Adding ESF Soft Fonts to Your WP 5.1 Driver
Enclosed is a DeskJet font definition file for WordPerfect 5.1 and ESF
DeskJet soft fonts. Do NOT use this font definition file by itself! You
must follow the directions below to add these soft font definitions to
your standard printer driver. There are three basic steps: move fonts
from our driver to yours, activate the fonts in your driver, re-install
the modified driver. Please note that if you are using Glyphix or Power
Pak you must use step 3b below instead of 3a.
Conventions: when you see something surrounded by the "<" and ">" char-
acters, that means to hit that key on your keyboard. So <enter> stands for
the enter key, <F1> for the F1 function key, & <L> for the letter "L" key.
SPECIAL NOTE: Word Perfect only lets you install as many soft fonts as
will fit into you DeskJet RAM memory at one time. (Fonts marked with a "*")
Since most of our soft font packages offer more fonts than this we need a
simple way to install more fonts. (Otherwise to switch fonts you have to
reinstall the driver!) The easiest way around this limitation is to LIE to
Word Perfect telling the program that you have much more memory for soft
fonts than you really do. The drawback to this approach is that once done
you must download the soft fonts yourself. You can not let Word Perfect do
it with the "Printer Initialize" command. (This is what TSR Download is
for!) See the special note below in Step 4 if you want to do this.
Step 1
The INSTALL program will have copied all your new soft fonts to your ex-
isting soft font subdirectory, or it will have created a new subdirectory.
All your soft fonts from all manufacturers should be in this single sub-
directory. It is MUCH less confusing to place all soft fonts in a single
subdirectory. REMEMBER the name of this subdirectory, you will need it
later.
Step 2
From the DOS prompt, switch to subdirectory where WordPerfect 5.1 expects
to find your printer definition files. This is typically C:\WP51, however
if you are not sure you can use WordPerfect to determine what the directory
is. Start WordPerfect, and press <Shift><F1>, then <L>. Now make a note of
the drive and subdirectory. Then exit from WordPerfect back to DOS.
Move the ESFDESK.ALL file from your soft font subdirectory to the printer
definition subdirectory. Locate the name of the ALL file you currently use
for your printer. (Probably WPSM1.ALL)
Now locate the name of your current WordPerfect pinter driver PRS file.
It probably starts with the letters "HP" and is of the form HPDJ*.PRS.
To avoid problems later on, rename this file (so WordPerfect can't find
it, yet you still have it if you need it). For example. if the file was
called HPDJPLUS.PRS you can rename it by the following DOS command:
REN HPDJPLUS.PRS *.SAV<enter>
Step 3a
Assuming you do not have Glyphix or PowerPak installed, you are now going
to use the PTR.EXE program that comes with WordPerfect 5.1 to move ESF
soft font definitions from our ".ALL" file to yours. Note that if you
*only* want to move a single typeface definition from our driver to yours
you should foolow Step 3b below, instead of 3a. Type:
PTR /UPDATE ESFDESK.ALL yourall.file<enter>
Where "yourall.file" is the name of the ALL file for your printer. Remeber
to include the ".ALL" part of the filname. For example:
ptr /update esfdesk.all wpsm1.all<enter>
The program will now move the ESF font definitions into your ".ALL" file.
This may take a little time, depending on the computer you own. When PTR
is finished it will return back to the DOS prompt.
Step 3b
If you do have Glyphix or PowerPak installed, you are now going to use
the PTR.EXE program that comes with WordPerfect 5.1 to move ESF soft
font definitions from our ".ALL" file to yours in a different way than
described in Step 3a. This method is also used to move single typeface
definition to your existing driver. Type:
PTR ESFDESK.ALL<enter>
Hit <enter>, move down to Fonts and hit <enter> again. Now use the cursor
keys to highlight the font library you want to move. Now hit <4> (Copy),
and enter the name of the printer driver to copy this information to.
(say: wpsm1.all<enter> ) Repeat the highlight and copy commands until
you have copied all the font libraries you want to your printer driver.
