  48.  - If you format your hard disk, you will need a boot floppy with
  49.    real-mode CD-ROM drivers for your interface card and drive.
  50.    These drivers are custom for each device.  Microsoft does not
  51.    supply real-mode CDROM drivers, you must contact your vendor
  52.    if you do not have these drivers.  Setup works best if you
  53.    FDISK and format your hard disk, and then put the system
  54.    files, and autoexec.bat, config.sys and your real-mode CD-ROM
  55.    drivers on your hard disk. Otherwise, you will need to edit
  56.    the template files on the CD in \betaonly\bootflop and use the
  57.    DRVCOPY.INF to propagate these drivers to your hard disk
  58.    during setup.
  59.  
  60.    For more information about how to setup on to a empty hard
  61.    disk, see the APPNOTES.DOC file.
  62.  
  63.  - If you have a Compaq LTE 5xxx portable, Setup or Installing
  64.    New Hardware may hang during Hardware Detection when the
  65.    machine is docked.  If this happens, just restart the machine
  66.    and let Setup   Safe Recovery continue.  It will skip over the
  67.    detection code that hangs, and complete setup normally.  This
  68.    is due to the way the BIOS works on this machine.  
  69.  
  70.  - Time zone setting: the applet for setting your time zone no
  71.    longer displays the time zone when you click on the map.  This
  72.    feature has been explicitly disabled, so please do not report
  73.    bugs on it.
  74.  
  75.  
  76. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT COMPRESSION AND FAT32:  OSR2 will not
  77. mount DriveSpace Compressed Volume Files (CVFs) from
  78. FAT32 host drives.  
  79.  
  80. Dual Boot and FAT32
  81. ===================
  82. You cannot use FAT32 on a machine that you need to dual-boot to
  83. another operating system, including the original release of
  84. Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 3.1 or MS-DOS 6.x.  Other
  85. operating systems are unable to access a FAT32 partition.  You
  86. CAN dual boot to Windows NT if drive C: is FAT16, but if you
  87. have other partitions that are FAT32, they will not be visible
  88. to other operating systems.

  90. There is a "bootdisk" utility available in for download that can
  91. restore Dual Boot to Old MS-DOS for beta testers, but this will
  92. not ship in the final OSR-2 product.
  93.  
  94.  
  95. FAT32 and Disk Free Space
  96. =========================
  97. Most applications will be unable to display free or total disk
  98. space over 2GB, even on larger FAT32 drives.  OSR2 provides new
  99. DOS and Win32 APIs that applications can utilize to determine
  100. free or total disk space over 2GB.  
  101.  
  102.  
  103. FAT32 Converter
  104. ===============
  105. The FAT32 converter in the \betaonly directory is only a beta test
  106. tool.  It will not be part of the final product.
  107.  
  108. After running the FAT32 converter, Defrag will run on that drive
  109. during your next boot.  Defragmenting your drive may take several
  110. hours after it has been converted.  You CAN stop the defragmenter
  111. and run it at another time, but your system performance may be
  112. degraded until you allow the defragmenter to complete on this
  113. drive.
  114.  
  115. For drives that are ONLY supported under Windows (drives that are
  116. not supported by your BIOS nor a DOS device driver), you can
  117. convert them under Windows if you run CVT.EXE with the /w command
  118. line switch, e.g.: CVT D: /w
  119.  
  120.  
  121. SAFE MODE
  122. =========
  123. Running in Safe Mode may be considerably slower on FAT32 drives.
  124.  
  125.  
  126. Modem Detection may start AutoRun CDs
  127. =====================================
  128. On some systems, running Modem detection may start the CD Autorun
  129. application.
  130.  
  131.  
  132. PCCard Modem Power Management: Modem Not Found or Not Ready
  133. ===========================================================
  134. Some PC Card modems require an extra delay when PC Card Power
  135. Management is enabled, before they are ready.  If you encounter this
  136. with your PC Card modem, the symptoms are that it may not work
  137. when you try to use it, and then works if you try again right away.
  138.  
  139. To increase the delay, you need to add a registry key using Regedit:
  140.  
  141.   1.  \HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem
  142.   2.  Go to the key for the modem that you are trying to use, and add
  143.       a key in the root of the modem key.
  144.   3.  Edit / New, create a "DWord" named "ConfigDelay" (no quotes)
  145.   4.  Set the value equal to "3000" for a 3 second delay.  
  146.  
  147. Please submit a bug with the delay necessary for your modem, and your 
  148. computer manufacturer and model information, and we will add this to 
  149. our list.
  150.

  152. INTERLNK
  153. ========
  154. The InterLnk networking product contained in MS-DOS 6.x will not
  155. function properly in MS-DOS mode if you are using FAT32.

