INTRODUCTION
INST-MAN is a utility program that will install/upgrade/remove ■■■■-MAN
shareware programs on a hard disk from packed distribution files, display
their README files and print their manual documentation, print order
forms for any of the ■■■■-MAN programs, or process the serial number
for programs that have been registered.
There are no prior requirements for printing an order form.
To process a registration serial number, the desired ■■■■-MAN program
must already be installed on your hard disk, in the subdirectories defined
in you PATH statement.
FOR PROPER OPERATION, ALL REQUIRED ■■■■-MAN
FILES *MUST* BE PLACED ON PATH REFERENCED SUB-
DIRECTORIES!
Major Features
■ Ease of installation procedures.
■ Standardized installation of ■■■■-MAN programs.
■ Systems may be easily removed from the hard disk after testing.
■ Allows multiple systems to be processed from a single distribution dis-
kettes.
■ Can be run from either a floppy diskette or from copied or down-
loaded files on the hard disk.
■ Menus follow the IBM SAA/CUA (System Application Architec-
ture/Common User Access) guidelines.
■ Automatic color display on systems so equipped.
■ Context sensitive help available for all actions.System Requirements
INST-MAN will run on an IBM PC, XT, AT or true compatibles and has
been tested with PC-DOS or MS-DOS operating systems, version 3.0
through version 5.0. Since this program installs system files on a hard disk
from a distribution diskette, a hard disk is required. Also, since the distribu-
tion files may be downloaded via communications and placed on the hard
disk, a floppy disk drive is optional. The program will determine what type
of display monitor is available and adjust itself accordingly. To print the op-
tional documentation, a printer is required.
Manual Format
This manual is divided into several introductory chapters followed by a
chapter for each INST-MAN menu function. The format of these chapters
and the information presented therein has been standardized using the fol-
lowing conventions.
Page layout - Each page has a header detailing the chapter and the pro-
gram version covered. A footer displays the manual page number.
Brackets and parentheses - Brackets, [...], are used in the manual and in the
help screens to specify what should be entered in response to the current
prompt. If a character string is to be entered, the type of character is not-
ed, such as ALPHA, NUMERIC, ANY, etc. Parentheses, (..), are used for
comments.
Computer key conventions - Keys specified in the manual text that are not
in entry brackets are shown as reversed, such as ■ESCAPE■. All key referenc-
es are in capital letters for clarity.
Action steps - Some procedures may require selection from a menu of op-
tions, inputting data or following a sequence of steps. Most manual sections
will first give an overview of the function or task under discussion and then
detail the various action operating procedures. In order to make this manu-
al easier to use a symbol, ■ , marks the beginning of each of these action
operating procedures.
■■■■-MAN programs - The general group of shareware programs by Mic-
rometric is referred to by the name ■■■■-MAN. It may also be used in
reference to a specific program in that group.
Shareware distributed documentation manual - The documentation file in-
cluded on the shareware distribution diskette contains the same information
as the printed and bound manual supplied as part of registration with three
exceptions, the result of the word processor, formatting and printer used.
The first is that the page headers and footers are NOT present in the
shareware version (If LASR-MAN is used to print the documentation, use
of its page header option will supply the page numbers). The second is that
all of the control display characters (ASCII 1-31) and the reverse print
keyboard codes are NOT shown properly. Finally, bolding, underlining and
special symbols are NOT present.
Shareware
■■■■-MAN and their installation program, INST-MAN, are being distribut-
ed as SHAREWARE. The SHAREWARE concept allows users to examine
a program on a trial basis at no (or minimal) charge before purchasing it.
In addition, by decreasing marketing costs, professional quality software may
be distributed for a fraction of the cost of a comparable commercial prod-
uct. Regardless of whether you register the program, please help distribute
the ■■■■-MAN programs by sharing unmodified copies of it and its files
with others. If you find a ■■■■INST-MAN program of value, you must
register your program use. This will provide you with:
■ A 7" x 8 1/2" printed and bound manual.
■ ■■■■-MAN phone or mail support for one year.
■ Notification of the next ■■■■-MAN release.
■ Ability to suppress the ■■■■-MAN shareware message randomly
displayed.
■ Sincere thanks for your support of the SHAREWARE concept.
Program Registration. . . . . . . . . . . . . $15-30.
(There is no registration required for the INST-MAN or
HELP-MAN systems. See the ORDER function of INST-
MAN for each system's price.)
Latest Version Diskette. . . . . . . . . . . . $5-10.
Package (All the above). . . . . . . . . . . . $20-35.

