PRODUCT : Paradox for Windows NUMBER : 1277
VERSION : 1.0
OS : WIN
DATE : February 23, 1993 PAGE : 1/6
TITLE : Alternate Installation Instructions
In order to install Paradox for Windows, you must have a computer
with a 386 or 486 processor, at least 4MB of memory, 20MB of free
disk space, and Microsoft Windows version 3.1. If you are unable
to install Paradox onto a system that meets these requirements,
the program may be running into a conflict with the system. If
you are having difficulty installing Paradox on a drive other
than the drive where Windows is installed, you should also
investigate issues like hard disk space which is discussed below.
HARD DISK SPACE
For optimal Windows performance, approximately 3MB of free disk
space should be available on the drive where Windows resides. If
the amount of free disk space decreases to less than 2.5MB,
problems may occur when installing Paradox. Files are written to
Window's SYSTEM subdirectory (refer to the README.TXT file on the
first Paradox disk for list of files) and space is needed for
temporary files. If you are installing Paradox onto a drive
other than the drive where Windows is installed, you must verify
that there is sufficient disk space for files on both drives (at
least 3MB free on the Windows drive, and approximately 20MB on
the drive where Paradox will be installed - for all options).
Errors on the hard drive can be responsible for installation
failure. Errors should be repaired using an appropriate data
recovery tool. Ensure that the installation program is not
running into problems on your hard disk by running a utility such
as CHKDSK (Exit Windows and type CHKDSK at the DOS prompt).
Refer to your DOS manual for information regarding CHKDSK.
NOTE: If you are using a hard disk compression program such as
Stacker, hard disk space may be incorrectly evaluated.
Compression programs assume a particular ratio of compression
(e.g., 2 to 1), which is not appropriate for some file types that
do not compress as much. To avoid insufficient disk space
problems, assume that your hard disk has a third less disk space
when installing.

EARLY INSTALLATION FAILURE
If the install program fails before the first screen appears,
and/or an error referring to "LZEXPAND" occurs, a file
(LZEXPAND.DLL) that Windows relies on may be corrupted or
missing. By following the procedure below, you can install
Paradox without the use of this file.
1. Copy PDOXINST.LZ from your first Paradox disk to the
directory where Windows resides (e.g.., C:\WINDOWS).
COPY A:\PDOXINST.LZ C:\WINDOWS
2. Make your Windows directory current (CD C:\WINDOWS) and
type:
EXPAND PDOXINST.LZ PDOXINST.EXE
This command will unpack the Paradox installation program
so that you can run it manually.
3. Load Windows. Select File | Run from the Program
Manager's menu, and type on the Command Line input line:
C:\WINDOWS\PDOXINST.EXE
At this point the installation program should be running. If the
installation is successful, you can delete PDOXINST.EXE from your
Windows directory (e.g.., DEL C:\WINDOWS\PDOXINST.EXE).
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
At times, conflicts with memory resident software and device
drivers (e.g., expanded memory managers, menu utilities, CD ROM
drivers etc.) can prevent the installation program from executing
successfully. To rule out the possibility of conflicts such as
these, you should simplify your system configuration. To install
Paradox, try Example 1 shown below, and if necessary, try Example
2.

EXAMPLE 1
═════════
In order to simplify the system, disable all lines in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files (by typing REM before each
line) that are not necessary for your system to boot and for
Microsoft Windows to run. If this procedure is new to you,
please refer to Tech Info sheet #1180 and to Microsoft's
publication "Getting Started with Microsoft Windows." It is
recommended that you copy your unmodified AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files onto a bootable floppy disk.
A simplified AUTOEXEC.BAT should contain the following lines (it
is assumed that Windows is installed in C:\WINDOWS and that you
wish to install Paradox into the directory C:\PDOXWIN). Note
that the PATH specifies drive letters for each directory. This
syntax is necessary for certain Windows procedures.
PROMPT $P$G
PATH=C:;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
Note: The SET TEMP command must point to a valid directory.
A simplified CONFIG.SYS files should contain the following lines
in addition to device lines that are necessary for your machine:
FILES=60
BUFFERS=40
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /p /e:2048
STACKS=9,256
Note: Verify COMMAND.COM is located in C:\DOS.
Reboot your computer, start Windows in Standard Mode (type WIN /S
at the DOS prompt), and try reinstalling Paradox. Provided
Paradox installs properly, you may add lines from your old
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Remember to add the DOS
command SHARE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you are still unable to
install Paradox, use Example 2 to complete installation.

EXAMPLE 2
═════════
Exit the installation program (or reboot your computer). If this
is the first time you have installed Paradox, exit Windows, skip
the following four steps, and perform the DOS commands shown in
Table 1 below.
If you previously installed Paradox, exit Windows and perform
these four additional steps to ensure that all files from your
previous installation are removed. This procedure will ensure
that old files (that may be corrupted) are replaced with new
files.
1. Copy any personal files (i.e., your data files) to a
different directory or floppy disk.
2. Delete the following files (if they are present) from the
Windows System directory (e.g.., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM):
ODAPI01.DLL
ODAPIQ01.DLL
ODAPI.CFG
BWCC.DLL
LD01.DLL
3. Delete the following files (if they are present) from the
Windows directory (e.g.., C:\WINDOWS):
PDOXWIN.INI
PDOXWORK.INI
4. Continue with the steps listed in Table 1 on the next
page.

Table 1
DOS Commands Effect
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
MD C:\PDOXWIN Creates PDOXWIN directory - if
needed
CD \PDOXWIN Changes to PDOXWIN directory
DEL *.* Deletes any files in the
PDOXWIN directory
MD \PDOXWIN\INSTALL Creates temporary directory
COPY A:\*.* C:\PDOXWIN\INSTALL Copies all diskettes to
\INSTALL
In order to start installation, load Windows, select File | Run
from the Program Manager, then type:
C:\PDOXWIN\INSTALL\INSTALL.EXE
Watch the installation program as it executes. The end of the
installation program will inform you that Paradox has been
successfully installed and will ask you to reboot your computer.
Provided the installation program succeeds, reboot your computer
and add lines from your original AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
files. Delete the files that you copied to the INSTALL directory
and remove the INSTALL directory itself, with the following DOS
commands:
DOS Commands Effect
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
CD \PDOXWIN\INSTALL Makes INSTALL subdirectory current
DEL *.* Deletes ALL files in INSTALL
directory
CD.. Makes PDOXWIN directory current
RD INSTALL Removes INSTALL directory
If you are still unable to install Paradox, contact Borland
Technical Support between the hours of 6:00am to 5:00pm Pacific
Time. Do not delete any of the program files prior to calling,
and please call from a phone near your computer.
