  9. Dear Mr. President,

  12.                               AN OPEN LETTER

  15.      I was quite distressed last night when you attempted during
  16. your speech to impugn the patriotism of those who might disagree
  17. with your proposals to radically raise taxes across a broad
  18. spectrum, and who might not wish to share in your call to
  19. sacrifice.  During the campaign you were incensed at those who
  20. questioned your efforts to avoid military service during the Viet
  21. Nam war.  You claimed that this was an illegitimate attempt to
  22. question your patriotism.  You spoke of the right, even the duty
  23. to civil disobedience when in disagreement with the government. 
  24. As recently as the campaign you reaffirmed that you still
  25. affirmed you resistance to authority at that time.
  26.      In 1969, when you were successfully avoiding participation
  27. in the great sacrifice of that time, I entered the army and went
  28. to Viet Nam with a combat MOS for a year.  I feel I have already
  29. made my sacrifice - and I, like so many others, have been treated
  30. with scorn for it ever since by liberal society and your
  31. political party, and with scant regard by the government.  This
  32. time, when I hear the call to "sacrifice" and "duty", its my turn
  33. to say, "Count me out".   However, I promise that I will not go
  34. so far as you did, and will not openly demonstrate against your
  35. economic and social policies in any foreign country.
  36.      Instead of smearing the patriotism of those who disagree
  37. with your programs, in view of your own past do you not think it
  38. would be far more fitting if you were to recognize that people
  39. may honestly and honorably disagree with your evaluations and
  40. oppose your programs?  Wouldn't it be far more honorable if you
  41. were to take measures to assure that all who disagree with you
  42. could decline to participate in your government program without
  43. penalty or consequence, just as you did twenty-four years ago?