For ease in program registration, the INST-MAN program may be used to
generate an order form. See the chapter "ORDER function" for specific
details.
This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principal
works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem
with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able
to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem
with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Musk-
egon, MI 49442-9427, or send a Compuserve message via easyplex to ASP
Ombudsman 70007,3536.
HELP-MAN OPERATION
When either INST-MAN or some of the other ■■■■-MAN programs are
executed, a resident help manager is first loaded. This terminate and stay
resident (TSR) help manager program displays help pages when the help
manager hot key, ■F1■, is pressed. These help pages, which are in addition
to the help line of data at the bottom of the screen, are designed to answer
questions about the operation of the programs currently being used. To
return to the program that was running before the help manager was called,
press ■ESCAPE■.
During execution of either INST-MAN or some of the other ■■■■-MAN
programs, pressing the help manager hot key, ■F1■, displays a help pages
window such as shown below. The help page shown is the first one available
as shown by the page number 0 in the upper right corner. Page 0 acts as
a help page menu for this program. The help page actually displayed when
the hot key is pressed depends on the actions of the current program and
will be the most appropriate for the program at that point.
The help display will pop down after approximately one minute with no
keyboard activity. This is so that there is no conflict with some screen blan-
kers that clear the display after a set period of no keyboard activity.

RUNNING INST-MAN
The steps necessary to run INST-MAN are detailed below.
1. INST-MAN is a utility programs used to order, install and register
■■■■-MAN shareware programs. In order to operate properly, it re-
quires the presence of the following files:
INSTALL.EXE
INST-MAN.ZIP
PKUNZIP.EXE
There is an optional file, whose name is in the form ■■■■-MAN.ZIP,
for each of the ■■■■-MAN systems.
These files may be supplied on a distribution diskette or they may be
downloaded from a bulletin board. In order to operate properly, these
files must be located:
■ On a diskette, to be read from a floppy diskette drive. This
diskette should be placed in the desired drive. Or,
■ On a subdirectory on the hard disk. The name of this subdi-
rectory does not need to be included in the PATH state-
ment.
2. Once the files are properly located, at the DOS prompt change to the
drive and subdirectory on which the ■■■■-MAN distribution files are
located.
3. The syntax to execute the INST-MAN utility program is:
INSTALL
There are no command line parameters.
4. At the DOS prompt, type ■I■ ■N■ ■S■ ■T■ ■A■ ■L■ ■L■ and press ■ENTER■.
5. INSTALL.EXE is a loader program that determines the type of moni-
tor and selects a temporary directory for installation use. It then loads
the installation program INST-MAN. The program header display is
shown below.

or a work-around found, you may either register the ■■■■-MAN pro-
grams and NOT use VOPT on the drive(s) that they reside or not
register and run VOPT.The registration process used by INST-MAN does not appear to con-
flict with other disk de-fragment/compress programs such as those from
Norton's and PC Tools's.
EXIT FUNCTION
The EXIT function has no options and, when selected, exits the INST-MAN
program. After a shareware message, shown below, is displayed, any
requested documentation is unpacked and processed.

APPENDIX A
REGISTRATION SUSPENSION
The method of registration used by the ■■■■-MAN programs has been
reported to conflict with one disk de-fragment/compress program, VOPT
from Golden Bow. VOPT reports an ATR problem and then says to run
CHKDSK - CHKDSK does not report any problem.
The registration process used by INST-MAN does not appear to conflict
with other disk de-fragment/compress programs such as those from Norton's
and PC Tools's.
This problem may be corrected by using a registration suspens-
ion/restore/display function available in INST-MAN.
■ To correct the problem of a utility unable to handle a ■■■■-MAN
registered program:
1. First, using the distribution diskette, run the INSTALL program
and install the INST-MAN system as you would any of the other
■■■■-MAN system.
NOTE: INST-MAN may ONLY be installed if one or more of
the other ■■■■-MAN programs has been registered.
Before attempting to tag INST-MAN for installation
make sure that at least one of the programs has been
registered (a solid happy face under the "I"install column
heading is used to signify registration).
This registration suspension/restore/display function is of
use only by registered users and has therefore not been
documented in the unregistered version. 2. The syntax for using INST-MAN for registration suspens-
ion/restore/display is:
INST-MAN SystemName[option]
where:
SystemName - the system name whose registration is to be
suspended/restored/displayed.
option - the valid single character options are:
blank or none Toggle the current registration status.
If the system is currently registered, the registra-
tion will be suspended.
If the system is currently registered but suspend-
ed, the registration will be restored.
If the system is not registered, no changes will
occur.
- If the system is currently registered, the registra-
tion will be suspended; otherwise, no
change will occur.
+ If the system is currently registered but suspend-
ed, the registration will be restored; oth-
erwise, no change will occur.
? Display the current registration status of this
system. Message that may be displayed,
based on SystemName's registration status,
include:
SystemName Registered
SystemName Registration suspended
SystemName Not installed
There MUST be a space between the program name and
SystemName. There MUST NOT be a space between System-
Name and the option.3.Run INST-MAN with the proper syntax from either the DOS
command line or from within a batch file.
EXAMPLES:
■ To suspend the registration of LASR-MAN while VOPT
is run and then restore the registration, displaying the
status when it changes, use the following code in a batch
file:
...
INST-MAN LASR-MAN-
INST-MAN LASR-MAN?
...
VOPT
...
INST-MAN LASR-MAN+
INST-MAN LASR-MAN?
...
The console display for this code segment should be
(assuming that echo is off) -
...
LASR-MAN Registration Suspended
...
LASR-MAN Registered
■ To display the registration status of the ENVI-MAN
program:
At the DOS prompt, entering
INST-MAN ENVI-MAN?
will display -
ENVI-MAN Unregistered
