ZIP'R and the ZIF Editor are distributed as one product. Registered users of
ZIP'R are automatically registered to use the ZIF Editor.
ZIP'R is distributed under the shareware concept. You may try ZIP'R for a
period of two weeks. After this period, you must either discontinue using
ZIP'R, or register it. A single-user license is only $39.95 (+$5.00 S&H in
the U.S., or $12.50 S&H on Foreign Orders). This price includes printed
documentation, 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" diskettes, along with a Registration Name and
Number allowing you to register all future versions of ZIP'R. If you are in a
hurry to get a registered version, call STSI at (218) 924-2050, charge it to
your Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover, and receive a temporary
registration name and number over the telephone. This will allow the
modification of all of the ZIP'R Program Defaults, thus removing the delay
screens, if desired. For further registration information and pricing, please
read the REGISTER.DOC file included with ZIP'R.
If you have already registered ZIP'R, feel free to use the ZIF Editor to
simplify your ZIP'R command line. I am confident you will find it very easy
to use, and much less cumbersome than trying to remember all of the necessary
command line parameters.
If you have not yet read the file ZIPR.DOC, please read that first! The
ZIPR.DOC file contains basic information on the operation of ZIP'R, and how to
make it work using command line parameters. The ZIF Editor is meant to aid
users who already understand the basics of how ZIP'R works.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ What Is The ZIF Editor? │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
The ZIF Editor was created to assist ZIP'R users in the maintenance of all
ZIP'R related files. The ZIF Editor allows the direct editing of ZIP'R
Information Files, (.ZIF files), which contain program specific information.
Previous versions of ZIP'R required this information to be entered on the
command line. Version 3.0 uses the ZIP'R Information Files to simplify this
task. The special .IN and .OUT files used by ZIP'R can also be edited by
using the ZIF Editor. The ZIF Editor contains special menu options to modify
the contents of the ZIPR.INI file.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ How Does The ZIF Editor Work? │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
The ZIF Editor allows you to enter the same command line parameters as you
would use on the ZIP'R command line. These command line parameters are saved
in a file with a .ZIF extension. When it comes time to run the desired
program, the only parameter ZIP'R needs to know is the filename which contains
the command line parameters. For example, a typical command line used to run
a program through ZIP'R might look like this:
ZIPR C: \PCTOOLS PCTOOLS ZIP PCSHELL /LCD
Since the ZIF Editor allows you to create a .ZIF file with these parameters in
it, the new command line would look like this:
Page 2
ZIPR PCSHELL.ZIF
It's that simple! The only catch is that .ZIF files MUST be located in the
same sub-directory as ZIP'R, and you MUST specify the .ZIF extension on the
command line. This extension is used by ZIP'R to differentiate between a
standard command line sequence and the new .ZIF file sequence.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ Executing The ZIF Editor: │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
To invoke the ZIF Editor, type "ZIFEDIT" from the \ZIPR sub-directory (or
wherever you store ZIP'R), and press [ENTER]. The ZIF Editor opening screen
will display version number and copyright information. After pressing [ENTER]
or using the mouse to click on "OK", the ZIF Editor main menu displays.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ The File Menu │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
The "File" menu allows you to perform three separate functions on .ZIF files.
First, you can create a new .ZIF file. When you select "New" from the File
menu, the following screen displays:

This is the editing screen that will be used most often within the ZIF Editor.
This screen allows you to enter all of the command line parameters that would
normally be entered on the ZIP'R command line.
Page 3
ZIPR Filename: The entry typed in this field will be the name of the .ZIF
file used to contain this specific set of program
preferences. This is name of the file referenced on the
ZIP'R command line.
Drive: This is the drive where the program to be executed resides.
When you enter the drive letter and press [ENTER] or [TAB]
the ZIF Editor automatically appends a colon (:) to the end
of the letter. (If you type the colon, the ZIF Editor
detects this, and does not append a colon.)
Path: This field should contain the path where the program to be
executed is located. Do NOT specify the drive letter on
this command line! A proper path would be in the format
"\PCTOOLS". The path should contain a backslash (\) as the
first character on this line. When you press [ENTER] or
[TAB], the ZIF Editor automatically detects whether or not
this character is present. If it is not, the ZIF Editor
prepends the backslash, thus avoiding potential error
messages when executing this program.
ZipName: This is the name of the compressed file that will be
created and used by ZIP'R. After you exit from the
specified program, ZIP'R creates the compressed file based
on the filename you enter here.
ZipType: This field should contain the name of the compression
program you want to use to compress this program and its
sub-directories. Valid choices are ZIP, ARJ, LHA, SQZ, or
NONE. Advanced options for this field are contained in the
"Advanced Compression Options" section of the ZIPR.DOC
file.
Executable File: This field should contain the name of the file to be
executed. Do NOT specify an extension in this field! If
you do, when you attempt to execute this program, ZIP'R
will display an error message. Instead, ZIP'R
automatically checks for the existence of a .BAT, .COM, or
.EXE file, and executes the proper program.
Parameters: This field should contain all of the parameters you want to
be passed to the executed program. Although these
parameters are normally passed individually when using
ZIP'R's standard command line, they are passed as one
variable when using a .ZIF file on the command line.
Alternate \DIR\: Advanced users will want to use this optional field for
programs with unique requirements. While most programs
maintain the executable file in the parent program
directory, some programs maintain the executable file in
a lower-level sub-directory. A good example of this
problem is found with Borland Pascal 7.0.
Page 4
C:\
└─BP <---- Most executable files are located
├─PASCAL in this sub-directory.
├─DOC
├─BIN
├─BGI

