The JB Utilities
(with apologies to Peter Norton)
The following is a list of the JB Utilities library. This
file is distributed with individual utilities, and its
purpose is to inform the person contemplating a registration
of these additional utilities which can be ordered together
for a multiple-order discount of (at least) 20%. When
sending you your registered copy of a program, we may also
include a non-registered copy of one of these for your
consideration. The programming philosophy behind all of them
is to provide means of doing things not otherwise available
or to improve upon what's available. Comments and queries
are invited.
The following programs currently constitute the JB Utilities:
NOTIFY A non-TSR that informs you of important dates
and events upon boot-up. It maintains and
reads a NOTICE.LST when accessed. You can
easily order notification for the same date
in EVERY month; also CANCEL all notices for
current day. Menu or command line control.
REMAIN Tells you which files remain in your directory
after excluding those specified on the command
line. You can then copy or delete them as a
group.
SLAVE Takes a list of DOS commands and, when you've
checked them for accuracy, executes them as a
string of commands. Sort of a dynamic batch
file.
SS String Search loads a text file into memory and
allows you to do repeated string searches with-
out reloading the file each time. Case sensi-
tivity can be toggled or specified on the
command line. New files can be loaded from
within the program. Handles quite large files.
(But there is a size limit--determined by
available RAM). Very swift. Uses BRUN45.EXE.
TYPA Type All. TYPEs all files that fit a wild card
designation. Useful in comparing more than one
CONFIG file, for example. No fee for this one.
A JBUTILS bonus!
RENS Renames. That is, rename a group of files that
conform to a wild card designation. You can
change all your .EXE files to .COM with one
command (should you want to, it's legal to do so).
User must accept changes before they are made, to
avoid mishaps.
FRE There are also other utilities that tell you how
much free space you have in memory. This one also
confirms what kind of monitor you're using. This
is useful for those who aren't certain if they've
upgraded, or what kind of video capabilities they
bought. Don't buy expensive commercial software
to find out you need EGA. Use FRE first.
MUV Our version of a 'move' file. What it does
differently is not require the "\" when reassigning
a file to a target directory. It also warns if the
same filename already exists on target directory.
(Some 'move' utilities will simply abort if they find
a file of the same filename as the object file).
Saves shifted keystrokes, which we like to do.
Works on one file at a time. No wild cards.
If this utility would be more useful to you if it
accepted wild cards, please let me know. BRUN30.
DF Directory Find. Does the '*.*' for you.
Makes computing life easier by avoiding shifted
characters when listing files. You just
type the first identifying letters of a filename
or the extension beginning with the dot. DF
without parameters lists out all the files and
does so in the order DIR would do it but puts it
in two columns. Pauses for a keystroke if there
are more files when screen is filled. Will also
search for all filenames which contain a given
string. Gives you total number of files listed
and total bytes for those files. Permits up to
4 different commands (specifications) on 1
execution. List files of a specified size range.
Permits up to the 3rd nesting level of sub-
directories. Reports drive capacity and amount
available for up to 4 drives on 1 command. Lists
files remaining after a group-file parameter is
excluded (filter mode-available only for reg-
istered users). And, MORE! With this utility,
you should never need to use DIR again.
Uses BRUN45.
DELEXTRA Deletes extra carriage return-line feed from
batch files. This eliminates that extra DOS
prompt that's generated after batch file
processing if the extra cr-lf is not eliminated.
Makes for neater screens. Uses BRUN30.
COPQ Copy with Query. Allows you to select those
files out of a group for copying. This utility
is available from us as shareware but only upon
registering any other program. It is not
distributed with JBUTILxx.ZIP.
VIDMODE A tiny program that tells you what video mode
you're currently in. Does not require a BRUN
module. This is the author's first program
written in assembly. It will recognize most
video modes. If you run into one it can't
handle, please write us, describing your
experience.
CDFREQ Another frequency monitor, only this one controls
the interval between CHKDSKs. If you run CHKDSK
from your AUTOEXEC.BAT, the CHKDSK program can
create quite a delay, relative to the size of your
hard drive. If you believe it doesn't have to be
done every time you boot up (and reboot), but
want to be sure it's done automatically so that
you don't have to think about it, CDFREQ will
do it according to the frequency you specify.
Every 3 days is the default, and it won't repeat
if you reboot.
WORKCHEK An absolutely ideal way to houseclean your
hard drive. This utility lists out all
files bearing the current date stamp, showing
you all new files created. Those that are
deletable get quick action. A great way to
check on the work of those under you, too.
And, keep tabs on files you didn't know your
applications were creating.
DELT Delete Today. That is, delete any files with
today's date stamp. Not for the faint hearted,
but extremely useful when the time is right.
DELT is a good companion to WORKCHEK and is
free when registering WORKCHEK.
Text manipulation programs:
The following are tools that should be in the workbox of anyone who
writes text of any kind: letters, reports, fiction, etc.
Order 2 and get one FREE!
WORDFREQ Analyzes how often words are used in your text
file in order to alert the writer to what might
be the overuse of one or more words.
WORDCNT In development. This counts a specific word in
a selected text file rather than a complete
breakdown of all words as in WORDFREQ. Another
tool that should be in the inventory of writers.
DELINE Delete lines. If you're bothered by extraneous
blank lines in your files, use this program to
automatically and safely remove them. It creates
a new version with a distinct name so you can
check it before deleting the original. Self-
documenting. Uses BRUN30.EXE.
CT Compare Text. This is a utility of which there
are several others. This one does it differently,
however, and was written particularly to compare
program code. Two windows of text which can be
scrolled together or separately. Worth a look
to compare it to other text comparison programs.
Requires EGA or VGA. Uses BRUN45.EXE.
PS2ASCII For anyone who has Postscript files and wants
to separate the pure ASCII text from the plethora
of Postscript printing commands. A unique program
for a unique purpose.
COMBINE Combines 2 or more files to make one comprehensive
file. Appends a file to an existing one. Uses
simple prompts instead of complex DOS syntax.
Computer security programs:
(20% discount if you order both)
HIDEIT A computer-security program, HIDEIT enables you
to hide text files from non-authorized eyes.
It allows you to put a marker at an early point
in the file so that when TYPEd out, enough of
the file is visible to be identifiable. But
that's all TYPE and text editors will reveal.
The rest of it's on disk, but hidden.
HIDEIT allows you to unhide the hidden part
whenever you wish.
LOX A DOS screen-saver with password capability and
manual execution. That is, it's not a TSR
which monitors inactivity at the keyboard (or
mouse). Instead, you execute it with a command.
The command includes the password if you want
one. Whatever string you enter (your initials,
your phone number?) must be reentered in order
to stop it. If you don't enter a password you
stop it with the [ESC] key.
All programs are offered as Shareware and carry a nominal
registration fee. They are copyrighted. Most, but not
all are run in conjunction with a run-time module which is
copyright by Microsoft. Standalone version of any program
is available on request upon registration.
There is an option to sending a registration fee. Users
may purchase The Brenner Restaurant Index for the Greater
Los Angeles Area in lieu of a fee. This book is 274 pages
and costs $12.95 plus sales tax and shipping. See
the .DOC file with any utility for more details. You can
also send for a .GIF illustration of the book for $1 or
download it free from some BBSs. Look for RESTINDX.ZIP.
Remember, buy the book and one registration is FREE!
Most of these programs are at a high level of usefulness but
might not have been developed to their fullest potential. For
further work to occur in such instances, a feedback process
from the user is desirable and registration has an even greater
impact on refocusing attention on a particular program.
We hope you'll find something of usefulness to you in this
library.
