+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Welcome to the Shareware revolution. This remarkable method of software
distribution was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim Button and Andrew Fluegelman.
It has become a major force in the software industry, helping to reduce
software prices and eliminate copy protection schemes.
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
You are encouraged to copy the PC-Type diskettes and share them freely with
others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at your own
pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace. This is not a crippled
or demo copy, but the complete working version of the program.
After you have used PC-Type for a reasonable evaluation period (not to exceed
90 days) you must either stop using it or buy a licensed copy from ButtonWare
or from an authorized dealer.
Why pay at all?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
* You receive the most CURRENT copy of the program
* You receive the printed manual (typeset and bound)
* Access to the on-line ButtonWare Bulletin Board
* Notification of updates and new products
* Inexpensive updates (typically 1/3 the retail price)
* Periodic special price offers (for our registered users only)
* Your input and ideas help shape future products
* A sense of pride and ownership, by having honestly participated
in the Shareware revolution
* The satisfaction of helping to keep software prices down, by supporting
a distribution method which doesn't depend on expensive advertising
campaigns
So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
your friends and associates. The following restrictions are designed to
protect the community of Shareware users and to prevent others from taking
unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good will of Shareware authors.
Exceptions to these conditions must be received in writing from ButtonWare.
+-----------------------------+
DISTRIBUTION RESTRICTIONS
+-----------------------------+
1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit) must follow
the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
2. You may not charge more than $3 (U.S.) per diskette.
3. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
4. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
5. The programs cannot be rented or leased to others.
6. When distributed via a telecommunications link, all ButtonWare programs
(and documentation files) must be transferred in a library or archive
format. This means that all the files on each ButtonWare disk must be
combined into one file - one file for each ButtonWare disk.
7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
you must distribute the classroom edition of the software. You can
obtain a copy of the classroom edition of the software by contacting
ButtonWare's business office at 206-454-0479. The classroom edition is
the complete program, but with an initial message indicating the program
is for classroom use.
8. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,
The British Isles, and Australasia. Please see the section below entitled:
SHAREWARE COPYING OUTSIDE OF THE USA.
9. When PC-Type is used on a network, one licensed copy of the program
must be purchased for each station that uses PC-Type.
+----------------------+
INSTALLING PC-Type
+----------------------+
PC-Type requires a hard disk or two 3-1/2" disk drives, DOS 3.0 or higher
and at least 384K available RAM.
The PC-Type files are compressed into three files on the distribution
disks. These files must be "uncompressed" before you can use PC-Type.
INSTALLING TO A HARD DRIVE
The INSTALL program is provided to uncompress these files and install
PC-Type onto your system. To install the programs, put the PC-Type program
disk into your A: disk drive and type
A:INSTALL
INSTALL creates a subdirectory on your hard disk and copies the necessary
programs and files into that subdirectory. 1450K of disk space is required
to install all files.
When installation is completed, you may want to modify some of the default
configuration settings. To do this, first start PC-Type by typing PCT and
pressing Enter at the DOS prompt. hen press F2 to bring up the main menu
and then press C to bring up the configuration menu.
Special notice should be given to the (S)witches option in this menu.
Here, you can set the action of the Enter key, the insert shape and cursor
location on entry, etc. (See your manual for configuration settings and
options.) Printer escape codes can be created or modified with the
(E)scape codes option.
When you press Esc to exit the Configuration menu, you are asked if you
want to update your .PRO file. If you answer Y, enter the path and
select the desired .PRO file and your profile file will be updated.
INSTALLING TO 3 1/2" DISKS
If you ordered PC-Type on 3 1/2" disks, you will receive two disks instead
of three. Both the program and dictionary disk files are on the 3 1/2"
Disk One. The utility files are on Disk Two.
The file INST1.BAT is on the 3 1/2" Disk One and the file INST2.BAT is
on the 3 1/2" Disk Two. These two files are only used to install
PC-Type to 3 1/2" disks.
To install PC-Type to 3 1/2" disks:
(A) Format 3 disks to 720K (or more is preferable).
(B) Label these disks as:
(1) WORKING DISK
(2) OTHER PGMS DISK
(3) MISC DISK
(C) Copy COMMAND.COM to the WORKING DISK.
(D) Place the distribution PROGRAM disk into drive A.
(E) Type A:INST1 after the DOS prompt and press Enter.
(F) Follow the instructions on swapping disks.
(Half way through the installation process you will be asked to
place the UTILITY disk into drive A, type A:INST2 after the DOS
prompt and press Enter.)
