Installing ESF Fonts in MS Word 5.0/5.5 or MS Works
MS Word and MS Works both require matching ".DAT" and a ".PRD" printer
driver files to use and control soft fonts. The ".PRD" file tells Word what
fonts and typefaces are available, and gives the width of each character in
all proportionally spaced fonts. The ".DAT" file tells Word how to download
the soft fonts to your printer.
To use these ESF printer drivers you must first copy them to your Word or
Works subdirectory. Both files must be resident in the same subdirectory
that Word is located in to let Word automatically download soft fonts for
you. If you are using MS Works, *all* soft fonts must also be located in
this same subdirectory.
If you are using MS Word, soft fonts may be located in a separate sub-
directory from Word. We recommend that you do this. Use your Word manual
to locate the section that describes how to tell Word where your soft
fonts are located.
Installing this ESF printer driver is easy in either Word or Works. Just
follow the steps below.
Step 1
Copy the ESF printer driver (ESFLASER.PRD & ESFLASER.DAT) to your Word or
Works subdirectory. Locate the name of your *current* printer driver (this
can be done from within Word or Works).
Step 2
Using the program MERGEPRD that comes with both Word and Works, you are
going to merge the ESF printer driver and your existing printer driver.
This will *add* our font information to your existing driver. FIRST, MAKE
A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR CURRENT PRINTER DRIVER. Then run MERGEPRD as shown
below to add our info to this driver:
mergeprd yourdriver.prd esflaser.prd
Where "yourdriver.prd" is the name of your current printer driver for
your printer.
MERGEPRD will now ask "What type printer do you want to install for?"
Pick 1) HP LaserJet
You will then be asked for your printer model. Enter the number that
corresponds to your printer. MERGEPRD will then display the Main Menu.
Select:
4) Select Fonts & Font Sizes
On the new menu select:
1) Add font/size from PRDs
You will now see a list of font types. Each font type has a number before
it and lists the name of the PRD file that font came from. Enter the number
of each font family that came from your *original* driver follewed by the
<enter> key. MERGEPRD will then ask waht sizes to include. Type "all".
Repeat this process for *every* font that is listed in your original driver.
Then do the same thing for each font you purchased from ESF. (Do not in-
clude the fonts in our driver you don't own.)
Once you have marked all these fonts hit <enter> to return to the menu. At
this menu hit:
6 Return to Main Menu
Then select:
7 Create the output PRD file.
Enter a name for the new PRD file followed by the extension ".PRD". For
example, "Newdrvr.prd".
Step 3
To use a printer driver for a given document you must first select it! To
do this, first start Word or Works. Use escape to stop editing text and
select, "P" (Printer), "O" (Options), F1 (ask for listing of printer
drivers). Now move the highlighted area (using the cursor keys) to the name
you just gave the new printer driver. Hit F1 again to select the font. Then
return to editing your text file. It should now print using Elfring Soft
Fonts.
The printer drivers on this disk are named:
