- NETUSE.ZIP and How to Use It
-
- The question "How can I use 4DOS on a Novell network" comes up repeatedly.
- As one who has been using 4DOS without problems on such a network for quite
- some time, I've put together this package to help others do the same.
-
- NOVELL.BTM is the batch file that I use for logging in. I do NOT attempt to
- set up network operation when I boot my machine. Instead, when I need to use
- the net, I execute this file to install the net software and log me in. Then
- when I am done, I use the OFF alias to restore my system to its non-net
- configuration.
-
- This batch file uses the freeware program MARKNET to save my system
- configuration so that I can remove the netware software after logging off.
- MARKNET is on the 4DOS Utility disk, and the very latest version is always
- available in Library 6 (TurboPower) of this PCVENB Forum as "TSRCOM.ZIP" .
-
- I've commented the batch file to indicate what each part of it is doing. In
- particular, I find it useful to put my local-drive PATH directories ahead of
- the network public directory, so that any special software that I use is not
- confused by having other programs of the same name available on the network.
-
- Note that successful operation requires that you see a prompt after logging
- into the network. If your network forces you to operate through the Netware
- Menu program (notorious for incompatibility with lots of things), you won't
- see any benefit. Even if you have a choice to "return to DOS" from the Menu,
- it's actually a secondary shell that uses the Menu's environment rather than
- your master copy, and that one will still have the script-mangled PATH and
- COMSPEC statements in it!
-
- However if you can get MENU crossed off your own login script, this ought to
- make 4DOS work nicely for you.
-
- The other file in this package is the simple OFF alias, which logs you out
- of the network and then restores your system environment from the data that
- was saved by MARKNET before you logged in.
-
- Any questions can be addressed to 4DOS support and Mike will bring them
- either to my attention or that of some other netware user, or you can address
- them to me via Cmail at 76703,762.
