  4. NOTES ON USING APPLICATIONS WITH MS-DOS VERSION 5.0

  7. This document provides important information not included in the
  8. Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference or in online Help.

  10. Look through the following table of contents to determine
  11. whether your application is included.

  53. 1. MAKING YOUR SOFTWARE COMPATIBLE WITH MS-DOS 5.O

  56. 1.1 Aboveboard 286 and Aboveboard Plus Installation Programs
  57. ------------------------------------------------------------
  58. CAUTION: The Intel Aboveboard installation program tests
  59. memory in a way that corrupts extended memory. 
  60.  
  61. Before using Intel's Aboveboard installation program, make sure 
  62. you haven't loaded software such as SMARTDrive or RAMDRIVE that 
  63. uses extended memory.
  64.  
  65. 1.2 AUTORUN.EXE 
  66. ---------------
  67. If you can't use Mountain Network Solutions AUTORUN.EXE, a tape-
  68. drive backup program, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  69.  
  70. 1.3 CodeView 
  71. ------------
  72. CAUTION: Using versions 3.0 to 3.13 of the CodeView CV.EXE file
  73. may cause the loss of data if your system has a 80386 memory 
  74. manager (such as EMM386.EXE) and device drivers or programs that 
  75. use extended memory.
  76.  
  77. To start CodeView versions 3.0 to 3.13 safely, use the CV.COM
  78. file included with MS-DOS 5.0. 
  79.  
  80. Copy the CV.COM file from the distribution disks to the directory 
  81. that contains your CV.EXE file. Then, type the following to start
  82. CodeView:
  83.  
  84.    CV
  85.  
  86.    or
  87.  
  88.    CV.COM
  89.  
  90. If you start CodeView by using a batch file or program item in a
  91. shell (such as MS-DOS Shell), change the batch file or program
  92. item so that it specifies the CV.COM instead of the CV.EXE file.
  93.  
  94. Make sure you use HIMEM.SYS driver version 2.77 or later with
  95. CodeView. Otherwise, the CV.COM file will not prevent data loss.
  96. MS-DOS 5.0 includes version 2.77.
  97.  
  98. This problem has been fixed in CodeView version 3.14. Call 
  99. Microsoft Customer Service to get this version; see your 
  100. registration card for the phone number.
  101.  
  102. 1.4 Easel 6.0
  103. -------------
  104. Interactive Images Easel 6.0 is incompatible with the DOS=HIGH and 
  105. EMM386 commands. Contact your vendor for an update.
  106.  
  107. 1.5 Fastback
  108. ------------
  109. If you run MS-DOS 5.0 in the high memory area, you must use the
  110. LOADFIX command before running Fifth Generation Systems Fastback
  111. or the Fastback installation program. Type the following:
  112.  
  113.     LOADFIX fb.exe
  114.  
  115.     or
  116.  
  117.     LOADFIX fbinstal.exe
  118.  
  119. For information about the LOADFIX command, see Chapter 4 of the
  120. Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started guide.

