  3.                      M2266SA  DISK DRIVE.
  4.  
  5. An article recently appeared in the Digital News magazine, which
  6. described the possible "loss of data" a User may experience, when
  7. using a Fujitsu M2266SA disk Drive.
  8.  
  9. What should be realized is that any such loss of data is not due to
  10. a problem with the drive itself, but is caused by an improper
  11. configuration of the System Software, or, Host Adapter/Firmware
  12. which cannot properly utilize the full available capacity of the
  13. M2266SA drive.
  14.  
  15. A brief explanation of the technical issue will follow and then a
  16. recommendation of what the User should do in order to obtain 
  17. maximum capacity and secure operation of the product.
  18.  
  19. Fujitsu disk drives are manufactured in strict compliance with the
  20. ANSI specifications for the SCSI disk drive interface and command
  21. sets. 
  22. When the system software has to write or read data to and from the
  23. disk, commands are sent which specify the address on the drive
  24. where the data is located.
  25. Early SCSI Software and Host Adapters utilized what are called
  26. "Group Zero" commands, which have an address field of twenty one
  27. bits of binary data, which means that the highest address available
  28. is just over "One Thousand and Seventy Three Megabytes".  (1.073
  29. Gigabytes.)
  30.  
  31. Until recently, this was more than adequate to handle the disk
  32. drives generally available in the typical SCSI environment.
  33.  
  34. In the ever-increasing growth of disk capacity, Fujitsu has
  35. delivered the M2266SA drive which has a capacity of over "One
  36. Thousand and Seventy Nine Megabytes (1.079 Gigabytes.)
  37. This is more than Five Megabytes greater than is addressable by the
  38. "Group Zero" commands !
  39.  
  40. What is needed to fully address drive capacities above the 1.073
  41. Gigabyte limit, are the "Group One" command sets, (as defined by
  42. ANSI), which have "Thirty Two bits" in the address field and can
  43. address over  Two Thousand  One Hundred and  Ninety Nine  (2199)
  44. Gigabytes.  (Hopefully this will last for a while).
  45.  
  46. A number of Fujitsu Customers ran into questions or difficulties
  47. during the installation phase with the M2266SA, while some we heard
  48. from, appeared to have successfully performed the installation, but
  49. who later had data on cylinder zero overwritten, due to an address
  50. "wrap-around".
  51.  
  52. It appears that there is some relatively unsophisticated software 
  53. in use, which is writing data at the very top addresses of the
  54. drive, is then incrementing addresses on subsequent write commands
  55. and does not check to see if the maximum addressable limit has been
  56. reached for group zero commands (i.e. 1FFFFF Hex.)   An overflow
  57. occurs out of the address field, therefore the next effective 
  58. address sent to the drive is zero, thus overwriting the data which
  59. is already written there.

  61. There are software systems using group zero commands perfectly
  62. normally, not encountering any such problem, because at
  63. installation time, appropriate parameters are given to the system,
  64. so that it will only use the address capability available to the
  65. group zero commands.   For example, we believe that there is no
  66. problem on a SUN system, but there could be a problem with DEC and
  67. APPLE.  
  68.  
  69. Obviously a drive Vendor such as Fujitsu is not privy to the
  70. internal characteristics of the many Software Systems and Host
  71. Adapters available and in use in the world today.

  74. WHAT TO DO BEFORE INSTALLATION.
  75.  
  76. 1.  Ascertain FOR CERTAIN, from the Software and Host Adapter
  77.     suppliers, if the revision level of software and firmware to be
  78.     used is incorporating the "Group ZERO"  or, "Group ONE"  SCSI
  79.     commands.  If "Group ONE", then there is no problem, proceed
  80.     with normal installation.
  81.  
  82. 2.  If the Software/Firmware  uses "Group ZERO" commands, then it
  83.     would be best to upgrade to that which uses "Group ONE", so
  84.     that the full capacity of the drive can be used.  
  85.    
  86. 2a. If this path is not possible, then it must be ensured that
  87.     during installation, the drive capacity is set to 1.073
  88.     Gigabytes or less.
  89.  
  90. 3.  If 2a. cannot be accomplished by software, then the drive
  91.     should be reformatted down to 1.073 Gigabytes.  (i.e. 1FFFFF
  92.     Hex. logical blocks)
  93.     (Note.  This requires a "Mode Select Command" followed by a
  94.     Format command and not all systems make this possible for the
  95.     User, therefore the drive would have to be reformatted by some
  96.     other external equipment.  In this case the Dealer,
  97.     Distributor, or Drive Vendor should be contacted for
  98.     assistance.)

  102. by Fujitsu, to give some assistance in the correct installation of
  103. the M2266SA drive.