  158. INTERNET CONNECTION WIZARD
  159. ==========================
  160.  
  161.  
  162.  
  163. Dialing Properties (Dialing Rules)
  164. ==================================
  165. This release of OEM SR2 includes updated dialing rules for local, 
  166. long distance, and international calls in several countries. 
  167. These updates are to fix problems that existed in the original
  168. release of Windows 95, and to implement new dialing rules for 
  169. countries that have changed their dialing rules since the original 
  170. release of Windows 95. During Setup, the updated rules will be 
  171. automatically inserted in a "[CountryOverrides]" section of the 
  172. TELEPHON.INI file in the WINDOWS directory of the target system.
  173.  
  174. The update includes dialing rule changes for France, Finland, and 
  175. Colombia. However, the new dialing procedures have not yet actually 
  176. gone into affect in these countries (the Colombia change is in 
  177. September 1996, and France and Finland in October 1996). The changes 
  178. are included now in anticipation of these future changes, because 
  179. by the time the systems preloaded with OEM SR2 reach store shelves 
  180. in these countries, the changes will have gone into effect. If you 
  181. will be testing OEM SR2 in France, Finland, or Colombia before the 
  182. new dialing procedures are effective, you will need to use Notepad 
  183. (or another text editor) to modify the "[CountryOverrides]" section 
  184. of TELEPHON.INI. First copy the TELEPHON.INI file (for example, to 
  185. "TELEPHON.SAV"). Then edit the file, and remove the line in the file 
  186. corresponding to the country for which you want to revert to the 
  187. existing dialing procedures (for example, delete the entire line that 
  188. starts with "Country33=" to revert to the current rules for France). 
  189. Save the file, restart all telephony applications (or simply reboot 
  190. your system), and the original (current) rules will be used.

  193. Ontrack Systems Disk Manager
  194. ============================
  195. If you use Ontrack Systems' Disk Manager product on a system that
  196. is booting from a FAT32 drive, it may result in a long pause at
  197. boot time and/or that the drive will be set to run in
  198. compatibility mode.  With version 7.0x, you can Use the /L=0
  199. option with Disk Manager to avoid this pause.  If you are running
  200. an earlier version of Disk Manager, you should update to version
  201. 7.04 and use the /L=0 switch if you use FAT32.

  204. Syquest SQATDRV.SYS and SQDRIVER.SYS Drivers
  205. ============================================
  206. The SQATDRV.SYS driver may cause systems containing FAT32 drives
  207. to hang during boot.  Remove this driver from the CONFIG.SYS file
  208. if you are using FAT32 drives on a system with this device driver.
  209. Versions of these drivers that are compatible with FAT32 boot
  210. drives will be added to the Windows Driver Library (on the Windows
  211. CD and downloadable from the Internet) shortly.

  214. CardBus Controller Support
  215. ==========================
  216. Previous test releases of OSR-2 contained special work-around
  217. code to enable hardware development vendors to test and use
  218. pre-production PC Card controllers.  This temporary code has
  219. been removed, so only production level hardware is now supported.
  220.  
  221.  
  222. Setting up English OSR2 over localized or Pan-Euro Windows 95
  223. =============================================================
  224. This is not supported.  You can not update a non-English version
  225. of Windows 95 to English OSR-2. You must do a clean install of
  226. OSR2.  This is the same as Windows 95 - you can convert FROM
  227. English to other Western European versions of Windows 95, but
  228. you cannot convert them to English.
  229.  
  230. Using COMSPEC variables pointing to Network comand.com files
  231. ============================================================
  232. If you are on a network and are currently mapping 
  233. your compspec to remote network file servers, you may get 
  234. "incorrect DOS version" errors (and an explanation of the version 
  235. shipping with OSR-2 being an updated ver 7.1 etc.).  You need to 
  236. map the comspec to the local copy or to a compatible version
  237. on the network.
  238.  
  239. Error using data acesss from Microsoft Office Standard for
  240. Windows 95 version 7.0
  241. ===========================================================
  242. If you install Microsoft Office Standard for Windows 95 
  243. version 7.0 onto a machine running Windows 95 OSR-2, you will 
  244. receive an error stating "Failure to load expression service" 
  245. when using the Access ODBC driver from Office apps such as Excel 
  246. or Word.  
  247.  
  248. To correct this problem you need to obtain the Microsoft Office 
  249. for Windows 95 version 7.0b release from Microsoft Product Support.  
  250. You can obtain a copy of Microsoft Office for Windows 95 version 7.0b 
  251. by calling the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561. If you are 
  252. outside of the United States, contact the Microsoft Subsidiary in your 
  253. area. To locate your subsidiary call the Microsoft International Sales 
  254. Information Center at 206-936-8661.

