  1.                       Tutorial for KwikWrite Print module

  3. KwikWrite has two primary modules, the editor and the print module. Documents
  4. are created in the editor, and printed to a printer, the monitor, or to a 
  5. file using the PRINT module (KWPR.EXE).
  6.  
  7. This tutorial will show how to prepare a document in the editor. The Print 
  8. Module of KwikWrite prints your document in the style specified by "dot" 
  9. commands which are entered into the text during the edit stage. During 
  10. editing, you may move back and forth from edit to print until the document is 
  11. as you like it. During this process, you can print your document to the
  12. MONITOR, to see how it will look on the printer.

  24.                               PRINT (DOT) COMMANDS
  25.  
  26. Print commands consist of a dot, ".", in the first column (left-hand edge of
  27. the screen) followed by a command name. For example, the command ".SKIP 5" 
  28. causes five blank lines to be "skipped" in the document at printout. Some dot 
  29. commands set up parameters for printing, like margins or type styles. Other 
  30. dot commands allow you to read information from a text file, or a database,
  31. allowing you to use "mail merge". Commands fall into these categories:

  37.     5. Commands Related to Page Titles

  47. We will not try to teach all commands in this tutorial. Lessons in the manual 
  48. lead your through the use of the most common commands. Even though there are
  49. Dozens of commands, YOU CAN PERFORM MOST WORD PROCESSING BY LEARNING ONLY A
  50. HANDFUL. The rest of the commands are there for special uses.

  52. Also, many of the printer options can be chosen in the initialization 
  53. procedure (the KWSETUP program). This allows you to type your document into 
  54. the editor very close to "What you see is what you get". 
  55.  
  56. An important concept to understand in word processing is the way lines are 
  57. formed. In KwikWrite, there are three major categories: nofill, fill, and
  58. justify. Nofill mode causes lines to be printed out exactly as they appear in
  59. the editor. Fill mode instructs the PRINT module to place as many words on 
  60. each line as possible. Justify mode is like fill mode, except the words are 
  61. spaced so that the right margin is lined up with the right margin.

  75. │KwikWrite.  Putting the command ".par" just before a line    │
  76. │of text causes the text to be indented.  The default indent  │
  77. │is 5 spaces, but this may be changed by using the command    │
  78. │".ind n" where n is the number of spaces to indent.          │

  81. │Therefore, if we want to indent 10 spaces at the beginning   │
  82. │of each paragraph, we simple put the command ".ind 10" in    │
  83. │the master document before using the command ".par" to cause │

  86. Margins are set uing the .lm (left margin) and .rm (right margin), and
  87. paragraphs are printed in ".fill" mode:

  91. RESULTING OUTPUT LOOKS LIKE THIS:

  94.           KwikWrite. Putting the command ".par" just before a line of 
  95.           text causes the text to be indented. The default indent is 5 
  96.           spaces, but this may be changed by using the command ".ind n"
  97.           where n is the number of spaces to indent.

  104. NOTICE, margins and indent can be set up as defaults in the SETUP installation
  105. procedure, but this illustrated how they can be changed "on the fly".

  107. A series of Help screens, summarizing the dot command are available in EDIT,
  108. by pressing F1. You may look at them now by pressing the F1 function key.

  113. Points to ponder:
  114.  
  115. - The editor and print module can handle files of ANY LENGTH. The only 
  116. limitation is your disk storage space. 
  117.  
  118. - Many popular printers are directly supported, and KwikWrite can be
  119. installed for these printers using the SETUP program. In addition, you can 
  120. use the SETUP program to install virtually any printer. 
  121.  
  122. - KwikWrite allows unlimited margin changes, unlimited include files (the USE 
  123. command) and unlimited use of special printer commands.
  124.  
  125. - KwikWrite allows text inclusion (mail merge) from dBASE III files.
  126.  
  127. - KwikWrite is simple to learn, but has powerful options when you need them.