To exit, hit <Alt><F7> and answer No to save the file and Yes to exit.
You will now be back at the DOS prompt.
Step 4
Your ".ALL" file now contains the ESF soft font definitions, but they are
not active for your particular printer. To activate the font definitions,
you need to run the PTR program again. This time we are using PTR to mod-
ify YOUR ".ALL" file. So type PTR followed by the name of your driver.
PTR WPSP1.ALL<enter>
**************************************************************************
* SPECIAL NOTE: if you want to expand the number of soft fonts that Word-*
* Perfect will let you install, now is the time to do it! Follow the in- *
* structions below to do this. If you don't want to do this skip past the*
* the text in this box. *
* *
* Move to (highlight) your printer name, "DeskJet" and hit <enter> *
* Move down to "Resources" and hit <enter> *
* Move down to "Soft Fonts (Kb)", move over right 1 column to "Total *
* Quantity" *
* Enter more RAM, say 1024 or 2048 instead of the 256 that is there *
* Hit <F7> twice to return back to main opening menu *
**************************************************************************
Now highlight your printer name, and press <enter>
Move down to (highlight) "Fonts", and press <enter>
Move down (highlight) the font families you purchased and then mark them
with the "*" key. Font families are identified by type like:
ESF Helv & Roman
ESF KeyCaps
ESF Spread Sheet
Repeat this process and mark all the font families you want to use with
a "*"
Now exit from PTR and save the modified ".ALL" file.
Hit <Alt><F7>
"Save file?" Y
"Replace File?" Y
"Exit?" Y
Step 5
Start WordPerfect and enter <Shift><F7> for the printer menu. Press <S>
for the Select Printer menu. This displays a list of printer drivers
currently installed. Now press <A> for additional printers. Use the arrow
keys to highlight your printer name "DeskJet" or what have you, then
press <S> for select. WordPerfect will now tell you the name of the new
".PRS" file it is going to create. (If you already have a file by this
name WP will ask if you want to replace it.) Now press Exit <F7>.
Step 6
You are now at the Edit screen for select printers. Press <4> to select
"Cartridges and Fonts". Use the down arrow key to move from the first
line of the next screen (Soft Fonts) to Memory line. You will probably
see a list of all soft fonts libraries (by typeface) available for the
DeskJet. If you don't see this list don't worry. WordPerfect will simply
have moved you directly into the font library. Use the down arrow key to
move the cursor to each ESF typeface you own and press the enter key. You
will now see a list of fonts that make up this typeface. Use the "*" or
the "+" key to mark each font you own. ("+" means a font will be down-
loaded for each document, "*" means you must run Printer Initialize before
printing.) Note that all Elfring Soft Font definition lines include the
letters (ESF) at the end of the font name. Also mark any other soft fonts
or cartridges you may own. Now press <F7> twice to return to the Edit
Printer screen.
Now press <7> or <D> to specify the disk drive and directory name for
your downloadable fonts. Hit <F7> and then press <6> or <I> for Initial
font. Go through the list of fonts presented here and pick a default soft
font base size. When the font is highlighted press the <S> key to Select
it. Exit from here with the <F7> key.
Note 1:
All Elfring Soft Font names include the letters (ESF). (This stands for
Elfring Soft Fonts). The font name also includes the point size of the
font. Fixed width fonts have a special naming convention so that you can
recognize them. A proportional font might be called:
Roman 12 pt. (ESF)
Broadway 24 pt. Bold (ESF)
When you want to use a fixed width font you select a font name that tells
you the point size and the pitch of the font, since you can have more than
one font with the same height but with a different pitch. So a 10 pitch
fixed width Roman font 12 points in height would be named:
Gothic 12 pt. 10 pitch (ESF)
Square 12 pt. 12 pitch (ESF)
When viewing fonts with the PTR program all fonts START with the letters
(ESF). (Who knows why?)
(ESF) Roman 12 pt.
(ESF) Broadway 24 pt. Bold
