  311.      6-1 Why the NEAT Filer was developed and how it works.

  313.      Generally applications have RUDIMENTARY FILE and DIRECTORY management
  314.      capabilities at most....correct?  This necessitates leaving (shelling
  315.      out, terminating the foreground application, etc.) to do these tasks.
  316.      Correct again?
  317.  
  318.      No More!  NOW from WITHIN your EXISTING APPLICATION whether GRAPHICS or
  319.      TEXT MODE based, FILE and DIRECTORY MANAGEMENT functions formerly only
  320.      available from NON-RESIDENT file managers or DOS shells......
  321.  
  322.      Many times while in an application program, the user or the program
  323.      will need a file name or other input to the command line.  In the case
  324.      of CAD, Database Managers, Spreadsheets, etc. with files in many
  325.      different drives and/or paths, the problem of remembering, let alone
  326.      finding that particular file,  becomes logistically improbable.  This
  327.      scenario can be expanded to many other applications also, e.g.  word
  328.      processing, editors, etc.  Being able to invoke the NEAT Filer from
  329.      within an application program frees the user from having to leave the
  330.      present application and search for the required file from within DOS or
  331.      by another separate file manager.

  333.      The NEAT Filer is a TSR (Terminate & Stay Resident) DIRECTORY & FILE
  334.      MANAGER.  This means the NEAT Filer remains resident in background
  335.      memory while an application program may run in the foreground.
  336.  
  337.      To invoke or bring NEAT Filer to the foreground within an existing
  338.      application, merely press a certain combination of 'HOT' (ALT LEFT-
  339.      SHIFT) Keys.  This action suspends the foreground application, and
  340.      activates the NEAT Filer.  When finished utilizing the NEAT Filer's
  341.      Directory & File handling capabilities, the user merely returns it to
  342.      the background and resumes working with the foreground application.

  344.      In addition to all the powerful file management functions available,
  345.      NEAT Filer provides a way to output the selected file name to the
  346.      command prompt of the current application program.  This is
  347.      accomplished by searching via the file management functions and
  348.      selecting the drive, path & file-name in NEAT Filer.  When the user has
  349.      selected a file, they merely press the SEND to Key Buffer function and
  350.      NEAT Filer removes itself from the foreground, outputs the complete
  351.      drive, path & file name sans extension to the applications command
  352.      prompt.  The user may then execute or edit the output.
  353.  
  354.      NEAT Filer provides a complete user friendly interface to file
  355.      management functions such as changing drives, paths, file
  356.      specifications, copying, deleting, moving, sorting and searching.
  357.  
  358.      Merely pop up NEAT Filer WITHIN your application with a simple
  359.      combination of hot keys.  The ability to invoke the NEAT Filer at ANY
  360.      time frees you from having to leave the present application and copy,
  361.      move, delete, etc. from within DOS or another separate file manager.

  372.      7-1 SHAREWARE REGISTRATION
  373.  
  374.      The NEAT Filer is a "Shareware" software package and is provided at no
  375.      charge to the user for evaluation.  This means that we provide you with
  376.      a fully functioning sample of the program for you to "try out" for a
  377.      short time.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide
  378.      computer users with high quality software without high prices, while
  379.      providing an incentive for programmers to develop new products.
  380.  
  381.      By now almost everyone knows the idea behind Shareware, and I suspect
  382.      that most of us are guilty of using one or more of these excellent
  383.      programs and not giving the author his due.  If you find yourself using
  384.      the NEAT Filer on a regular basis, please pay the amount requested
  385.      (only $49) on the enclosed registration form.  You will be registered
  386.      for a period of one (1) year from the registration date, and entitled
  387.      to automatically receive FREE any major revisions of NEAT Filer that
  388.      may be released during the registration period.

  390.      Extended use without proper registration is a violation of our rights
  391.      under the Copyright Laws of the United States.  You can tell if this
  392.      program is Registered (or not) by looking at the top of the Main
  393.      Window.  User Support (both Telephone & Written) is intended primarily
  394.      for our "Registered  Users".  But we will never "turn our backs" on
  395.      anyone who needs help or information with any of our products.

