  3.         In response to our telephone conversation, the following is an
  4.         update on the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Memorial (MVVM).
  5.  
  6.         The idea of the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Memorial was conceived
  7.         by a young lady, Teresa Vetter, in the Fall of 1987. She came to
  8.         a meeting of Vietnam Veterans of America, Twin Cities Metro 
  9.         Chapter 62, in September of 1987 and presented her idea. A board
  10.         was formed of Veterans and concerned citizens to get the project
  11.         started. Fund raising was officially started on January 21, 1988
  12.         (the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Peace Accords).

  14.         The original idea was to have a Memorial similar to the one in
  15.         Washington D.C. However, after much discussion with various 
  16.         Veterans groups, it was decided to build something unique.The
  17.         original plan evolved into what we just completed the week
  18.         before Memorial Day, 1990. A National competition to determine
  19.         the design. 218 designs were entered. A jury consisting of 5
  20.         design professionals, a State Senator, a State Representative, 2
  21.         Vietnam Veterans and 1 representative from the Capital Area
  22.         Architectural and Planning Board, selected the winning design,
  23.         "Lakefront DMZ". Lakefront DMZ was designed by a team from by a
  24.         team from Minneapolis.
  25.         
  26.         Ground breaking is scheduled for Fall of 1990, with dedication
  27.         scheduled for Fall of 1991. The budget for the entire project is
  28.         $1,200,000.00. This includes expenses incurred from the inception
  29.         in 1987 to dedication in 1991 and also a post dedication
  30.         maintenance fund.

  32.         We have raised about $650,000.00 as of June, 1990. In order to
  33.         stay on schedule, we must raise an additional $250,000.00 this
  34.         year and the remainder next year.
