  1.                         PC-FORMS SYSTEM INSTALLATION
  2.                                 INSTRUCTIONS
  3.       
  4.       These instructions concerning the installation and use of the PC-
  5.       FORMS  Document Assembly System programs are provided  to  assist 
  6.       you  in the installation of the system.  If you are not  able  to 
  7.       get the programs running properly do not hestitate to call us  at 
  8.       (405)  840-3563 or leave a message on Compuserve to  Bill  Black-
  9.       ledge 70162,1130.  If they are not installed properly you will be 
  10.       unable  to get the full benefit of their use in your business  or 
  11.       practice.

  13.                        COMPUSERVE ON-LINE REGISTRATION
  14.       
  15.       The  PCFORMS system is in the Shareware Registration database  of 
  16.       Compuserve with Registration ID 720.  When you decide to register 
  17.       it  for continued use you may do so through the Compuserve  SWREG 
  18.       Forum  (GO  CIS:SWREG).  The registration fee of $99.95  will  be 
  19.       added to your Compuserve Account.
  20.       
  21.                               ALTERNATIVE WAYS 
  22.                       OF INSTALLING THE PC-FORMS SYSTEM
  23.       
  24.       There are a number of different ways in which the PC-FORMS system 
  25.       may  be  installed.  The instructions for installation  are  con-
  26.       tained in the following paragraphs for your assistance.
  27.       
  28.       
  29.                           FIRST INSTALLATION METHOD
  30.       
  31.       The  easiest  way  to install the PC-FORMS system is  to  make  a 
  32.       directory  for it (such as C:\PCFORMS) and copy all of the  files 
  33.       on  the  PC-FORMS disks to it.  Then you can start  the  PC-FORMS 
  34.       program  by entering PCFM, choose the LEARN library, and use  the 
  35.       Setup  System  Menu  to choose screen colors, to  set  the  value 
  36.       billing  rate  and to link the system with your  word  processor.  
  37.       You will then save your selections in a configuration file  which 
  38.       the system will use each time it is started.

  41.                          SECOND INSTALLATION METHOD
  42.       
  43.       A  second method is to use the automatic linking feature  of  the 
  44.       system  by loading the programs and related files into your  word 
  45.       processing  program directory and the text libraries  into  their 
  46.       own  directory  or directories.  If you want the system  to  link 
  47.       with  your  word  processor, this method will  require  that  you 
  48.       include  your  word processing directory in the PATH  command  in 
  49.       your  AUTOEXEC.BAT file or some other file which is run when  you 
  50.       start  your computer.  You will need to know a little more  about 
  51.       the PC-DOS or MS-DOS operating system to understand this  instal-
  52.       lation method but it is not complicated if you follow the  simple 
  53.       instructions below:

  62.                 *** LIBRARY INSTALLATION *** (Second Method)
  63.       
  64.       If  you have a hard disk follow these instructions when  you  are 
  65.       ready to begin installing the forms libraries and programs:
  66.       
  67.       1. If you use a menu system return to the DOS prompt.  Enter  the 
  68.          following  commands to change to the root directory and make  a 
  69.          new directory called PCFORMS:
  70.       
  71.            C:
  72.            CHDIR \
  73.            MKDIR \PCFORMS
  74.       
  75.       2. Place  the PC-FORMS disk, or disks, in your floppy disk  drive 
  76.          and  enter the following commands to copy the forms  libraries 
  77.          to the new PCFORMS directory on your hard disk: (If the floppy 
  78.          drive  is the B: drive, substitute B: for A: in the  last  two 
  79.          commands)

  81.            CHDIR \PCFORMS
  82.            COPY A:*.LEX
  83.            COPY A:*.VBL
  84.       
  85.                   *** PROGRAM INSTALLATION *** (Second Method)
  86.       
  87.       3. Change  to the directory on your hard disk in which your  word 
  88.          processing  program  is located by  entering  the  appropriate 
  89.          command which is probably one of the following:
  90.       
  91.            CHDIR \WP (for WordPerfect, Version 4.2)
  92.            CHDIR \WP50 (for WordPerfect, Version 5.0)
  93.            CHDIR \WP51 (for WordPerfect, Version 5.1)
  94.            CHDIR \WS (for WordStar, Version 3.3)
  95.            CHDIR \WS4 (for WordStar, Version 4.0)
  96.            CHDIR \WS5 (for Wordstar, Version 5.0 or 5.5)
  97.            CHDIR \WORD (for Microsoft Word)
  98.            CHDIR \PCW (or something similar, for PC-Write)
  99.            CHDIR \VDE (for the Video Display Editor, VDE)
  100.       
  101.          Check  to be sure you are in the right directory  by  entering 
  102.          the  commands DIR *.EXE and DIR *.COM after changing  directo-
  103.          ries  and  checking  for  the  program  file  WP.EXE,  WS.EXE, 
  104.          WORD.EXE, VDE.COM, WS.COM, ED.EXE, or WRITER.COM.  The  appro-
  105.          priate  conversion  utility must also be  in  this  directory.  
  106.          CONVERT.EXE for WordPerfect, WS_RTF.EXE for Microsoft Word  or 
  107.          FWCNV.EXE for FriendlyWriter.
  108.       
  109.       4. Copy the files PCFM.EXE, PCLB.EXE, FMHELP.MSG, ORDER.MSG,  and 
  110.          from  the disk on which they were copied to the  directory  or 
  111.          disk where your word processing program is located.