├─BIN <---- Borland Pascal places the file BP.EXE
├─BGI in the C:\BP\BIN sub-directory.
├─EXAMPLES
├─RTL
├─UNITS
└─PENWIN
In order to compensate for occurrences such as this one,
ZIP'R (along with the ZIF Editor), allows users to specify
an alternate sub-directory for the executable file. In
this case, the alternate sub-directory entered in this
field would be "\BIN\". Since ZIP'R already knows the
programs primary sub-directory (\BP), it appends the
alternate directory in order to find the executable file.
Maximum Users: If you are using the Network/Multitasking version of ZIP'R,
specify the number of concurrent accesses for this program.
For example, if a network program is only licensed for five
users, you will want to enter 5 in this field. This tells
ZIP'R not to allow more than 5 users in this particular
program at the same time. If you are running a
multitasker, you may run the risk of opening multiple
windows of the same program at the same time. It would be
to your benefit to enter 1 in this field. That way, ZIP'R
will only allow you to execute one copy of this program at
a time.
Editing Information
The following are a few technical notes about specific editing features within
the ZIF Editor, and how the ZIF Editor will respond to certain keystrokes.
Upper Case Characters: When new field entries are added to the ZIF Editor's
editing screen, the ZIF Editor will automatically
convert them to UPPER CASE characters. This speeds up
the typing process and provides consistency within the
ZIF Editor. The only field that serves as an
exception to this rule is the "Parameters:" field.
Some programs are case sensitive when accepting passed
parameters, so the ZIF Editor does not convert the
characters in this field to upper case.
Ending a Field: When the ZIF Editor detects that the end of a field
has been reached, it automatically moves the cursor to
Page 5
the next field. For example, if you enter "N:" in the
Drive: field, when the ZIF Editor detects that the
second character has been enter, it automatically
advances the cursor to the Path field.
[TAB] vs [ENTER]: Although the [TAB] and [ENTER] keys serve the same
basic function while editing a .ZIF file, there is one
key difference that users must be aware of. If you
are in the last field of the editing screen, [TAB]
will advance the cursor back to the beginning of the
editing screen. Pressing [ENTER] in the last field of
the editing screen will end the editing process and
give you the option to save the .ZIF file information.
Modifying Entries: If you wish to edit a field within the ZIF Editor, the
entire field must be retyped. This may seem a little
cumbersome, but it is also a handy feature for a
different reason. For example, when the ZIF Editor
loads the default template "UNTITLED.ZIF", users only
need to type a couple of characters in the field and
press [ENTER]. The ZIF Editor automatically clears
out the remaining characters from the field, saving
data entry time.
Other Notes: The ZIF Editor does not currently support the use of
the [INSERT], [DELETE], [PGUP], [PGDN], [HOME], [END],
and arrow keys while editing .ZIF files. These
features will be added to a future version of the ZIF
Editor.
The second function available from the File menu is the ability to open a
previously created .ZIF file. When you select "Open", the ZIF Editor displays
a pop-up scrollable window showing all of the .ZIF files in the current
directory, as shown below:

A file can be selected using the mouse or the arrow keys, as well as the
[PGUP], [PGDN], [HOME], and [END] keys. Once you've located the file you want
to open, click on it with the mouse, or press [ENTER] when it is selected with
the highlight bar, and the ZIF Editor will read the information and import it
into the editing screen to be viewed or modified.
The third function available from the File Menu is the ability to delete a
previously created .ZIF file. Selecting "Delete" will display the same pop-up
scrollable window as shown above. The same keys may be used to select a file,
and the ZIF Editor will display a confirmation dialog box prior to deleting
the selected file.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ The In Menu │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
The "In" menu provides access to options allowing users to create, edit, and
delete .IN files. .IN files are used to execute DOS commands prior to running
a desired program. An example of this would be to flush and disable write
caching before running certain disk utility programs. The following screen
shows a real-world example of how the ZIF Editor can maintain .IN files for
this purpose.