Before running PC-Type on your two 3 1/2" disk system, you should
make sure that you have an active PATH statement like:
PATH=A:\;B:\;
It is recommended that you place this statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
To run PC-Type on your two 3 1/2" disk system:
(A) Place the WORKING disk into drive A. (Note that COMMAND.COM
should be on this disk.)
(B) Move to the B drive by typing B: at the DOS prompt and
pressing Enter.
(C) Insert the disk with files to be edited into drive B.
(D) Start PC-Type by typing PCT filename as described in the
manual.
NOTE: Two 3 1/2" disk systems will not be able to use PCG2.EXE, PCGG.EXE,
or INDEX.EXE directly from inside PC-Type because of disk space
limitations. The HELP may also be unavailable. If you can format
your WORKING disk to 1.44 MEG, then you have sufficient room to
place all the files targeted to the WORKING disk AND the OTHER
PGMS disk onto the WORKING disk itself, and all the programs will
interface as described in the manual.
The only other way to circumvent the above problem is to copy the
necessary files, PCG2.EXE, PCGG.EXE, INDEX.EXE and PCT.HLP to the
diskette you will be using for file storage. However, these files
will use about 350K of storage space.
PCG2.EXE is required to link directly to the graphics program.
PCGG.EXE is required if you want to print graphs inside your text.
INDEX.EXE is required to make index and table of contents files.
PCT.HLP is required for on-line help.

PRINTING A COPY OF THE USER'S MANUAL
+----------------------------------------+
If you did not purchase PC-Type (complete with printed manual) directly
from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are evaluating the
program.
We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate PC-Type.
The program uses clear, informative menus. Help screens are always available.
Also, the file "CARD" can be printed to create a quick reference card with a
summary of the program commands.
This is sufficient for most people to evaluate the program. However, some
people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
A complete copy of the printed manual for PC-Type is available on floppy
disk to help you with your evaluation. It's almost 400 pages long so you'll
need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print it out.
The manual on disk has been mailed to most of the major computer clubs, user
groups, shareware disk dealers and bulletin board operators. You can obtain
the manual on disk from one of these groups. Just ask for PC-Type disk number
4, or the PC-Type manual on disk. To keep costs down, disk 4 is not
included with purchased copies of PC-Type and cannot be bought directly
from ButtonWare. Purchased copies include a complete printed User's Manual,
typeset and bound.
To print the PC-Type 4 documentation, follow these steps:
1. Copy the files from the PC-Type 4 documentation disk to your hard
disk using the DOS COPY command. For example, to copy the files to the
PCTYPE subdirectory on your C drive, insert the PC-Type 4 documentation
disk in drive A and type:
COPY A:*.* C:\PCTYPE
and press (Enter).
2. Change to the drive and directory you copied the files to in step 1.
3. "Unzip" the documentation files. To do this, type the following:
PKUNZIP PCT4DOC
Note: You must have 1.4 megabytes available on your hard disk to complete
these steps.
4. Type PRINTDOC when ready to begin printing. However, please note the
following warnings before printing.
WARNINGS:
1. Because the PC-Type 4 documentation includes graphics characters, we
highly recommend you print to a graphics printer. If the documentation
is printed to a non-graphics printer, many of the screen shots and menus
will not print properly.
2. The PC-Type 4.0 manual is configured for a page length of 62.
Therefore, if you are printing to a dot matrix printer with the skip-over
perforation option turned on or printing to a laser printer, you may need
to make modifications to your printer configuration before printing the
documentation. If printing on a dot matrix printer with the skip-over
perforation option turned on, you must turn this option off. Refer to
your printer manual for information on how to do this. If printing to a
laser printer, you must set your page length to a minimum of 62; 66 is
the optimum setting. Refer to your printer manual for information on how
to do this.
If you do not follow the suggestions listed in Step 2, blank pages may be
printed after each page.

NOTES AND UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES
+---------------------------------+
(1) The ALLDOS command saves the contents of memory to disk and frees that
space in memory to run DOS or other applications from DOS. The file
which is saved is fairly large. If you have an environment variable
TEMP=pathspec, the file is saved to that pathspec. If this pathspec is
a RAM drive, the process of dropping to DOS in this mode is considerably
faster. If this environment variable does not exist, the file will
be written to your default directory if sufficient room exists.
You can set the TEMP variable as:
C>set temp=x:\dirpath
where C> is the DOS prompt,
x is the desired drive, and
dirpath is the desired path on that drive.
Note that x:\dirpath must be a valid path.