  555.      10-1 NEAT Filer Basics
  556.  
  557.      When NEAT Filer is first activated, your screen is replaced by a large
  558.      rectangle (we call it the Main Window) which contains several smaller
  559.      rectangular areas (windows).  These rectangular window areas have a
  560.      definite purpose in organizing the screen into discrete areas and the
  561.      types of information displayed.  Each rectangular window area of the
  562.      Main Window is labeled with its identifying name.
  563.  
  564.      SOURCE PATH Window.. This window is located at the top of the screen.
  565.      Displayed in the path window is the current drive and path.  Also The
  566.      NEAT Filer copyright notice and version number are displayed there.
  567.  
  568.      SOURCE DIRECTORY Window.. On the right, a visual representation of the
  569.      directory structure (TREE) on the currently logged source drive will be
  570.      displayed here.  On entry, the current path will be highlighted on the
  571.      directory tree.  At the bottom of this window are the currently active
  572.      keys associated with this window.  You may use these keys to traverse
  573.      the SOURCE Directory tree structure.  At any time you may press ESC to
  574.      EXIT to DOS or your applications command prompt.

  576.      STATUS Window.. On the left is the disk and file statistics window.  In
  577.      this window is displayed basic disk and file information ie., free
  578.      bytes on the currently logged disk, number of total files, etc:
  579.      essentially bottom line data on the status of the currently logged disk
  580.      drive.

  582.      HELP Window..This window is not visible at all times, but remains in
  583.      the background waiting for the user to press the F1 or H key.  This
  584.      action POPS-UP the HELP window.  Subsequently pressing F1 or H while
  585.      the HELP window is visible sends it to the background again.  The Help
  586.      window is context sensitive insofar as the SOURCE DIRECTORY and FILE
  587.      WINDOW are concerned.  This window is movable by pressing "M" and using
  588.      the cursor control keys to move it around.

  590.      FILE Window..Pressing <enter> while in the SOURCE DIRECTORY window
  591.      brings this window to the foreground with a listing of files.  The
  592.      files listed depend on which directory was highlighted in the source
  593.      directory window when <enter> was pressed.  At the bottom of this
  594.      window are the currently active keys associated with this window.  You
  595.      may use these keys to traverse the file window listing.  Pressing ESC
  596.      here will take you back to the main window.

  598.      CURRENT COMMANDS..At the bottom of the main window is the current
  599.      command menu.  This command menu will change depending on whether the
  600.      SOURCE Directory or the FILES window is currently active.  DIRECTORY or
  601.      FILE commands will be displayed respectively.

  616.      11-1 QUICK START
  617.  
  618.      This section describes several preliminary procedures, some of which
  619.      are required and some of which are highly recommended before you begin.
  620.      If you are unfamiliar with any of the MS-DOS procedures mentioned,
  621.      consult your MS-DOS User's Guide for instructions.
  622.  
  623.      To use the NEAT Filer, you will need the following equipment:
  624.           - IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2, 386, 486, or 100% COMPATIBLE clone
  625.           - 640 KB RAM Memory
  626.           - Monochrome or Color Monitor
  627.           - DOS 2.0 or Higher
  628.           - A Hard Disk
  629.           - A 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" Floppy Disk Drive
  630.           - The NEAT Filer program executable
  631.  
  632.      The NEAT Filer is delivered on one standard diskette.  The distribution
  633.      diskette contains three files.  One file is the NF.EXE executable program
  634.      file.  The other is NF_DOC.TXT which is the file containing your
  635.      documentation.
  636.  
  637.      Before you can use NEAT Filer on your system, you must first install it
  638.      on your hard disk.  The directory on your hard disk in which you will
  639.      place the NEAT Filer is entirely up to you.  It is advisable to place
  640.      the executable (NF.EXE) in a public directory.  That would be a
  641.      directory listed in the path statement in your autoexec.bat.
  642.  
  643.      For this example, we will assume you wish to copy NEAT Filer to the "c"
  644.      drive "root" directory of your hard disk (c:\>).  Insert the disk
  645.      containing the NEAT Filer executable (NF.EXE) and documentation file
  646.      (NF_DOC.TXT) into disk drive "a:".  You must be in DOS and logged to
  647.      your hard drive "c:\>".  Terminate any applications you may be running
  648.      at present.
  649.  
  650.      At the DOS command prompt (c:\>) type - "copy a:nf*.*" then press
  651.      <enter>.  The file NF.EXE and NF_DOC.TXT will be copied to the "root"
  652.      directory of "c:" drive.

