LL7FMT README FILE
LL7FMT IS A GENERAL PURPOSE LOW LEVEL FORMAT PROGRAM FOR MICROCHANNEL
COMPATIBLE ESDI HARD DISK CONTROLLERS. THIS INCLUDES THE WD1007V-MC1.
FEATURES:
- USER DEFECT ENTRY IN CYLINDER, HEAD, OFFSET FORMAT
- RETRIEVAL OF DEFECTS FROM ASCII TEXT FILE
- ABILITY TO SAVE DEFECTS TO ASCII TEXT FILE
- CONTROL OF FORMAT OPTIONS
LL7FMT ALLOWS THE USER TO ENTER DRIVE DEFECTS MANUALLY. TYPICALLY THIS
WOULD ONLY BE NECESSARY WHEN THE MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT LIST PLACED ON
THE DRIVE BY THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN ERASED. LL7FMT WILL NOTIFY THE
USER AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THE MANUFACTERER'S DEFECT LIST IS PRESENT.
IN ORDER TO ENTER DRIVE DEFECTS, THE USER MUST SUPPLY THE UNFORMATTED
NUMBER OF BYTES PER TRACK FOR THE DRIVE BEING USED. THIS INFORMATION IS
USUALLY AVAILABLE IN THE DRIVE'S USER'S GUIDE.
BESIDES ENTERING THE DRIVE DEFECTS MANUALLY, THE DRIVE DEFECTS CAN BE
RETRIEVED FROM AN ASCII TEXT FILE. THERE SHOULD ONLY BE ONE DEFECT ON
EACH LINE AND THE CYLINDER, HEAD, AND OFFSET INFORMATION SHOULD BE
SEPERATED BY A SPACE OR COMMA. ONCE THE INPUTTING OF DEFECTS IS COM-
PLETE, THE USER HAS THE OPTION OF SAVING THE DEFECTS THAT ARE IN MEMORY
TO A FILE. THE DEFECTS WILL BE PLACED IN A NEW FILE OR APPENDED TO A
FILE THAT ALREADY EXISTS, DEPENDING ON THE FILE NAME ENTERED BY THE USER.
LL7FMT ALSO ALLOWS COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE FORMAT OPTIONS. THE USER CAN
SPECIFY WHETHER OR NOT A SURFACE ANALYSES SHOULD BE PERFORMED AND CAN
INSTRUCT THE CONTROLLER ON HOW TO USE, OR NOT USE, THE PRIMARY AND
SECONDARY DEFECT LISTS. A HELP OPTION IS AVAILABLE IN LL7FMT THAT
EXPLAINS THESE OPTIONS IN MORE DETAIL.
