SUMMARY
MAPSCAL.EXE is a utility program designed for the HP LaserJet III series
printers and the IBM PC. MAPSCAL will print sample sheets of scalable
soft fonts. These scalable soft fonts must be in the SFS format, (there
is another format called FAIS that is used by Intellifont For Windows).
You tell MAPSCAL the name of the soft font and the point size you would
like to see. The program will print samples of the alphabet, some lines
of text, and a character map.
REQUIREMENTS
MAPSCAL requires a minimum of 128K of memory, and an HP LaserJet III or
better printer. This program only works on parallel printer ports. LPT1:,
LPT2:, & LPT3: are supported. Scalable soft fonts do *not* work on the
older series II printers.
OPERATION
To display a help screen, simply type the program name in and hit the
return key:
mapscal
To print a sample sheet of a scalable soft font you must specify the soft
font name and the point size you wish to display the font in. Most
scalable soft fonts end with the file name extension ".SFS". The point
size can be a floating point or interger number.
Use --> mapscal softfont pointsize
So to print a sample sheet of the scalable soft font PER00USO.SFS in
15.5 points type:
mapscal per00uso.sfs 15.5
The soft font will be sent to parallel port LPT1 by default. To change
the parallel port, just enter the port you want to use as an option.
Say you want to print the same soft font in 12 points on LPT2:
mapscal per00uso.sfs 12 LPT2
MAPSCAL normally prints sample text and a character map. You can
eliminate the sample text with the -n option. To print a sample in 24
points with no sample text on LPT1 type:
mapscal cob00uso.sfs 24 -n
Finally, the line spacing used for sample text is calculated by MAPSCAL.
This value can be wrong in some unusual fonts. To override the calculated
value just enter the line spacing you want to use in 1/48s of an inch.
Say you want to print in 10 points at exactly 6 lines per inch:
mapscal coi00uso.sfs 10 -8
If you type MAPSCAL with no command line arguments the program will show
the following help screen:
Print a symbol set mapping of a scalable font, Version 1.0

Use --> mapscal softfont pointsize [printer] [-## -n]
where, softfont: is the file name of the soft font you want to print a
sample sheet of
pointsize: is the size to print on the sample sheet (example: 12.5)
[printer] refers to an optional parallel printer port (LPT1 default)
[-#] is the optional line spacing in 1/48s of an inch
[-n] suppresses printing a sample alphabet and text
dispfont trm00uso.sfs 14 --> prints sample of 14 point Times-Roman (LPT1)
dispfont penb0uso.sfs 10 -15 --> prints a sample of 10 point Script with 15/48
line spacing
dispfont hel00uso.sfs 20 lpt2 --> prints sample of 20 point Helvetica via LPT2
