  21. The Rubicon Publisher is a BATCH PROCESSOR which is used to publish text
  22. files which have been previously prepared in plain ASCII format using
  23. any suitable word processor or text editor, or any other software which
  24. generates plain ASCII text files. It is a serious desk-top publishing
  25. program, not really designed for beginners; but if you can use a word
  26. processor, you can install and use the Publisher sucessfully, provided
  27. that you read and follow the instructions, and pay reasonable attention
  28. to detail when preparing text files for publication. It will enable you
  29. to produce a wide variety of documents -- forms, notices,
  30. advertisements, newsletters, reports, financial statements, leaflets,
  31. brochures, book-length projects, etc. -- with typesetting of
  32. professional quality. In short, it's a very useful program: and it's
  33. also more fun than most video games, because its creative possibilities
  34. are limited only by your imagination.

  36. This edition of Version 2.2C of the RUBICON PUBLISHER is distributed as
  37. "SHAREWARE". Under the shareware concept, copies of program disks are
  38. freely circulated among computer users, so that they can become
  39. acquainted with the program at no charge. Funding for development of
  40. shareware software is collected by the HONOR SYSTEM--actual users of
  41. the program pay the requested licence fee. This fee is much lower than
  42. the price of comparable commercial software. It is the user who
  43. ultimately pays for excess advertising and dealer mark-ups. (Advertising
  44. budgets often exceed development costs by a ratio of 10 to 1.) Remember
  45. too, that successful shareware companies help lower the prices of
  46. regular commercial software by providing healthy competition. By
  47. remitting the licence fees for all shareware programs that you actually
  48. use, you can help ensure the continued supply of good quality software
  49. at reasonable prices. The shareware "try before you buy" system will
  50. only work if shareware users respect the fact that shareware is
  51. proprietary software: it is NOT in the Public Domain.

  54. purposes other than evaluation, you are legally obliged to purchase a
  55. user's licence. When registering, please use one of the self-publishing

  75. When you register, you will receive a copy of the Commercial Edition of
  76. the current version of the Publisher. The Commercial Edition is too
  77. large for convenient distribution as Shareware, and contains licensed
  78. third-party software not available as shareware. It therefore includes
  79. the following important features, not found in the Shareware Edition:

  81.      * Automatic Optimal Paragraph Composition
  82.      * Automatic Hyphenation
  83.      * Graphics (LaserJet & Postscript)
  84.      * Rubicon's Times, Helv, Classic, Nova and Courier soft fonts
  85.             in extended range of point sizes
  86.      * Bold Italic soft fonts
  87.      * Installation Utility for third-party soft fonts
  88.      * Font compression utilities

  90. You will also receive a printed copy of the complete Reference Manual,
  91. which provides full documentation of all features of the Publisher,
  92. together with a glossary of technical terms, a quick reference guide,
  93. numerous worked examples, and much other useful information which would
  94. not fit in the Concise Manual included with the Shareware distribution
  95. files. For period of one year, you will be entitled to purchase all
  96. program updates, for an update licence fee of $15.00.

  98. We encourage users to make as many evaluation copies of the RUBICON
  99. PUBLISHER Shareware Edition as they like, and to pass them on to all
  100. interested parties, but copying of the Commercial Edition or the printed
  101. Reference Manual is not permitted.

  105.                               WHAT TO DO
  106.  
  107. 1. Retrieve and read file MANUAL.1.
  108.  
  109. 2. Install the Publisher by running the INSTALL program in accordance
  110. with the instructions in Sections 1.2 and 1.3 of the Manual in file
  111. MANUAL.1. (PLEASE don't try to install the Publisher before reading
  112. these instructions.)

  114. 3. To get a feel for the program, PUBLish specimen text files SAMPLE_1,
  115. SAMPLE_2, ... SAMPLE_4, and one or more of the "REGFORM" files
  116. (REGFORM.US, REGFORM.CAN, etc.) which you will find on the RUBICON
  117. directory. Note: SAMPLE_4 is the table of contents for the Concise
  118. Manual. The "REGFORM" files are the registration and order form as
  119. explained above.

  121. To PUBLish these files:
  122.      (a) Make sure your printer is ready and on line;
  123.      (b) log on to the directory RUBICON (if you are not already there);
  124.      (c) enter the command: 
  125.                                   PUBL SAMPLE_1 /T
  126.  
  127.      (d) Wait for Sample_1 to be printed out, and examine the results.

  129.      (e) Repeat steps (c) and (d) for SAMPLE_2, SAMPLE_3, SAMPLE_4 and
  130.      one or more of the "REGFORM" files.
  131.  
  132. Remember to BE PATIENT: the Publisher generally requires AT LEAST ONE
  133. AND ONE-HALF MINUTES of processing time, before it starts to print, and
  134. may require SEVERAL MINUTES, depending on the complexity of the document
  135. being published, and the hardware setup being used. During much of this
  136. processing time, the Publisher may not appear to be doing anything.  To
  137. reassure you that the program is really running, we have specified use
  138. of the run-time switch "/T" to invoke the "Tracers" option, as described
  139. in Section 2.4 of the Manual. The screen display produced by the
  140. "Tracers" option shows each detailed step the Publisher takes in
  141. formatting and publishing the document. It is primarily intended as a
  142. diagnostic (or "trouble-shooting") tool, and experienced users of the
  143. Publisher generally do not use the "Tracers" option unless they are
  144. trying to solve a problem encountered in publishing a document.

  146. 4. PUBLish the Rubicon Publisher Tutorial.
  147.  
  148. NOTE: The Tutorial is about 20 pages long, and takes substantial
  149. time -- typically 30 to 45 minutes -- to PUBLish. Having PUBLished the
  150. "Samples", you will have some idea of how long it takes your computer
  151. and printer to PUBLish one page: the Tutorial will take about 15 times
  152. as long. However, once you have started the process, it will proceed
  153. automatically without further instructions, provided that your printer's
  154. paper-handling mechanism is reliable and is loaded with enough paper for
  155. the job.

  157.      (a) Make sure your printer is ready and on line and loaded with an
  158.          adequate supply of paper;
  159.      (b) log on to the directory RUBICON (if you are not already there);
  160.      (c) enter the command:

  163. 5. Use the printed Tutorial to learn how to use the Publisher.