  257. Online Services folder shows up as "Online~1"
  258. =============================================
  259. If you have user profiles enabled when you install OSR-2, the
  260. Online Services folder will appear in the individual user's 
  261. desktops as "Online~1".  This is because the 1st boot where
  262. the short file name is converted to the long file name runs in 
  263. the default user name desktop, not the individual desktops.
  264.

  266. Installing Win32 SDK Debug Components from MSDN CD
  267. ==================================================
  268. The MSDN components are from Build 950 and will not work properly
  269. with some of the OSR-2 components.  Installing the SDK or DDK debug
  270. components will render your system unusable and you will have to 
  271. reinstall OSR-2.

  273. Installing Internet Explorer 2.0
  274. ================================
  275. If you reinstall an older version of Internet Explorer 2.0,
  276. your Internet Connection Wizard will no longer function, and
  277. you will have to manually configure the IE properties and dialing
  278. connections.
  279.

  281. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  282. =========================
  283. The following applications may not install or function properly
  284. with OEM Service Release 2.  Please promptly submit bug reports
  285. via MSREPORT if you discover any additional application
  286. incompatibilities introduced by OEM Service Release 2.
  287.  
  288. Disk Utilities
  289. --------------
  290. In general, disk utilities that perform low-level disk functions,
  291. such as defragmenters, disk repair tools and disk compression
  292. utilities, will not function properly on FAT32 drives.  These
  293. utilities should continue to work properly on OEM Service Release
  294. 2 on FAT16 drives.  The disk utilities included with Windows 95
  295. (ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter) have already been modified and
  296. fully support FAT32.   A version of DriveSpace 3 is included with 
  297. OEM SR2 that handles drives up to 2 gig, but it will not compress
  298. on a FAT32 volume.

  301. Norton Utilities/Anti-Virus/Navigator for Windows 95
  302. ----------------------------------------------------
  303. Many of the utilities contained in these products will not
  304. function properly on FAT32 drives.  In some cases, (e.g. Norton
  305. Disk Doctor), they will not function properly on FAT16 drives
  306. under OSR2.  If you use the existing versions of these products
  307. on OSR2, in many cases warning dialogs will be displayed
  308. indicating that you should obtain an updated version of the
  309. program from Symantec.  Please submit bugs if you find cases
  310. where these dialogs are being displayed when they shouldn't be,
  311. or if you encounter problems for which no warning dialog is
  312. displayed.
  313.  
  314. Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95
  315. ------------------------------
  316. If you install Microsoft Plus! on top of OEM Service Release 2,
  317. it will not install any DriveSpace 3 components.  DriveSpace 3,
  318. including Compression Agent, will be enabled when you install Plus!.
  319.  
  320. IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you compressed your hard disk with Microsoft
  321. Plus! and then upgraded to OSR2, if you need to re-install
  322. Microsoft Plus!, do NOT use the Re-Install All option in
  323. Microsoft Plus! setup.  If you need to re-install Microsoft
  324. Plus! and your disk is compressed, you must delete your Setup.STF
  325. file (which should be in your \Program Files\Plus!\Setup folder)
  326. and then re-run Plus! setup.
  327.  
  328. SHARE.EXE no longer works in MS-DOS mode
  329. ----------------------------------------
  330. In order to support FAT32, SHARE support has been disabled in the
  331. real-mode MS-DOS kernel (sharing support is still provided under
  332. Windows 95 however).  If you use applications that require SHARE
  333. support in MS-DOS mode, please submit bug reports about them.

  335. Adobe Photoshop 3.0.4
  336. ---------------------
  337. If you have more than 2GB of free space on your boot drive,
  338. Photoshop may be unable to run.  You may be able to workaround
  339. this by setting a large *maximum* size for your swap file.
  340.  
  341. Windows 95 Service Pack 1 
  342. --------------------------
  343. The Windows 95 Service Pack #1 and its compontents will not
  344. properly install or run on OEM Service Release 2.  All of the
  345. fixes in Service Pack 1 have been included in Service Release 2.
  346.  
  347. Microsoft Exchange Server - Client 
  348. ----------------------------------
  349. If you are running the Microsoft Exchange Server Client (if your
  350. mail system is based on Microsoft Exchange), when you install or
  351. reinstall Windows 95 (either the original edition or the OEM
  352. service releases), and select MSN or Exchange, you will need to
  353. reinstall the Exchange and Schedule+ software from your corporate
  354. server distribution location. If you do not do this, the advanced
  355. Tools menus in Exchange, and the Schedule+ functionality will no
  356. longer work.

  358. Dunce 2.02
  359. ----------
  360. If you are using the shareware utility Dunce 2.02, it will not
  361. work correctly with OEM Service Release 2.  Version 2.03 is now
  362. available which will work with OSR-2.
