BABBLE! 2.0 LAST-MINUTE NOTES AND INFORMATION
SHAREWARE VERSION
Last Updated September 1991
Korenthal Associates, Inc.
───────────────────────────────────────────────
This file contains last-minute notes and instructions on installing
and using Babble! 2.0.
We welcome all disk vendors and BBS sysops who wish to distribute
Babble!, and invite them to refer to VENDOR.DOC and SYSOP.DOC for
complete information relating to them. Individuals who wish to share
Babble! with their friends and colleagues, or to upload Babble! to
their favorite BBS's, are also welcome; please see LICENSE.DOC for
details. Sample descriptions of Babble! suitable for BBS file
listings and vendor catalogs are available in DESCRIBE.DOC. Infor-
mation on registering Babble! and other KA products can be found in
REGISTER.DOC and PRODUCTS.DOC.
─────────────
Introduction:
─────────────
Babble! is a creativity tool for writers. Babble! analyzes samples of
text for style and content, and then mixes them together to generate a
steady stream of nonsensical prose. Mix Shakespeare with Harold
Robbins, or Firesign Theatre with Dick and Jane! Add special effects
like Stutter and Subliminal! You can even import your own writings!
All text is controlled on-the-fly using Babble!'s unique "text-mixing
studio", and changes appear instantly!
By mixing up words and ideas, and by finding connections which are not
obvious on a straight reading of the text, Babble! is useful as a
creative tool and an idea generator for brainstorming. It has been
used to name products, inspire marketing and advertising materials,
and rescue authors from writer's block, and it's even valuable simply
as a toy for people who love words!
─────────────
Installation:
─────────────
Installation basically consists of copying the distribution files into
their own subdirectory on a hard disk, or onto a floppy for floppy-
based systems. If you received Babble! in compressed form (i.e. as a
single file called BAB200.ZIP), you can install and run Babble! using
the following commands. (Don't type the comments on the right!)
C>md \babble create subdirectory BABBLE
C>pkunzip bab200 \babble uncompress files into subdirectory
C>cd \babble move to subdirectory
C>babble run Babble!

Once you've installed the program, please check that none of the files
are missing. The complete list of files can be found in the text file
PACKING.LST.
If you're running Babble! on a monochrome graphics screen or a laptop,
and you're having trouble reading the screen, try running the program
with the -MONO option:
C>babble -mono
If you're *still* having trouble distinguishing bold characters from
normal ones on the slider controls, first try adjusting the brightness
and contrast knobs on your monitor. Then, if that doesn't help, try
running Babble! with the -MARK option:
C>babble -mark
For more detailed information on installing Babble!, please refer to
Chapter 2 of the manual (the text file BABBLE.DOC).
───────────────────────────
Printing the Documentation:
───────────────────────────
All documentation files, including PACKING.LST, ORDER.FRM, and all
files ending with the .DOC extension, can be printed using a special
text printing program like 4PRINT (see note below), or by simply
copying each file to PRN. For example:
C>copy babble.doc prn
Note that these documentation files contain form feeds and IBM
extended (box drawing) characters; if your printer can't handle these
high-order characters, you can still view the document on your screen
using the DOS TYPE command, Vern Buerg's venerable LIST program, or
any other ASCII file viewer.
(Note: 4PRINT is a paper-saving utility for the HP LaserJet/DeskJet by
Korenthal Associates which prints four or more pages of text on each
sheet of paper by printing on both sides in landscape mode. See
PRODUCTS.DOC for details.)
─────────────────────
Babble! is Shareware:
─────────────────────
Babble! is being marketed as shareware. Shareware gives users an
opportunity to evaluate a program before buying it. If you enjoy
Babble! and wish to continue using it after a two-week trial period,
you must order the registered version. You'll receive the full retail
