                     Introduction to LQ v 2.34

               from Granny's Old-Fashioned Software

To get started using LQ first make a backup copy of this disk,
then print the LQ manual.  (If you are a registered user you
already have a printed copy.)  The files

  LQ.DOC (the manual)
  LQPCWRIT.DOC (using LQ with PC-Write)
  LETHEAD.DOC (how to use the letterhead editor)
  WORDPER5.DOC (using LQ with WordPerfect 5.0)
  EPFX80LQ.PRS (printer driver for WordPerfect 5.0)
  PRINTMAN.COM (executable for printing *.DOC)
  READ.ME2 (instructions for using PRINTMAN)

have been 'archived' into the single file DOC.ARC.  Use the DOC
command to unarchive these files:  follow DOC with a drive letter,
or a drive letter plus a directory name.  For example, to make a
working diskette in drive B, insert a blank, formatted diskette in
drive B and enter the command:
  DOC B:
To make a working directory named LQDOC on drive C, enter the
commands:
  MKDIR C:\LQDOC
  DOC C:\LQDOC\
The target disk or subdirectory will contain the documentation
files and the PRINTMAN program for viewing or printing them.

The LQ files you will need on a work disk are:
  LQ.COM
  *.SET    (all character sets)
If you want to edit your own character sets you will want to copy
the file
  EDCHAR.COM
You can move LQ.COM and all character sets to the formatted disk
(e.g.) in drive B by typing
  A> WORKDISK B:

With version 2.3 a new printed manual is available.  Registered
users with earlier versions can obtain a copy for $3 ($5 foreign).
Here are the main changes from the previous version (2.26):

Two additional fonts have been added: SCRIPT and GOTHIC.  We
recommend using SCRIPT in the elite mode so that adjacent letters
will be connected.

LQ can now output to a file which can be printed with the DOS
PRINT utility.  This lets you obtain LQ printouts without
sacrificing much RAM (but you will need lots of disk space).  You
will need to modify PRINT.COM with the PRINTBIN program to allow
you to print binary (picture) files.

Triple-high printing (turned on with <Esc> <Esc> 'L' or with a
command line option) now stays on until cancelled with <Esc> <Esc>
'M'.

When the border symbols from the IBM graphics set are printed they
are now connected.  In previous versions the elite mode was
required to avoid gaps in borders.  (You will still need to change
the line spacing to avoid gaps in vertical spacing.)

The screen activity in the file mode has been improved.  Now only
the number of lines printed is shown.  (No pesky control sequences
appear on the screen.)

LQ now recognizes the extended keyboard and should not conflict
with software that exploits new features.

Updates to manual:

In version 2.34 an option has been added to suppress print
spooling for use with programs which obtain keyboard input in a
nonstandard way (notably XyWrite).  The syntax is
  LQ X
This will disable both the buffer and the pop-up window.  XyWrite
users: see note below.

Thanks to some editing by LQ user James Constantinides, the GREEK
character set has changed somewhat from that displayed in the
printed manual.  To obtain a printout of the new set type the
lines
  LQ C2'GREEK'
  DUMPSET 2 GREEK
The same procedure can be used to obtain a printout of any other
font (substituting the font name for the word GREEK), or the
PRINSETS command can be used to obtain a printout of all fonts.  A
few additional fonts are available on request - HEBREW, GREEK2 (a
monotono Greek font, also from Mr. Constantinides) and a couple of
novelty fonts.  Any extra fonts we have will be provided for the
cost of shipping a disk - say $3.


To use PC-Write with LQ, install PC-Write for an Epson MX Type 3
(graftrax +).  If you want to get really fancy (proportional
spacing and microjustification in various fonts) read the file
LQPCWRIT.DOC for details.  Type LQDEMO for sample printout of
microjustified text.

Some printers are 'fuzzier' than others - their control of small
increments is not as great.  If the characters produced by LQ are
too jagged try switching to a thicker font such as MAIN.SET.

When using SCRIPT.SET, set LQ to elite printing so that the
characters will connect.

Note: this version of LQ is for standard narrow (8.5") printers.
If you have a wide printer and wish to use LQ with 14" paper,
contact Granny's to obtain an alternate version of LQ.

SideKick users: SideKick uses two default key combinations to
bring up its menu: <Ctrl>+<Alt>, and <Left Shift>+<Right Shift>.
The second of these is the same as the default key combination for
LQ.  There are two ways to resolve this conflict:
 (1) Run SKINST to change SideKick's second key combination, or
 (2) Run LQINST to change LQ's key combination.

MultiMate users: Regardless of which printer you are using, use
the IBMGRAPH.PAT file when using LQ.  You will need to use the
MultiMate UTIL program to delete the 'printer initialization
codes' in this file.

WordPerfect users: from user Clair Dunn comes the following
procedure for fixing bold face with LQ:
Copy your WPRINTER.FIL file to the WordPerfect disk with
PRINTER.EXE on it, then run PRINTER.
Choose 'CREATE A PRINTER'; when asked for a name, enter (e.g.) LQ.
When asked for base definition choose Epson MX.
Now choose 3, EDIT a printer and select your new printer (LQ).
Choose #5 to fix the bolding commands:
  Select 9 and type <27>E
  Select A and type <27>F
Press return until you are back at the main menu, then exit.
Copy WPRINTER.FIL to your normal word processing disk or
directory.
From within WordPerfect use Printer Control section of PRINT menu
to install your new 'printer'.  To use it when LQ is resident,
choose #3 (change printer temporarily) from the print menu; select
1 from the menu and type in the number (probably 2) of your new
printer.