  114.            COPY A:*.MSG

  121.       5. Check  to see that your word processing directory is  included 
  122.          in the DOS "PATH" command by entering the command:
  123.       
  124.            PATH
  125.       
  126.          If  it is not listed, find the AUTOEXEC.BAT or  MENU.BAT  file 
  127.          containing the "PATH" command which is used when you boot  the 
  128.          system.  Copy the existing file to a file called  AUTOEXEC.SAV 
  129.          or MENU.SAV as a back-up, then, modify it to include the  word 
  130.          processing directory by using EDLIN, VDE or your word  proces-
  131.          sor in Non-Document, ASCII or "DOS Text" mode.  (With WordPer-
  132.          fect  set  the margins as far apart as possible  and  use  the 
  133.          CTRL-F5 options to retrieve and save the file in ASCII).

  136.       YOU  MUST RE-BOOT AFTER CHANGING THE "PATH" COMMAND FOR  THE  NEW 
  137.       PATH TO BECOME EFFECTIVE!!!
  138.       
  139.       You should now be able to start the PC-FORMS program by  changing 
  140.       to  the  PCFORMS Directory and entering the  command  "PCFM"  and 
  141.       start the PC=LIBRARY program by entering the command "DSLB".   If 
  142.       you  use  a menu system you may want to add them  to  your  menu.  
  143.       Just  remember  that  you must change the  directory  to  PCFORMS 
  144.       before starting the programs.
  145.       
  146.       When installed in this manner the PC-FORMS programs will automat-
  147.       ically link with the WordStar, WordPerfect, Microsoft Word,  VDE, 
  148.       PC-Write  or  FriendlyWriter word processors.  They  do  this  by 
  149.       searching  through the PATH for themselves and then linking  with 
  150.       the word processing program, if found in the same directory.

  152.                           THIRD INSTALLATION METHOD
  153.       
  154.                     *** INSTALLATION ON FLOPPY DISKS ***
  155.       
  156.       If  you  do not use a hard disk you can still  run  the  programs 
  157.       linked  to your word processor.  To do so, copy the files  listed 
  158.       in Step 4, above, to the disk where your word processor  programs 
  159.       are  located.   Be  sure to include  the  appropriate  conversion 
  160.       program:
  161.       
  162.         for WordPerfect - CONVERT.EXE;
  163.         for Microsoft Word - WS_RTF.EXE;
  164.         for FriendlyWriter - FWCNV.EXE;
  165.       
  166.       on  that disk with your word processor program.  Then,  copy  the 
  167.       forms libraries from the PC-FORMS disks to a data disk, or disks, 
  168.       by  using  the *.LEX and *.VBL file  specifications.   Start  the 
  169.       programs  by entering "PCFM" or "DSLB" with your data disk  drive 
  170.       as the default drive.

  176.                          FOURTH INSTALLATION METHOD
  177.       
  178.                     *** INSTALLATION WITHOUT LINKING ***
  179.  
  180.       If  you  want to test the PC-FORMS System programs  without  them 
  181.       being linked to your word processor copy ALL OF THE FILES on  the 
  182.       PC-FORMS  disks to the directory or disk from which you  want  to 
  183.       test  it  and  enter "PCFM" or "DSLB" with that  as  the  default 
  184.       directory or disk.

  186.                 *** CREATING AND EDITING FORMS LIBRARIES ***
  187.       
  188.       The  author of the PC-FORMS system recommends the use of the  VDE 
  189.       text  editor for developing or modifying PC-FORMS library  files.  
  190.       It  is available as shareware for a very reasonable  registration 
  191.       fee  and  automatically creates ASCII files  following  the  text 
  192.       rules of the PC-FORMS text library system.  Of course, any  other 
  193.       text  editor capable of creating files of pure ASCII text may  be 
  194.       used.  The author uses WordStar in Non-Document mode.
