  88.    GETTING STARTED
  89.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  90.    The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  91.    your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  92.    the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  93.    program.

  95.    The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
  96.  
  97.             ASEASY.EXE    ASEASY.MSG    ASEASY.MNU          
  98.  
  99.    These three files need to reside in the same sub-directory.  In 
  100.    addition to that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, ASEASY.CFG, 
  101.    HTREE.EXE, and any Addins, are going to be used, they HAVE to reside 
  102.    in the same (ASEASY) directory as well.

  105.     AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:
  106.

  110.     Where Option can be one or more of the following:

  113.     /P       - Use alternate menu file (ASEASY.MN2) which provides
  114.                 command compatibility with version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.

  116.     /ATT2    - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $40
  117.     /AUTO=File... - Specify the worksheet to be loaded     
  118.                      when the program is started           
  119.     /BK=x    - Set screen blank-out period to x seconds   
  120.     /BM      - Bypass Mono Detection Scheme
  121.     /CFG=xxx - Specify the configuration file to use 
  122.     /CTR     - Center column identifying letters

  138.     /V1      - Force CGA Emulation (normally on VGA Monitor)

  141.      A> ASEASY /H2/DIR=C:\Data [ENTER]
  142.      Starts AS-EASY-AS for a Hercules type monitor, using the second 
  143.      page for graphics, and instructs the program that the data files 
  144.      will be located on drive C, in subdirectory "Data".

  171.    The following files are included on a distribution disk obtained 
  172.    directly from TRIUS, Inc.    If the AS-EASY-AS diskette you got  did 
  173.    not contain all of the files described below, please let us know.

  175.    will change, with regards to the sample worksheet files and other 
  176.    utility programs may be added.

  189.    To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  190.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  191.    Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we 
  192.    recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a 
  193.    high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file, 
  194.    the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available 
  195.    to the user without swapping disks.  If installing on 360k disks, you 
  196.    need a minimum of 2 - 360 drives, e.g., A and B. 
  197.  
  198.   * Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  199.  
  200.   * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  201.     press ENTER if it is not).
  202.   
  203.   * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  204.     instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s) 
  205.     and/or subdirectory.
  206.  
  207.      If you are experiencing difficulties with the installation program
  208.      you can try to manually install the program from DOS.  To do so, 
  209.      for example, place the   original disk in drive A, log onto the 
  210.      drive and/or directory that you want to install the program, type     
  211.  
  212.        A:LHA e A:ASEASY5.FLS         and press ENTER.  
  213.        
  214.      NOTE: If you are trying to extract the files on 360K diskettes, 
  215.            you will need more than one diskette!

  218.    On-Disk Documentation
  219.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  220.    The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a 
  221.    ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  222.  
  223.    Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is 
  224.    indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  225.  
  226.    (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  227.         paper in it (the manual is about 102 pages).
  228.  
  229.    (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  230.  
  231.               COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  232.  
  233.         Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  234.         then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  235.         COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  236.         printer is connected to).

  239.  
  240.    New Features and Main modifications in Ver 5.01
  241.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  242.    A number of new features have been incorporated in Version 5.01 of AS-
  243.    EASY-AS.  A brief description of these features is provided below: 
  244.  
  245.   <A> The EMS/VM module of the program was completely overhauled.  With 
  246.       version 5.00, users many times run out of conventional memory, and 
  247.       could not enter any more data, even though they had megabytes of 
  248.       EMS, or VM available.  A new, proprietary technique, developed by 
  249.       TRIUS, continuously performs an intelligent allocation of the 
  250.       Conventional/Expanded memory pool.  The end result is the capability 
  251.       to load worksheets up to 10 times larger that with version 5.00 
  252.       (provided the user has enough EMS). 
  253.  
  254.       In addition to that, the maximum amount of VM (virtual disk memory) 
  255.       that may now be used by AS-EASY-AS was increased from about 400k to 
  256.       800k.  Although users might think that even more virtual memory 
  257.       should be accessible, complex applications, using more VM, would 
  258.       result in inordinate amounts of disk thrashing.  Based on 
  259.       benchmarks and internal testing, about 800k of VM is reasonable. 
  260.  
  261.       An increase in speed was achieved in version 5.01, by going from 2k 
  262.       EMS/VM pages to 4k pages.  In particular users with VM applications 
  263.       should welcome this speed increase. 
  264.  
  265.   <B> Two new prefixes were added to the program, ASCII characters 174 
  266.       («) and 175 (»).  Label (string) entries preceded with one of these 
  267.       characters will result in the string being padded to the left («) 
  268.       or to the right (») with dots, filling the column width.  For 
  269.       example, for a column width of 10, the entry 
  270.  
  271.              «Total     would result in    .....Total
  272.  
  273.       while the label entry   »Total   would result in    Total.....
  274.       
  275.       These two prefix options, just like all others, are also available 
  276.       options under the /Range, Prefix command. 
  277.  
  278.  
  279.   <C> A Godsend to network administrations!  A new command line switch, 
  280.       /CFG=Path\Filename  now permits the user to specify which confi-
  281.       guration file for AS-EASY-AS should be loaded. 
  282.  
  283.       Now, each user, on a network, can have his/her own configuration 
  284.       files with meaningful names and in their own directories.  For 
  285.       example, 
  286.  
  287.                ASEASY /cfg=F:\MYFILES\JAMESQ.CFG
  288.  
  289.       would start the program and get the default configuration from a 
  290.       file called JAMESQ.CFG, in a subdirectory \MYFILES on drive F:., 
  291.       while                                                            
  292.  
  293.                ASEASY /cfg=E:\GENERAL\HENRY_M.CFG
  294.        
  295.       would start the program and get the default configuration from a 
  296.       file called HENRY_M.CFG, in a subdirectory \GENERAL on drive E:., 
  297.       while 
  298.       
  299.       If the specified file is not found, the program will use the built-
  300.       in default configuration parameters. 
  301.  
  302.  <D>  New variables are now calculated and displayed when performing a 
  303.       linear regression analysis.  The new variables are the X and Y 
  304.       standard deviation, the Regression Error, the Slope Error, and the 
  305.       count of samples used in the regression (so the user does not have 
  306.       to use the @COUNT function). 
  307.  
  308.  <E>  The Data sorting routine was modified so that it now includes an 
  309.       additional two sort key selections;  Third and Fourth.  These two 
  310.       additional sort keys should be enough to cover the sorting needs  
  311.       of even the most demanding user.  In addition to that, the maximum 
  312.       sort range was expanded to 8192 rows.
  313.  
  314.  <F>  A new command was introduced; Range, Copy, Formula.  This command 
  315.       will copy cell containing formulas, while maintaining the original 
  316.       formula references (/CopyCell translates the formula references).