Up to 8 lines of DOS commands can be added for each .IN file created. The
.IN editing screen can be edited by using the same keys that are available to
edit .ZIF files on the .ZIF editing screen.
When the need arises to edit previously created .IN files, or delete them
altogether, the In menu of the ZIF Editor provides the ability to scroll
through pop-up scrollable windows that list all files containing a .IN
Page 7
extension.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ The Out Menu │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
In the same way that users may need to create .IN files to execute DOS commands
prior to running a program, users may also find a need to execute DOS commands
after exiting from a program. In the .IN example shown above, the disk cache
was flushed and disable prior to executing DISKFIX. The .OUT editing screen
can be used to re-enable the cache after the program has been exited. The
following screen shows this example:

Once again, up to 8 lines of DOS commands can be added for each .OUT file
created. The Out menu also provides the ability to open and delete previously
created .OUT files.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ The ZIP'R Menu │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
From the "ZIP'R" menu, users can have access to the settings contained in the
ZIPR.INI file, which is described in the ZIPR.DOC file under the section
titled "The ZIPR.INI File".
Register:
Selecting this option from the ZIP'R Menu will allow users to enter a
Registration Name and Number which will register their copy of ZIP'R. For
registered users who are upgrading from a previous version of ZIP'R, the ZIF
Editor will read in the contents of the ZIPR.INI file, and display the proper
Registration Name and Number. If you accidentally overwrote your ZIPR.INI
file when updating to the new version, simply re-enter your name and number
Page 8
here. The ZIF Editor will save your changes and re-register your copy of
ZIP'R.
For non-registered users, please read the "Registration:" section at the top
of this file. If you do not enter a valid Registration Name and Registration
Number in the two fields provided on this screen, options specified on the
ZIPR defaults screen will not take effect.
Note: The "Registration Name" field is CASE SENSITIVE! Registered users must
enter their registration name using the exact case of the name they
provided when they registered ZIP'R. If you have any doubt, check the
thank-you letter you received from STSI after registering ZIP'R. This
information should be available on that letter.
Defaults:
Selecting this option from the ZIP'R Menu will allow registered users to
customize their ZIP'R program defaults. (The Registration Name and
Registration Number fields described above MUST be filled in correctly for the
changes to the defaults screen to take effect. If the Registration Name and
Number are invalid, or were entered incorrectly, ZIP'R will use its default
settings, regardless of what this screen says!)
The ZIP'R program options contained in the ZIPR.INI file can be changed
through the ZIF Editor's "Defaults" editing screen. Explanations for each
individual setting can be found in the ZIPR.DOC file, under the heading, "The
ZIPR.INI File". Please read this section of the ZIPR.DOC file before changing
any of these settings!
An explanation of the available keys and methods of cursor movements are
described above, under "Editing Information". Basically, the same keys that
are used on the .ZIF editing screen are applicable on this screen as well.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ The Help Menu │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
The "Help" menu provides users access to version number and copyright
information about the ZIF Editor, Registration Information, and ZIF Editor
Help. ZIF Editor Help provides basic information on the concepts behind
ZIP'R, what it is intended to do, and how the ZIF Editor fits into the
picture.
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
│ Questions / Answers: │
■─────────────────────────────────────────■
Question: Why does ".ZIF" need to be placed at the end of the ZIF filename on
the ZIP'R command line?
Answer: ZIP'R was originally written as a command line utility. While many
users will prefer to maintain their programs through the ZIF
Editor, others may still want the flexibility of continuing to use
ZIP'R as a command line utility. In order to satisfy both types of
users, ZIP'R has the ability to recognize .ZIF files AND normal
command line parameters. The only catch is that ZIP'R needs to
Page 9
find a .ZIF extension to know that it should search for a .ZIF
file. Otherwise, ZIP'R will try to interpret the filename as a
normal command line parameter. Basically, if you want to use the
ZIF Editor, make sure that all of your ZIP'R command lines end with
".ZIF".
Question: How do I use a .ZIF file on my command line when I am using the
ZIPRTAME.BAT file to invoke TAME under Windows or DESQview?
Answer: If you are a TAME user, you can continue to use the file
ZIPRTAME.BAT in much the same way as before. For example, if you
were to invoke PC Tools Shell, your old command line would look
something like this:
ZIPRTAME ZIPRN C: \PCTOOLS PCTOOLS ZIP PCSHELL
Since you can save the PC Shell program information into a .ZIF
file, your new command line should look like this:
ZIPRTAME ZIPRN PCSHELL.ZIF
Once again, use of the ZIF Editor saves on the amount of command
line parameters needed on the ZIP'R command line.
