To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands....
Sun Tzu,
The Art of War
There is a story that has been around for a long time. It
evolves around a problem J. P. Morgen had:for try as he might,
at the end of each day there were things that he just never got
around to doing. One day he was discussing this problem with a
friend, telling him that he would pay any price for a solution.
His friend then told him to try this. First take a piece of paper
and list everything he needed to do that day. Then do the things
on the list one by one starting with the first entry and not to
move on to the next until that job was done. He also said that if
at the end of the day there was anything left, copy it to the
next days paper then add any other entries to the end of the list
and continue as before. His friend then told him that after a
month send him what he thought it was worth to him. So a month
later his friend found in his mail box a letter from Mr. Morgen
and all that was inside was a check for $10,000.
Daily Reminder (c) built on this idea (at 1/1000 what it cost
J. P. Morgen) will help you also. By using 'DR.EXE' you will have
a constant reminder of what you need to do that day. At the end
of each day run DR to list what needs to be done for the next
day, even some of the things you didn't have time to finish that
day. DR was designed with minimal commands and functions so that
a user will be up and running from the word go.
Starting up DR
--------------
There are two ways to run this program:
1 - every bootup of your system
2 - by just typing 'dr' at the DOS prompt.
To make it run from bootup:
---------------------------
1.) Put a copy of DR.exe into the root directory of your boot
disk or hard drive.
2.) Add the entry DR.exe into your autoexec.bat file on a blank
line. If you don't have an autoexec.bat file create one in
the root directory of your boot disk/hard drive. (see
your DOS manual for more information on .bat/autoexec.bat
files). Your system will start with DR every time you
bootup (turn on your system).
For more experienced users:
If DR is in a directory that is on your DOS path and
you are not in the same directory as DR it will start
but you will not see its data. To fix this use the
DOS append command (see your DOS manual).
To make DR run when you want it to:
-----------------------------------
1.) Just type DR at the DOS prompt
Running DR at any time:
-----------------------
To add a new entry:
After pressing the INSERT key a small input screen will
appear (if it does not then you have used up all 20 cells
and must delete an entry to continue). Type your entry at
this point. You also have full use of editing keys at
this time (ie. left and right arrow, backspace and
delete, insert and overwrite, ect.). When done press
ENTER/RETURN to save entry or ESCAPE to discard entry.
When adding new entries DR will include the date you added
the entry (DR uses the DOS date thus if it is not set
correctly then the entry date will be incorrect).
To edit an existing entry:
Use the up/down arrow keys to hilight the entry you want
to edit then press the ENTER/RETURN key. After pressing
the ENTER/RETURN key a small input screen will appear
containing the entry you want to edit. At this point, you
also have full use of editing keys (ie. left and right
arrow, backspace and delete, insert and overwrite, ect.)
to change the text of your entry. When done press
ENTER/RETURN to save the edited entry or ESCAPE to
discard edited entry.
To delete an entry:
Use the up/down arrow keys to hilight the entry you want
to delete then press the DELETE key.
To get help:
Pressing the F1 key a help screen will appear on
the screen.
To end session:
There are 2 ways to exit DR. To save all edits and exit
press the ESCAPE key. To exit without saving edits press
the CONTROL and 'C' keys together.
To print list:
Press the PRINT SCREEN key. The small box at the end of
each entry is provided for your convenience, to check off
things as they are done.
The value of this program:
For best results, after installing it and running it all
day, make sure you also run it from the DOS prompt before
the day is done-so you can start on the next days list.
