The chief trouble with learning to read and write is that English
spelling is half logical and half illogical, it is half phonetic
and half unphonetic, half rule-abiding and half not. Only a good
memory can keep in mind which condition applies to which word.
To quote John Steinbeck, "Learning to read is perhaps the greatest
single effort that the human undertakes, and he must do it as a child."
The result is that there are more than 27 million English speaking
adults in the U.S. who are functionally illiterate.
