  2. Manual installation with Stacker 2.0 currently installed

  9. For these examples of a manual installation we have assumed that the
  10. original boot partition is lettered C:.  If your boot partition is labeled
  11. other than C:, please replace "C:" below with the drive letter representing
  12. your boot partition.
  13.  
  14. BACKUP YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE TRYING THE FOLLOWING.  ALSO, have a copy of
  15. your present operating system's CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT handy for
  16. reference.  A full understanding of the STACKER 2.0 disk compression
  17. utility is recommended before attempting the following steps.  It is also
  18. recommended that you NOT install the security feature of DR DOS until we
  19. are sure DR DOS and Stacker are working properly after installation.

  21. INSTRUCTIONS
  22.  
  23. The instructions for a manual installation on a hard disk with Stacker 2.0
  24. already installed are as follows:
  25.  
  26. 1.      Using DISKCOPY, make a backup of the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP diskette.
  27.  
  28. 2.      Reboot with the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette.  Eventually the
  29.         drive will stop turning at the first installation screen.
  30.     
  31. 3.      Break out of the installation by pressing <F10> and choosing "Exit
  32.         to DR DOS".
  33.  
  34. 4.      From the A: prompt type EDITOR CONFIG.SYS to edit the Config.sys
  35.          on this backup diskette.
  36.  
  37. 5.      Add the following lines to the END of the Config.sys file:
  38.  
  39.     DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
  40.     DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
  41.     
  42.         These additions will make the DR DOS 6.0 INSTALL program "Stacker
  43.         Aware". Meaning that DR DOS INSTALL will now recognize your Stacker
  44.         Volumes, as well as your uncompressed volume.
  45.  
  46. 6.      Remove the lines: DEVICE=\SSTORDRV.SYS and DEVICE=\DEVSWAP.COM
  47.         from this same CONFIG.SYS file.  This will disable SuperStor,
  48.         DR DOS's disk compression utility, from being loaded from the
  49.         backup STARTUP diskette.
  50.  
  51. 7.      Save your changes to CONFIG.SYS by performing a CTRL-K and pressing 
  52.          X to Save and Exit.  For additional information regarding DR DOS's 
  53.          EDITOR program, please see the DR DOS 6.0 User Guide.

  55. NOTE: Remember that the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette is now Stacker aware.
  56.       Now if we were to reboot from this DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette, we
  57.       should notice the Stacker drives loading and swapping the appropriate
  58.       drive letters.  PREPARE to determine which drive letter is mounting
  59.       as your Stacker uncompressed volume (which drive is swapping with C:).
  60.       We can do this by watching Stacker as it mounts.
  61.  
  62.     Swapped drives C: and __: 
  63.  
  64.         FILL in the above blank, and all of the below blanks (underscores),
  65.         in this tip, with the drive letter representing the uncompressed
  66.         boot partition that swaps with C:.
  67.  
  68. 8.      Reboot with the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette and note the swap
  69.         drive as explained in the NOTE above.  Eventually the drive will
  70.         stop turning at the first installation screen.
  71.  
  72. 9.      Break out of the installation by pressing <F10> and choosing "Exit
  73.         to DR DOS".
  74.  
  75. 10.     From the A: prompt type SYS __: This will transfer the proper boot
  76.         files from the installation diskette in drive A: to your __:
  77.         uncompressed boot partition.  Now drive __: is a DR DOS 6.0 boot
  78.         drive.
  79.  
  80. 11.     Also from the A: prompt type SYS C:.  This will transfer the proper
  81.         boot files from the installation diskette in drive A: to your C:
  82.         Stacker partition.  Most importantly, this will create a new DR DOS
  83.         Boot Sector if your hard disk was previously formatted under another
  84.         version of the operating system.
  85.  
  86. 12.     Move to drive __: and create a DR DOS subdirectory by typing MD
  87.         DRDOS.
  88.  
  89. 13.     Move to drive C: and create a DR DOS subdirectory by typing MD DRDOS. 
  90.  
  91. 14.     Move back to A: and copy all of the files from all of your DR DOS 6.0
  92.         diskettes into the C: DRDOS subdirectory.  The copying is
  93.         accomplished by typing COPY *.* C:\DRDOS from the A: prompt with
  94.         each individual DR DOS diskette.  You may use either the original
  95.         STARTUP or the backup STARTUP diskette here.

  97. 15.     Move to the C:\DRDOS subdirectory by typing C:\ and then CD DRDOS.
  98.  
  99. 16.     Delete COMMAND.COM, CONFIG.SYS, and AUTOEXEC.BAT from this DR DOS
  100.         subdirectory.  These files will not be needed here.  This is
  101.         accomplished by typing DEL <FILENAME>.
  102.  
  103. 17.     Rename INSTALL.EXE to SETUP.EXE by typing REN INSTALL.EXE SETUP.EXE.
  104.  
  105. 18.     Run SETUP by typing SETUP, and install each portion of DR DOS.
  106.         Note: DO NOT INSTALL THE SUPERSTOR PORTION OF DR DOS.  SUPERSTOR
  107.         AND STACKER CANNOT BE USED TOGETHER.
  108.  
  109. 19.     Once you are configured and have DR DOS installed, choose EXIT TO
  110.         DRDOS. DO NOT REBOOT YOUR MACHINE!
  111.  
  112. 20.     From the C:\DRDOS subdirectory type EDITOR C:\CONFIG.SYS.
  113.  
  114. 21.     Add the following lines to the end of the CONFIG.SYS file:
  115.  
  116.     DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACKVOL.DSK
  117.     DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
  118.     
  119.         These additions will make your DR DOS hard disk installation
  120.         "Stacker Aware". Meaning that DR DOS configuration files will allow
  121.         you to recognize your Stacker Volumes as well as your uncompressed
  122.         volume.

  124. 22.     Also, write down any of the NEW (DR DOS) drivers which are loaded
  125.         prior to the last two lines added above.  (NOTE: This is why it is
  126.         recommended that you have a copy of your old CONFIG.SYS and
  127.         AUTOEXEC.BAT handy. You may now compare your old CONFIG.SYS with
  128.         the new CONFIG.SYS DR DOS created and determine which drivers DR
  129.         DOS has added)  Look for lines which begin with a DEVICE, HIDEVICE,
  130.         INSTALL, or HIINSTALL command.  REMEMBER the two lines will be
  131.         loaded from this __: drive.  This is why we have to make sure they
  132.         are in the DRDOS subdirectory on the __: drive for CONFIG.SYS to
  133.         find them.

  135. 23.     Save your changes to CONFIG.SYS by performing a CTRL-K and then
  136.         press X to Save and Exit.  For additional information regarding DR
  137.         DOS's EDITOR program, please see the DR DOS 6.0 User Guide.

  139. 24.     Copy all of the files noted in step #22 above to the DRDOS
  140.         subdirectory on __: (__:\DRDOS).  This is accomplished by issuing a
  141.         COPY <FILENAME> __:\DRDOS.
  142.       
  143. 25.     Move back to the root directory by typing a CD \.  From here, copy
  144.         your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to the _: root directory (__: \).
  145.         This is accomplished by issuing a COPY <FILENAME> __: \.
  146.  
  147. 26.     Stacker and DR DOS are now installed.  You may now reboot your
  148.         machine.
  149.         NOTE: If Stacker detects changes in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS
  150.         during boot, let Stacker make the changes by pressing a "Y".