Fairly detailed instructions for using LQ with WordPerfect 5.0 are
given in the file WORDPER5.DOC.  (You will need to run the DOC
batch file described above to extract this file from DOC.ARC.)
Many thanks to user Rev. Jeffrey McPike for his efforts in writing
this documentation.

Also for WordPerfect:  You can insert control codes in your
document by using angle brackets.  For example, to switch to font
3 you can insert <27><27><51>, which will send <Esc> <Esc> '3' to
LQ.  The way in which control sequences are inserted varies in
different versions of WordPerfect.  In 4.2 press <Ctrl F8> to
bring up the printer format menu, then choose option A to 'Insert
Printer Command'.  In 5.0 press <Shift F8>, then '4' (for Other),
then '6' (for Printer Functions), then '2' (for Printer Command),
then '1' (for Command).

WordStar 4 users: you can insert the <Esc> character by pressing
<Ctrl P> first.  For example, the sequence to turn on emphasized
printing is <Esc> 'E', so you would press
 <Ctrl P> <Esc> E
(a total of 3 keystrokes).  You will see
 ^[E
on your screen.  If you want to underline the last word in 'This
is a test' you will see
  This is a ^[Etest^[F
(<Esc> 'F' turns off emphasized print.)

All WordStar users:
Run WINSTALL and first select the standard printer Epson MX 80 with
Graftrax.  Then choose Custom Installation of Printers (in
WordStar 4 you will have to run WSCHANGE) and select the submenu
User-defined Functions.  Press 'C' to change the #1 user function
and enter
 ,1b
 .
to ensure that <Ctrl P>Q will generate an <Esc> character (ASCII code 1B
hex). Leave all other options as their defaults and save the changes.
Now when you run WS you can enter <Esc> by pressing <Ctrl P>Q.  For
example, you can turn on triple-high printing by enter <Esc><Esc>L with the
following sequence:
  <Ctrl P>Q<Ctrl P>QL

Another way to insert control codes in WordStar is to use a dot X
command.  For example,
.XQ 0E
.XW 14
set up the <Ctrl P>Q and <Ctrl>W user printer functions to insert
the ASCII codes 0E hex (14 decimal) and 14 hex (20 decimal)
respectively.  These codes turn double wide printing on and off.
You can also use .XE and .XR in a similar way.


To use Microsoft Word with LQ, follow this sequence:

  Before you run LQ or Word run the short program LQWORD included
  on the LQ disk.  (Just enter LQWORD at the DOS prompt.)
  Next load LQ, then finally run Word.

You can exit and reenter Word as often as you want and remove LQ
from memory (the LQ R option) without having to run LQWORD again.
No other software should be affected.  (You may want to include
LQWORD in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to simplify installation.)
One minor limitation of using LQ with Word: when Word (or any
other program) is in graphics mode you can't use LQ's pop-up
window directly.  If you do need to access the window, you can
select Library, then Run, then <Enter>.  At this point the shift
keys will bring up LQ's window, while any other key press will
take you back to Word.  Most of the features controlled by the
window can also be managed by sending the proper control sequences
directly from Word, so you won't have to go through this sequence
very often.

When using Word you should install the GRAFTRAX printer driver.
Copy GRAFTRAX.PRD to your Word directory and go to Print Options
to choose a new driver.  (Before version 4 use the arrow keys;
with Word 4.0 use F1.)  GRAFTRAX.PRD came with versions of Word
before 4.0 but is no longer included; Word 4.0 users should call
Microsoft Customer Support and ask for the Additional Supported
Printers Disk.

If underlining gives you trouble with MS Word, the following
procedure will fix the problem.  Run the MAKEPRD program from the
MS Word package to convert your PRD file to a text file.  Edit the
line starting BYTE:144, changing MOD=1 to MOD=3.  Then run MAKEPRD
again and convert the text file you just edited to a PRD file.

To use LQ with MS Works, follow the directions for MS Word.  To
insert control codes, use search and replace.  For example, to
insert the <Esc> character type an arbitrary character you don't
normally use, say '~'.  Then search for this character and replace
it with ^27.

A user reports that <Alt P> should be pressed 5 times to print
from MS Works.  Menus should change to show progress towards
printing.


To use LQ with PFS Professional Write:
Select Professional Write's "Unlisted Printer" option under
"Setup" and assign the following values:
Boldface on       : 27 69
Boldface off      : 27 70
Underline on      : 27 45 255
Underline off     : 27 45 0
Italics on        : 27 52
Italics off       : 27 53
Superscript on    : 27 83 0
Superscript off   : 27 84

You can insert control codes in PFS Write by bracketing them with
*p *.  For example, the codes for triple-high printing are <Esc>
<Esc> 'L', so you could enter
  *p 27,27,76*
27 is the ASCII code for <Esc> and 76 is the code for 'L'.


To use LQ with Xywrite load the program by typing
  LQ X
(which disables spooling and the pop-up window).  You can get by
using the 3EPSONFX.PRN print driver, but it is recommended that
you obtain the customized driver LQ.PRN from Granny's.  Registered
users may obtain this disk without charge; others please send $3
(or better still, register).

into your printer).  Addresses can be 'grabbed' from the screen or
taken from a file.

    You can obtain the current Ample Notice disk from Granny's
Old-Fashioned Software for $10 or a registered package for $30.