  689.      an application.  We advise you to load NEAT Filer before any

  691.      resident kernel.  Caution: if you have loaded other TSR's before NEAT
  692.      Filer there must be a minimum of approximately 262KB of application
  693.      memory available after these other TSR's.  Although we use only 6KB of
  694.      RAM for residency, we need the other 256KB available to swap.  If there
  695.      is not enough memory available for the NEAT Filer to pop-up, then an
  696.      error message will be displayed.

  698.      If your are intending to use software that communicates with com ports
  699.      (background plot spoolers, modem/fax telecommunications programs,
  700.      etc.), you MAY experience problems.  NEAT Filer has been tested with
  701.      some background plot spoolers.  What may happen in the case of plot
  702.      spoolers, etc. is a cessation of output to these devices while NEAT
  703.      Filer is active (in the foreground).  At worst, a tele-communications
  704.      program will drop the connection from lack of line activity.

  707.      12-2 SWAPPING APPLICATION MEMORY

  709.      NEAT Filer automatically detects whether another application has been
  710.      loaded after it.  If so, the NEAT Filer will display a window advising
  711.      that the application is being swapped out.  Where it gets swapped to
  712.      depends on whether EMM is available.  If not available, swapping will
  713.      be to DISK otherwise to EMM which will be faster.

  715.      In the event that application memory swapping is to disk, you will
  716.      probably find some NEAT Filer SWAP FILES here and there on the disk.
  717.      Don't delete these files!  Normally NEAT Filer will delete its swap
  718.      files.  But if a reboot should occur for some reason, these files will
  719.      be left behind.  The file names will be NF_SWAP2.TMP, NFCHGEN.TMP or
  720.      similar.  The only SAFE time to delete these files is if NEAT Filer is
  721.      NOT RESIDENT in memory.

  984.      To change a file's attributes you must have selected a directory to
  985.      list.  In the FILE Window will be a listing of the files in the
  986.      particular directory you have chosen.  Each file's name, extension,
  987.      size in bytes, date created, time created and finally the file's
  988.      attributes will be displayed.  The attributes will be in the following
  989.      order: Hidden, System, Read-Only and Archive.  If the particular
  990.      attribute is NOT set then a dot replaces the letter of the attribute.
  991.  
  992.      To change ONE file's attributes, position the highlight bar
  993.      on the file you wish to change.  Press "A" and a pop-up window will
  994.      appear displaying the current file and its information.  Below the file
  995.      in this window you will see a highlight bar which is movable using the
  996.      left and right cursor keys.  This can be used to select the attribute
  997.      to be changed.

  999.      Also pressing the first letter of the attribute (H, S, R or A) will
  1000.      move the highlight bar to the appropriate attribute.  Pressing the up
  1001.      or down arrow cursor control keys on the selected attribute toggles the

  1003.      file's attributes per your selection.  Press ESC at anytime to EXIT and
  1004.      NOT change the files attributes.

  1013.      HIDDEN - This attribute renders a file invisible to normal DOS
  1014.      directory listings.  Operating System files are usually hidden
  1015.      (MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, etc.).  If you wish to hide a file this is the
  1016.      attribute for you.

  1018.      SYSTEM - Files with this attribute set are usually connected with DOS
  1019.      in some way, again, (MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, etc).  It is advisable not to

  1023.      READ-ONLY - If a file is set as read-only, the only thing you may do

  1302.      Sorting by name lists files alphabetically. Sorting by extension groups
  1303.      files alphabetically by extension and by name within each extension.

  1305.      by time.  The newest files are at the bottom of the list.  Sort by size
  1306.      lists files in order by size in bytes.  The biggest files at the bottom
  1307.      of the list again.

  1312.      When you wish to perform operations on a group of files you must tag
  1313.      the files.  To tag a file, highlight the file to be tagged and press

  1315.      file name indicating the file is tagged.  To tag several files in a row
  1316.      rapidly press the "T" or "+".  The highlight bar will automatically
  1317.      move to the next file and tag it.

  1320.      arrow will disappear.  To untag several files in a row rapidly press
  1321.      the "U" or "-".  The highlight bar will automatically move to the next

  1324.      Tagging ALL the displayed files is simple, merely press the "insert"
  1325.      key and all files will be tagged.  Untagging ALL files is accomplished