  327.  <G>  A new parameter was introduced in the /Sheet, Text, Find/Replace 
  328.       command.  In addition to the PU options, a new option, R, if 
  329.       specified, will now prompt the user to specify the range upon which 
  330.       the Find/Replace command is to operate.  If the R option is not 
  331.       specified, the command works as before, i.e., it operates from the 
  332.       current cursor location to the end of the file. 
  333.  
  334.  <H>  A new option is now available under the User, Install menu, the 
  335.       CMdStr command.  When this command is selected, the user is 
  336.       prompted to enter the default startup command line switches desired 
  337.       (remember to save the configuration file).  Then, when the program 
  338.       is started NEXT TIME, it would work as if all the specified 
  339.       switches were placed at the command line.  For example, setting the 
  340.       CMdStr parameter to: 
  341.  
  342.              /VM /E /RA
  343.  
  344.       would, next time, start the program using virtual disk memory, with 
  345.       EGA graphics enabled and the Round Absolute option ON (see earlier 
  346.       section for command line switches). 
  347.  
  348.       Note that if ANY command line switches are specified when starting 
  349.       the program from DOS, the CMdStr specified parameters are ignored.  
  350.       Furthermore, the new  /CFG  command line switch is not supported, 
  351.       i.e., it is ignored if placed in the  CMdStr parameter string. 
  352.  
  353.  <I>  The @LINK function was modified to utilize the path specified using 
  354.       the /DIR= command line switch (or the /File, Dir command), as the 
  355.       default - if no path is explicitly specified as part of the @LINK 
  356.       entry.  In earlier versions the current directory was assumed if the 
  357.       path was not specified. 
  358.  
  359.  <J>  A new menu option "None" was introduced under the "/PrintTo, 
  360.       Printer, Options, Pitch" menu.  This allows the user to disable the 
  361.       pitch control codes, normally sent to the printer, when using 
  362.       generic print drivers. 
  363.  
  364.  <K>  A modification was made to the /Data, Bin command so that it 
  365.       now correctly handles both positive and negative values.
  366.  
  367.  <L>  A new dimension of capabilities was given to the @USER defined 
  368.       functions.  In earlier versions, these functions could only return a 
  369.       value.  In this new implementation, user defined functions are 
  370.       capable of returning a string result as well. 
  371.  
  372.  <M>  A modification was made to correctly save and read the mode 
  373.       specified by the user (/User, Install, Video, X-User) from the 
  374.       ASEASY.CFG file. 
  375.  
  376.  <N>  A new video mode was implemented (CGA 40x25) for users experiencing 
  377.       trouble reading fine print.  This feature is something that many 
  378.       visually impaired users would welcome. 
  379.  
  380.  <O>  Given the two new sort keys and the expanded sort range, a rotating 
  381.       status indicator appears in the upper left hand corner of the 
  382.       display during prolonged sort operation.

  386.  <a>  A new function was introduced, @MEMAVAIL which returns the 
  387.       number of bytes of memory available at the time of call, 
  388.       as follows:
  389.                  @MEMAVAIL(0)  -  TOTAL memory available
  390.                  @MEMAVAIL(1)  -  CONVENTIONAL memory available
  391.                  @MEMAVAIL(2)  -  EMS/VM memory available.
  392.  
  393.  <b>  A modification was made to permit saving the user installed color 
  394.       options in the ASEASY.CFG file.
  395.  
  396.  <c>  PICKLIST macro was modified to handle entries up to 21 characters.
  397.  
  398.  <d>  The THIRD and FOURTH sorting keys are now stored with the file.
  399.                 
  400.  <e>  A new command line switch (/BM) was introduced for systems using 
  401.       EGA/VGA monochrome monitors but were reporting Herc, NON-Graphic 
  402.       monitors to AS-EASY-AS.
  403.  
  404.  <f>  A significant modification to the EMS/VM model will permit a 
  405.       larger number of formulas (linked cells) in a worksheet.  The 
  406.       modifications resulted in a more robust model that will 
  407.       correctly intercept any memory allocation errors, out-of-memory 
  408.       conditions, etc.
  409.  
  410.  <g>  A specific modification was also made to the VM (virtual memory) 
  411.       model to flag allocated pages as READ-ONLY which results in a 
  412.       significant increase in speed when moving around the worksheet, 
  413.       printing, etc.
  414.  
  415.  <h>  File loading speed was significantly increased (15-50% depending on 
  416.       the contents of the worksheet, the storage medium, CPU type, etc.
  417.  
  418.  <i>  A modification was made to Print, View to correctly display 
  419.       condensed print and wider than 80 column pages.