  122. 1.6 GeoWorks 
  123. ------------
  124. If you cannot run GeoWorks (PC/GEOS) after installing MS-DOS 
  125. 5.0, use the SETVER command to report version number 4.01 to the
  126. GEOS.EXE file.
  127.  
  128. Do not run the installation program for GeoWorks Ensemble when
  129. MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper is active.
  130.  
  131. Use the Exclusive Tasking option when running GeoWorks Ensemble 
  132. with Windows, and use the Prevent Program Switch option when 
  133. running it with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper. 
  134.  
  135. 1.7 Keyboard Conflicts
  136. ----------------------
  137. Some software packages do not support the extended ROM BIOS for 
  138. 101/102-key keyboards.  These include Lotus Metro, Lotus Express, 
  139. IBM Displaywrite III, Borland Turbo Lightning, and Micro Logic 
  140. Tornado 1.8. If you can't use your keyboard after starting an
  141. application, restart your computer, and add the following line
  142. to your CONFIG.SYS file:
  143.    
  144.    switches=/k
  145.    
  146. If you are using ANSI.SYS, also add a /k switch to the 
  147. DEVICE=ANSI.SYS command in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  148.  
  149. 1.8 Lotus 1-2-3 (3.0 or Later)
  150. ------------------------------
  151. If you run Lotus 1-2-3 3.0 with Task Swapper in MS-DOS Shell,
  152. set the XMS Memory KB Required option in the Advanced dialog box
  153. to 384. 
  154.  
  155. For more information about specifying advanced properties, see 
  156. Chapter 8 of the Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference.
  157.  
  158. If you run Lotus 1-2-3 3.0 or later and load device drivers or
  159. memory-resident programs into the upper memory area,
  160. use the RAM switch with the DEVICE=EMM386.EXE command in your
  161. CONFIG.SYS file.
  162.  
  163. 1.9 Manifest
  164. ------------
  165. Version 1.0 of Quarterdeck Manifest is incompatible with MS-DOS
  166. 5.0. Contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  167.  
  168. 1.10 Paintbrush 2.0
  169. -------------------
  170. If you have an EGA monitor and want to run Microsoft or ZSoft
  171. Paintbrush 2.0, you must remove the DEVICE=EGA.SYS command from
  172. your CONFIG.SYS file. After removing the command, you may 
  173. have difficulty with screen swapping when using Task Swapper in
  174. MS-DOS Shell.
  175.  
  176. 1.11 PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  177. -----------------------------
  178. Do not load versions of Multisoft PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  179. earlier than 2.0 into the upper memory area.
  180.  
  181. 1.12 Pklite
  182. -----------
  183. Do not use Pklite to pack device drivers.
  184.  
  185. If you have a PC-Kwik cache on your system, and you can't run
  186. a packed program, do one of the following:
  187.    * Use the LOADFIX command to start the program.
  188.    * Run MS-DOS 5.0 in conventional memory.
  189.    * Run a version of the program that was not packed with Pklite.
  190.    * Disable asynchronous reads on the PC-Kwik cache.
  191.

  195. 1.13 ProKey and MS-DOS Editor/QBasic
  196. ------------------------------------
  197. Some versions of RoseSoft ProKey are incompatible with MS-DOS
  198. Editor and QBasic.
  199.  
  200. 1.14 Sidekick 2.0
  201. -----------------
  202. If you are running MS-DOS 5.0 in the high memory area, use the
  203. following LOADFIX command to start Borland Sidekick 2.0:
  204.  
  205.     LOADFIX sk2.exe
  206.

  208. Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started guide.

  210. 1.15 Soft-ICE
  211. -------------
  212. When using Nu-Mega Soft-ICE, load it before loading other
  213. drivers. Otherwise, you may lose data stored in extended memory
  214. by drivers such as SMARTDrive.
  215.  
  216. 1.16 Software Carousel
  217. ----------------------
  218. Software Carousel 5.0 is incompatible with MS-DOS 5.0. 
  219.  
  220. If you installed HIMEMSLS.SYS, remove the DEVICE=HIMEMSLS.SYS
  221. command from your CONFIG.SYS after running Setup.
  222.  
  223. To use DOSKEY, load it after loading Software Carousel into 
  224. memory.
  225.  
  226. 1.17 Task Swapper and Asynchronous I/O
  227. --------------------------------------
  228. Some programs that perform asynchronous communications are
  229. incompatible with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper. Terminal-emulation 
  230. software (such as SmartCom and Procomm Plus) and server/client
  231. software (such as Laplink and Blast) are asynchronous 
  232. communications programs. If you can't use an asynchronous
  233. program, contact your vendor for more information.
  234.  
  235. 1.18 Ventura Publisher
  236. ----------------------
  237. If you can't start Ventura Publisher, make sure your Ventura
  238. Publisher directory is within the first 70 characters of the PATH 
  239. command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  240.  
  241. 1.19 WordPerfect WPINFO.EXE 5.1
  242. -------------------------------
  243. Some versions of WordPerfect WPINFO.EXE are incompatible with
  244. MS-DOS 5.0. Contact your vendor for more information.
  245.  
  246. 1.20 WordPerfect Office 3.0
  247. ---------------------------
  248. Some versions of WordPerfect Office 3.0 are incompatible with
  249. MS-DOS 5.0. Contact your vendor for more information.
  250.  
  251. 1.21 XTreeNet
  252. -------------
  253. To use XTreeNet with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper, select the
  254. Prevent Program Switch option in the MS-DOS Shell Advanced
  255. dialog box. For more information about specifying advanced 
  256. properties, see Chapter 8 of the Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide
  257. and Reference.
